If both qbs are gone, sholkd we entertain an offer from CLE to trade up to 6 for A. Cooper? They have 12 and 19, could we get 2 quality players at least for that pick? Worth it?
While I get that Mariota is seen as having the tools, I also understand he has not been running the kind of offense the Jets will likely run. I don't think we should have to count on that happening by Opening Day.
If we go by the draft value chart, I believe the 12th and 19th picks are worth more than the 6th pick.
The deal isn't for him to start Opening Day. Nobody is doing that. Not Winston. Not Mariota. Not Cook or Hackenberg next year or Jones the next year. There are no first day starting QBs but starting and succeeding Opening Day 1 2016 through 2026 is what matters. _
Matt Moore would provide more reassurance? I think the only thing we should be counting on or wishing for next year is our young players getting better as the season goes along. Anything more than that would be gravy. Also the whole reason why Chan Gailey was brought in was because of his ability to mold an offense around his QB and personnel. Don't know why a Matt Moore would be a better option than Mariota or Geno given that fact.
I don't believe in putting limits on players before they even step foot on a NFL practice field. Let Mariota's play in camp dictate whether he sits, not the offense he ran in Oregon.
Moore is better than Smith. Pretty much everyone is. Even in rebuilding I believe in playing the most competitive team you can. Playing Smith is not doing that, no matter what else is going on.
Winston can easily start from day 1. Mariota is the less-pro ready QB out of all of those guys. Jones he only played 3 games, he's not even in consideration yet IMO until he plays a full collegiate season and teams have tape on him.
I thought no one disliked Smith as much as I did but I guess I was wrong. You have me beat in the Smith critic department.
Whether he CAN start from day 1 is irrelevant. I really don't want any rookie QB playing day 1. Opening Day 2015 is the least important factor in my choice of draftable QBs. _
It was a four way trade. The first time Cleveland got Sam Bradford, pick 10 overall, and the Eagles 2016 first round pick in exchange for both first rounders this year. The second time I had Cleveland throw in their third round pick too.
This is where you are wrong, it goes to show how much farther Winston is in terms of being a good NFL QB compared to Mariota. Hypothetically the Jets draft Mariota, we obviously don't trout him out - but what happens if the starting QB gets injured and Mariota isn't ready? If I'm a coach of the NYJs, I'm like fuck I don't want to put this guy out there when he's not ready. You are obviously ruining the young QB. On the Bucs with Vincent Jackson, Mike Evans and that 2nd yr TE? I think he's capable of having a decent game day 1. Obviously depends on the opponent.
My opinion is wrong?!? On how I want to develop a rookie QB, EVERY rookie QB? Your opinion means NOTHING to in terms of whether Winston is ACTUALLY farther along than Mariota in being a good NFL QB. Btw, I want a FA quarterback AND Geno AND Simms on the roster so my Rookie QB isn't forced to play in case of injury. _
So far will Mariota have to come to become a starting QB? 16 games? 32? Winston could start wk1 and be decent. So you want 4 QBs on this roster? How's Mariota going to get the reps he needs if he's 4th on the depth chart?
It's not a matter of liking or disliking Smith. The numbers overall from last season show him to be one of the very few vying for title of worst NFL Qb. For the second yera in a row. But the real point in relation to this whole speculation about Mariota is I think if Smith is the starter, it is quite simply unrealistic to think Mariota will be kept on the bench until he's ready. New HC, new GC, the NY media market - Smith starts, the Jets are 2-4 by game six, you know what will happen. Mariota starts whether he's ready or not. I don't want that scenario. Get a vet Qb in there who will at least give the team a fighting chance on offense. No more Smith.
And he could start week one and throw 4 picks. We just don't know what his adaptation to the NFL is going to be like and he's very young and somewhat unlikely to be approaching this from a humble, got to pay my dues, point of view. If the Jets are keeping Matt Simms and Geno Smith they better have 4 QB's on the depth chart if they draft one of the 1st rounders to play QB. Because neither Geno nor Simms are likely to stay on the field with hot #1 sitting on the bench.
Ftr and I said it last week I think a big part of the scenario we are talking about is that Tampa takes Winston, and he will not fall to 6.
