See page 5 of the thread.

The 2nd quote sounds like a smoke screen.

I agree. If Burress isn't wearing an orange jumpsuit this fall, there is no way the Jets don't at least open up a dialogue and try to get him. Ryan has already stated that he likes Clowney but that he's been a little inconsistent. Also, in his phone message yesterday, he touts the defense up one side and down the other, yet mentions NOTHING about the offense in that message, a clear sign that he's not 100% happy with what he's working with on that side of the ball right now.

After seeing the Brandon Marshall video in the NFL section I hope they pursue him over Plax!

The video is awesome. One on one coverage doesn't work with this guy.... even a couple of defenders have difficulties. I can just imagine what this guy would mean to Cotchery and Keller's game. Sanchez to Marshall would be insane.

Sounds like Burress has a "hard-on" for wanting to play in Florida....he already tried to sell himself to the Phins' earlier in May...but they weren't interested....now he wants to play for the Bucs.

Doesn't look like he wants to play in NY.

Good read. Maybe it's best that he leave NY altogether. Plax and Antonio Bryant as your WR's, yikes. This rookie head coach's patience will be tested early and often if this happens.

I don't know why you'd interpret the fact that Burress contacted friends and former teammates on a team in Florida as an indication he doesn't want to play in New York. The guy is unemployed; I'm sure he's contacting lots of friends and former teammates. But since this is from a Tampa Bay newspaper, it's focusing on the ones who play for the Bucs.

Until we hear word one from Burress that there's ANY team he doesn't want to play for, there's no reason to think such a team exists. Beggars can't be choosers. Odds are he'll sign with the team that's most interested in him and/or offers the most money.

The biggest problem of all right now is, there's no 100% certainty that Burress will be able to complete a season for anyone, and that makes it a huge risk for any team to sign this guy at the present time. I don't blame the Jets for cooling on him. Why would Tannenbaum want to pass on a player who he knows he has for a 16 game season to sign Burress who could be suspended after, say, Game 4? Now you'd be stuck without the WR you desperately went after... makes no sense, contract or not.

Signing Burress right now is a huge gamble and a stupid thing to do unless you know for sure he can play for you for the entire season (and hopefully into theplayoffs). Apparently Rosenhaus is blowing this little fact off, but that doesn't necessarily make it okay. Tannenbaum is wise to keep an arm's length on Burress at this time and pursue other avenues. If the smoke clears on Burress and we haven't acquired someone else, well then, that's a diffrent story:

New York Jets seem to have cooled on ex-Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress
    by Dave Hutchinson/The Star-Ledger

    William Perlman/The Star-Ledger
Plaxico Burress may be able to play the 2009-10 NFL season without facing suspension, but it seems the Jets are not interested in the signing the former Giants wide receiver right now.

Burress' gun possession case adjourned until Sept. 23

Burress' agent says he wants to find client a job by training camp

Although the agent for wide receiver Plaxico Burress said he hopes to land his client a job before the start of NFL training camps this summer, the Jets' interest in Burress has cooled, according to two people kept abreast of the discussions between the Jets and Burress' representatives.

Burress' felony gun possession case was formally adjourned Monday in Manhattan criminal court until Sept. 23, and agent Drew Rosenhaus said he believes Burress can play an uninterrupted 2009 season before the case goes to trial.

The week before the NFL Draft, the Jets contacted Rosenhaus to inquire about Burress' legal status, but that's the only conversation the two sides have had.

The Bears and Bucs have also reportedly expressed interest in Burress.

Though the Jets apparently no longer have eyes for Burress, they'll likely keep their options open regarding the acquisition of a veteran wide receiver. After all, it's only June. The Jets have been seeking a play-making wide receiver to replace Laveranues Coles.

"Consistent with our philosophy, we will continue to do our due diligence with any and all free agents that are available now and in the future," the Jets said in a statement Monday afternoon.

The Jets' interest in Burress has dissipated in the wake of their three-day veterans minicamp last week in which quarterback-turned-wide receiver Brad Smith and special teams ace Wallace Wright were impressive enough to ease the organization's concerns.

Smith's performance was especially encouraging. Wide receivers coach Henry Ellard thinks the former Missouri star has a bright future at the position after being a jack-of-all-trades in his first three seasons.

Although wide receiver David Clowney was a mild disappointment during the camp, the club remains intrigued with his speed.

The Jets believe that Smith, Wright and Clowney, coupled with steady veteran Jerricho Cotchery and underrated slot guy Chansi Stuckey, can get the job done by committee.

Furthermore, the club regards tight end Dustin Keller as a big wide receiver who can stretch the field and take advantage of mismatches with linebackers.

Coach Rex Ryan has repeatedly said he feels the Jets can win with their current corps of wide receivers. His formula for success is his defense, offensive line and running game.

Meanwhile, Rosenhaus seems confident he can get Burress a job and said Monday through his Twitter account that the league has no "grounds" to take disciplinary action against the wide receiver at the moment because his case is still pending and the Giants already disciplined him when they suspended him for five games last season.

However, Greg Aiello, the NFL's senior vice president of public relations, said Monday that Burress isn't necessarily in the clear to play in 2009.

Burress faces the possibility of being suspended by commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy.

"We reserve the right to make a decision at the appropriate time," Aiello told The Star-Ledger. "A decision hasn't been made yet."

Thus, any team that signs Burress takes the risk of him not being available for the entire season. It's a huge risk for a team, a risk the Jets have opted not to take.

Then why put all that effort in getting Sanchez?

I'm with you and your previous posts. We still have an unanswered, gaping hole at WR. I disagree with Ryan if he thinks his above "formula" is adequate. To be a complete team, we also need a good passing game. That completes the threat and keeps defenses off balance.

Unless Goodell comes out and resolves the unkowns about Burress (will he be available for an entire season, including playoff games?), then we have to pursue other WRs. I'm not real confident building a passing attack around Brad Smith, David Clowney and Chansi Stuckey with Cotchery the only truly experienced wideout amongst them.

Agreed. Even a run first offense needs the balance of a threat in the passing game. Nobody's OL is good enough to do without that. And yes, the word out of camp has not increased my confidence level on the current crop.

WTF...why is Woody commenting on football stuff to the public? He is an owner, he needs to act like it. Leave the football to the football people he hired and stfu about football related stuff to the press. While he has ever right to be informed and even involved behind the scene, the more he speaks the less clarity and benefit he adds.

Now that that is said - regardless of how dumb he is for carrying a gun, as a 1 year rental if he can miss no more than 2 games due to suspension, I still wouldn't mind bringing him him. If he can improve this team and has a reason to be on his best behavior given his past stupidity - I don't see the issue

I think he would help the WR core and would probably be on his bestest behavior for a short time, but what happens when/if his legal issues get cleared up? Does he 'get it' or does he revert back to his previous ways?

I think Plax would fill a need that we have at WR, but with his past issues and probable impending NFL suspension I can't see him coming to the Jets this year. I think we'll stay put and see what shakes out after cut's are made during/after TC's . Three teams that I would keep an eye on , as they have an abundance of Wr's are ( Niners, Eagles, Saints).

Meh. Given all that's happened and all the negative comments from his teammates I would pass on him.

    And he's going to jail.

Ultimately I think it's gonna come down to the Jets and Bears for Plax
