Are you saying we are getting Jaguars former head coach to replace Brick next year? That tank job was brilliant, remember how he sat Gander Minshew?

The Jets are at another crossroads

With the loss tonight (probably) the elevator is in free fall

I was tipsy at getting AR and I am just tipping my hat to the other posters who knew what the crystal ball was really saying

Woody is not selling ..but the new GM better be light years better than that fool Douglas. The owner better kill this decision or the NFL should help the lamebrain

Detroit and Minny revived themselves why can’t we do it too?

Well I was very wrong on this whole Rodgers thing. I thought for sure we’d be better…how could we NOT be? Zach was terrible. I didn’t expect Rodgers to be the Rodgers of old but surely he was going to be an upgrade over Zach. If we won 7 games with Zach, how could we NOT win at least 10 games with Rodgers?

But it just goes to show that football really is the ultimate team sport…and coaching matters more in football than any other major sport as coaches design game plans and call every play on both sides of the ball. Very different than basketball or hockey which are way more freeform and baseball which is more individualistic. And we were and continue to be severely lacking in coaching.

The bigger problem is that these aren’t obscure things that are hard to identify. Is there ANYONE who thought Hackett was going to be a great OC? How long and how loudly have we all been calling out our OL coach…shit, anyone could watch our OL over the past few years and see they suck under Kevin Carter. This isn’t rocket science.

But man oh man I did not expect us to implode this badly.

So we are at a weird spot. Do we blow it all up and start from scratch AGAIN? I think overall the roster is better now than it was when JD started, but he’s had too many bad draft picks now and too many bad free agent moves that I wouldn’t be upset to see him go. The coaching staff for sure has to go. And then what about Rodgers…does he want to come back? Retire?

This will be a wild offseason, but I think a lot of it will hinge on what Rodgers does. If he retires, then that’s more of a clean slate to just fire everybody from JD to the entire staff and get a new GM to decide who to keep and who to trade on this roster. Despite the record, I do think we have plenty of good young players…we don’t need to fire sale this and get rid of everyone…that will just delay the process. The key will be deciding who to trade for picks and who to keep. But we do have 5th year options on Sauce, GW, and JJ, and Q and Quincy are under contract. We don’t have an option on Breece Hall but we do have Allen in the wings.

I think with the right HC, this shouldn’t be a long turnaround…there is talent here but gotta get the right HC to use it correctly

I'm torn. I don't know if Rodgers is a shell of his former self or if it's just the lack of chemistry and coaching. There's just so much else wrong with the team, it's hard to say. Like @Jets79 said I just can't believe that we are worse with Rodgers, a better oline and an easier schedule, than Zach Wilson.

Here's what I think needs to happen.

    1. Get Jordan Davis some live game reps. I don't care how it happens, just do it.
    2. Trade Hassan Reddick and extend Jermaine Johnson. Extension for JJ will be cheaper but only if we do it this year instead of waiting and overpaying
    3. Extend Sauce. Lockdown corner is big.
    4. Trade Garrett Wilson for a draft haul. I know this may be a bit controversial, but he's got talent, he's just not there mentally. This is his 3rd year and he's still unable to get on the same page as the QB and you see it quite often. Draft his replacement with one of the picks acquired. He's not that guy and I can't see him ever making a pro bowl.
    5. Trade Breece Hall for a haul. He's not the future. He's got talent but his position isn't valuable and easily replaceable via day 2/3 draft picks.
    6. Fire Hackett and the oline coach.
    7. Hire an offensive minded head coach and get a DC that can actually fix the penalty problem and hold players accountable.
    8. Cancel Woody?

You acknowledge that the rb position isn’t valuable, who’s giving up a haul for Breece?

The only thing Rodgers can do at this point to help the Jets is fire Hackett. All the leaves are brown and Rogers is California Dreaming already.

I like a lot of this….personally I am not yet on the trade GW and Hall page. Those are two cornerstone young guys on offense…I just can’t stand weakening our offense, which has been the issue for YEARS. I get the comments but I believe that if we were to get a REAL HC here those two guys would ball. Don’t you think GW would be amazing on a team like KC, or Phil, or Pitt, or Det, or Mia? I do. The issue is not talent, the issue is utilization and coaching, which includes motivation.

I just hate, after 6 years of this shit show, to just throw everything away again and go back to scratch.

I just don’t think that’s where we are. I’m more on the view that coaching is our single biggest issue. We keep bringing in rookie defensive coaches who have no clue how to build an offense. Can’t do that anymore.

I’d rather see what a creative offensive guy could do with this talent. But then, I’d have fired Hackett (no…correction…I’d have NEVER hired him in the first place) and Carter before the season, and I can’t understand why those two losers are still here given the performance their units have put on the field.

But enough with the fucking defensive guys. We’ve been doing it for decades and we have one of the worst offenses in the league to show for it. How can Woody not see that? I get he’s an idiot, but this is basic fucking stuff

I get what you are saying but if you give Rodgers Zach's kicker from last year (not the washed up version of him), and last year's defense (JFM, JJ, Huff, Jefferson, Woods for half a season), I am convinced we are at least 5-3 right now, maybe 6-2. Heck, the kicker difference alone took a couple of games away.

Rodgers with improved OL IS a big upgrade over Zach. But it was largely negated in the aforementioned downgrades. JD improved OL and QB, but fucked DL and Kicker. As a result we are losing closer games, but still losing. Coaching was and is shit, but that is a constant from last year.

