You're right, the ball hit the ground and then the hit was applied a split second later. Still looked like an iffy call.

Although in this NFL, Vernon Davis letting up probably made it look worse than it was even though Mitchell was playing to the whistle. I guess the refs thought since Davis acted like the play was dead, he should be free from getting popped

 

Exactly. Mitchell got penalized because Davis let up on a live ball.

 

Don't give Steve Smith a reason to get mad/angry, seems to play better that way
