You are correct, but he's only a $507k cap hit it the team decides to cut bait and move on.

The true cap gonna be what it be. You think they gonna waste a roster spot on Geno because it cost 1/2 million? Roster spot on someone useful worth a lot more that 500k in cap space.

i have no idea what they are going to do, but if we are going to discuss it we should use all the facts at our disposal,no?
based on what we know about our cap situation going forward, i don't think it would be a shocking development if geno is on the 2016 roster com july

Should we feel lucky or burdened? He's a boat anchor.

The scenarios that would lead to keeping Geno shock me more.

I actually think we trade Geno at this point. And yes I think somebody would give something up for him. Find me a team with a questionable backup situation, Smith may look like an enticing reclamation project to a team with clear franchise QB.

If it could happen to Gabbert, it could happen to Geno (who's way better than what the former was)

Ideally next year we look to start Petty. Fitz should once again be kept on the roster as the 2nd or 3rd QB though. At the very least, he is a veteran who has played the game and can at least be solid for a period of time.

Absolutely, we have a year to go on Glass Geno's contract and Petty needs another year on the bench. I don't see us wasting a pick on a QB unless Macc falls in love. My bet is the first five picks are OL, LB and punter.

This is what I would do to our QBs in the offseason.

    1) Lock up Fitz for another 2 years, 0 guaranteed money after year 1. This gives us time for him to start next year and possibly mentor Petty or another future QB in year 2.

    2) Cut Geno, whether you like him or not, I think its best for him and the team to part ways. Give Petty a chance to be the backup.

    2) Draft another QB. We cant rest on our laurels and assume Petty is going to be our future franchise QB. I would love it for us to grab one in the 1st round, but if no one falls to us then take one later. Make that QB compete in camp with Petty and Fitz.

Can we close the thread with this post? We found the correct answer.

We'd be stupid to move into free agency and the draft with only Petty on the roster. We'd be even stupider to move forward as if Geno was going to catch on as the start. Draft a quarterback, keep Petty, and barring a big offseason move (i.e. getting Brees, Rivers, Kaep, Stafford, etc.) Fitzpatrick will be a Jet.

As far as I'm concerned we should draft a quarterback every single year until we find one that looks excellent in camp (not in the first round, but at least throw a 7th rounder to one every year). The name of the game is finding a big time quarterback to win the Super Bowl. Lets play the game.

I'm for drafting a QB every year when the class is good but this year's class is utter crap. We can't afford to waste a pick on what is essentially a project. We already have one of those in Petty.

    Yes.

Petty has a year under his belt - he would be very wise to use that time frame to study, watch and learn. That one-year window is the very luxury recent Jets QB picks just didn't have. So - it's time for him to earn his keep. If he's a backup material at best, then he will be a backup after next year.

But for next year, Jets will have to test what he's got. Fitzpatrick will be his backup.

I'd love to bring him back on a 1 year deal. If there's a huge bidding war and he's asking a lot of guaranteed money on more than a 2 year deal I'd consider letting him walk. The question then becomes who starts next year. I'd be happy if we spent our 1st on a QB like Goff, Cook or Lynch. I'd be fine with either of those 3 and Geno next season.

You think a year is enough? I've read a few articles on his progress, he didn't exactly sound "empowered" with the play book in his hands.

As a few people have already mentioned, there are a few ifs, such as his surgery. I think the biggest question mark is you need to answer toward what end are you bringing him back?

Do you bring him back as the presumed starter? No, I don't think so. But do you bring him back to allow him to compete for the job? Okay, I can see that.

Do you resign him to groom Petty and/or another prospect? Yes! He is a very smart QB who has gotten a pretty good career from fairly modest physical gifts (especially when compared to some of the most gifted QBs around the league) and that's precisely the sort of person you want grooming a young guy.

What I do not want is to waste another year, another roster spot, and any more cap space on Geno unless the FO/CS fully plans to test him or has already done so and finds something they can build on. Otherwise let's move on from that wreck.

I like Fitz as a possible starter and veteran teacher, Petty getting a chance to compete in his second year, and bring in another QB to round out the competition. I want whomever starts at QB for the Jets to have won the job against some tough competition..... I'm tired of our QB being the least smelly sack of shit we can place behind center.

Either he has it or he doesn't. I don't think anyone is worth waiting 5 years.