    **OPTION 1**
The Jets conclude the remaining season that likely still has a few more highs and lows baked in. We then go into an offseason with a surrounding concession that MVP Rodgers is clearly a thing of the past, but with the acknowledgement that he is still the best QB this team has had in long time. Enter the spin-for-next-season sales pitch effort focusing in on the fact that he played a lot of the year banged up, and behind a line that didn't really do a good job of putting him better positions to succeed. With much being made of the surrounding support claim that with an additional year removed from the achilles injury, a better reworked line, better team culture, a full year year of Davante, and a few extra made FG along the way the 2024 team should/would be expected to win more of the games it was losing this year. With the entire offseason slate of decisions basically feeding into that narrative. From the "improved energy" HC choice to a probably repeat OL pick in the 1st round of the draft.

The Jets still get to enter 2025 as one of the more relevantly talked about teams. They still get the prime time game consideration nods. And you can bet the farm that a majority of the same fans/media that swallowed the equally shallow "Superbowl contenders!" koolaid start drinking up the idea that there is supposedly too much talent on this team not to have a legit chance at at least making the playoffs.

    **OPTION 2**
With no current reason to believe Rodgers would retire (or try to force himself elsewhere when he's already gotten so much of what he wants in place here) the team itself decides to pull the plug. With Woody ultimately deciding that he's going to simply swallow that $49m left on Rodgers contract, and even if it basically means seeing him (and the massive amount of attention he generates) play elsewhere in 2025 on our dime. We then go into the offseason with a more forward thinking plan that essentially concedes to 2025 being a complete throw away season. With the entire offseason slate of decisions basically feeding into a narrative that we'll suck in 2024, but hey this time we are gonna build things right from the ground up, and you just wait to see what this team ends up looking like down the road.

The Jets enter the season going back to being back page news nobody cares or talks about. With AR gone those prime time game consideration nods go bye bye. And you can bet the farm a non-irrelevant amount of that koolaid drinking interest the past 2 seasons checks out because it's simply a lot less fun and engaging when you are staring down an expectation of being a constant loser going in.

    _________________________________________________________

In all we've seen out of Woody Johnson and how this team likes to operate over the years....I'm equally astonished you are leaning into thinking he's even smart or that forward thinking enough to steer this franchise into option 2 over option 1.

On that note - Damn it. I think I might of just talked myself into believing it really might foolishly be Rex and his "improved energy" as the next HC choice.

Thank you! I was really looking for a laid out explanation. In regards to option 1, you fail to mention OC. Are you expecting Rodgers to learn a new playbook and terminology or are you saying we will be mandating Hackett and co again on a new HC?

If our kicker makes FGs we are a playoff team right now. If Rodgers wants to come back I would let him.

I know its not comparable and ill probably get laughed for even bringing it up but the Broncos fired John Fox 3 years into the Peyton Manning experiment. It looked like Peytons Bronco run was a flop as they exited at home in a loss to Indy. Most did not want Peyton back at that point and were ready to move on. They hired Gary Kubiak, the team played better and more clean and they then went on to win the Super Bowl. Of course the Broncos had already gone to a Super Bowl with FOX but did not win it. Its more of a point that coaching matters, but the Jets attempted to do this with the worst coaching staff in the NFL. Saleh had no right to coach this team. Of course it looks like a mess because the coaching staff is not even competent or has any understanding. There are people on this forum that could coach better than they could.

    A 2nd and a 5th is probably a haul in RB terms.

I have no disagreement, but I keep asking and not seeing any real response- do we tell Aaron Rodgers he’s learning a new offense with a new OC, or are we telling whatever new HC we hire that he’s stuck with Hackett and co?

I believe the answer to that will end up being that we keep Hackett, but we then actually follow through on the whole "finding him a helper and team play caller" thing we didn't actually follow through on last winter. Who will then replace Downing because you need at least some form of surface change there.

Like last year that will also probably be enough for most people as long as whoever the HC we bring in really brings it with the whole "new and different energy" thing (which I'd also expect to hear out of Rodgers mouth 1000x over). Again, this is why I'm now also really thinking it might end up being Rex. Since he probably does a better job of helping to talk that and our chances in 2025 up then anybody else we could bring in.

I hear ya. You definitely aren't wrong. The talent on the offense SHOULD have some success and maybe COULD with better coaching. This team makes me think in rebuilding terms, which sucks because they were considered a Super Bowl contender.

I really don't want to trade everyone away and start over, but the Jets will mostly likely be starting over at coach and QB in 25. Keeping Wilson is probably best, but Breece is walking when his contract is up, guaranteed. If Jets can't get it right, Garret's probably gone too. He's going to want to go somewhere that has an offense. During Woody's tenure, our offense is ranked on average last in the league. Something's gotta change!

I saw that the Texans are desperate for a WR. I say milk em for everything they're worth.

The only theoretical way I could see that is if Pete Carroll was the coach. And I have a very hard time seeing that. What coach did you have in mind? I can’t see an offensive guy like Kingsbury or Johnson, which bums me out honestly. I can’t see Vrabel, Belicheck has carried on with how poorly this team is run from the top down. Flores? Do you think we keep Douglas?

Like I said if I was guessing the next HC now I'm starting to buy more into it being Rex Ryan. Say what you want about Rex but until the wheels are actually falling off around him the guy is great BS salesman, and a rebooted version of this season in 2025 will be all about selling what likely amounts to a lot of BS.

I have no idea what they do on Douglas. Since 's it's so hard to really speculate that without knowing how much of what he's spent the last 2 years doing is basically on marching orders from Woody and/or catering to what AR wanted. Like I don't think JD gets fired if he's just been good soldiering to the 2 people that, outside whatever gets said on script, I don't believe for a second are blaming themselves behind the scenes.

The Manning to Denver comp is what has been my hope / expectation from day 1...... But unfortunately the defense is now in shambles too.

If rb is unimportant I sincerely doubt anyone offers a 2nd
