I think we extend Fitz as the starter. I agree with what kevmvp said above, that he is the best we have had since Pennington - Favre aside. I think they will try to move Geno if he has any interest, or they will just keep him as a backup until something better presents itself, then cut him. Not sure if they think Petty is potentially the future or not, so maybe we look to draft another candidate and let the 3 of them go at it for 2 slots.
Yeah, I dont know what they think about Petty yet but I think Fitz at worst would be a great backup QB for us going forward if we are lucky enough to find another guy better than him. We just haven't been very lucky at the QB position, especially when it comes to drafting young players.
Thought he had a great game but we can't overreact game to game. It's sort of eerie how much his season with us is mirroring his season with Houston last year. If I recall, he was benched/injured in Houston and had a bad stretch, but came back with a 6 TD performance out of nowhere (like his 4 TD performance yesterday). Let's hope history doesn't repeat given that he melted down last year after the huge game. End of the day though, while a competent starter in most games, Fitz is still having the erratic performance swings that have marked his entire career. I still can't commit to him next season at this point.
I'd offer him a 2 year $10 mill deal similar to Brian Hoyer because I consider them in the same caliber of QB. That would give more time to develop Broadway Bryce. Fitz is 33 but I think a good stop gap option. He should be better in the system next year if we can fix the O-Line, develop Devin Smith and we get Jace Amaro back from injury.
Cough! Geno against Miami! Cough! Watching the end of the game on TV, the camera focused on Fitz and Bowles joking and laughing a bit. It was the happiest I've seen Bowles since maybe the start of the season. Its seems like those guys have a good rapport and Fitz has built a level of trust with his head coach. Like it or not, I think Fitz has sold Bowles on the idea that he is the stop gap player the Jets are looking for. My prediction is if he remains healthy the Jets will extend Fitz and make him the starter for next year. For a defensive minded coach like Bowles, someone like Fitz must seem like a good fit to manage the offense. This will give Bowles the freedom to build the defense his way to dominate games. While I like Fitz, and this is just a prediction, I think that would be a mistake. The Jets need to find their franchise QB. But from the last few weeks and how the Jets stuck by Fitz I think the Jets brain trust has made up their mind on him.
Fitz should 100% be back. Offer him a two year contract. 5 million next year with a 1 million signing bonus, then the 2nd year be based on playing time and incentives. Give Petty time to develop or wait until a top 15 QB hits the open market (IF). Fitz is doing a great job.
Bowles may be sold on Fitz. It would be hard not to be in terms of a short-term, stop gap starter. Hopefully, Bowles is smart enough to know that chances are he won't last long as Jets' HC if the Jets don't find a true franchise-caliber QB. Even if Bowles is that short-sighted, I doubt that Mac is. He knows that failure to find a long-term answer at QB has caused many a GM to lose his job. He also knows that Fitz is somewhat fragile and even as well as he has played this season, it could be a totally different story next season. He may let Fitz, Petty and a rookie QB battle it out in TC if one falls to the Jets that Mac likes, but I imagine it would probably be 2017 before the Jest draft another QB, if for no other reason, that there aren't many quality QB prospects in this draft and there could be a couple of quality prospects in 2017.
Hell, let him retire here. Give him a 3 to 4 year deal with a salary based on whether or not he starts. Even if he doesn't prove to be a long term answer as a starter, he's good enough to keep around as a backup.
On first glance, I like it, but what if Fitz comes back next year and is Fitzterrible? At his age the "magic" could disappear as quickly as it has appeared. It would all depend upon how the contract was structured and how much of dead money cap hit the team would take if/when his play fell off a cliff.
Why is there still a discussion here? The guy is getting the job done. He's the first guy in years without the happy feet of the indecisive. By all appearances his teammates and coaches like him there. Will he be around for ten years? No! Will Smith reemerge as the guy driving the bus? Doubtful? Will Petty show up sometime soon ready to lead the charge? Who? (Am I the only one who finds it odd that such a highly touted guy is today's invisible man?) That leaves Fitzpatrick who has not only been getting the job done, but doing it with confidence - a trait too seldom seen between Flushing Meadows and the Jersey Meadowlands. The incentive based contract suggested above works for me - of course a smart guy like Fitz will insist it starts with appropriate recognition of what has transpired to date and especially in the next two or, dare I say it?, three months.
I have only seen Cook three times or so and it bothers me because I see him throw like crap on very easy passes so often. Not accurate.
25 and 9 says it all. Although yesterday I thought he actually thought he threw a few dicey passes and got away with it. A bit of the old Fitz, but good fortune was with him. I think they dropped 2 INTs. Bowles wants him back,. I would be happy to see him back. What I really love about him is how smart he is about when to run. He kept that opening drive alive with a first down scamper. Finding Powell as a third option these last few games has been huge. He only had 2 guys to throw to before that. I just hope he can stay healthy
The price is gonna get driven up by desperate teams looking for a starter. Whenever a guy has a season like this, team's will offer stupid contracts to get the guy to be their savior, not realizing that he's succeeding here because of a perfect blend of offensive talent and scheme around his strengths. The Browns or somebody will make us pony up $11 mil per if we want to bring him back.
no way. nobody is offering Ryan Fitzpatrick $11 mill a year. not a chance in hell. he'd have to win out and light up the league. And by win out, I mean win out the regular season and Superbowl
Didn't the Browns give McCown $6 mil after going 1-10 with the Bucs? I think a veteran stop gap who just posted a winning record is gonna get at least an 8-9 annual offer from somebody.
