Actually we got better in the secondary since last year. If you compare Patterson's tape from last year to Cro's it is indisputable who was the better corner in 2013. Also, Idzik did add depth at the position. He signed Lankster and Patterson, and drafted McDougle and Dixon. He also signed a number of guys including Dowling, Reeves, Patrick, and Lewis. Combine a first round safety and he actually strongly addressed the secondary. If McDougle didn't go down with an ACL we'd all be excited about seeing our 3rd round rookie play, but that's just no how it went down. Walls has shown a lot so far. He may not have the pedigree of whomever else you wanted but he has been making plays, and if you dispute that I can only surmise you haven't been watching the games closely. We have quality nickel and dime CB's, and when you can't put out two CB's out of an improving top 10 pick in Milliner, a seasoned vet in Patterson, a 3rd round rookie who's looking really good in camp, and a promising young UDFA and you can't put two CB's on the field, you've got some shit luck, not a bad GM. Not to mention Allen showed some nice athleticism as a CB in the Giants game, and he will definitely be back for the opener.
That's like saying Kyle Wilson was better than Darrelle Revis in 2012. It's just a dumb argument, one was clearly better than the other despite playing less.
Suspending him makes no sense,Idzik should have just fined him ,we are to thin at corner as it is.I'm sure we would cut him if we had depth. This was Idziks "Marquee" signing for the secondary. You get what you pay for in life most of the time, you want a cheap car?you buy a $1000 used 1992 ford taurus, you want a performance machine you break the bank on the ferarri.Patterson is the used 92 Ford Taurus of cornerbacks,it will get you to work but won't get you laid
Most of those guys are just camp bodies or backups at best, but okay, if you say so. The proof will come from the on-field product. Personally I'll be surprised if our pass defense if better than in the bottom half of the league and the only reason it'll be better than in the bottom third of the league is our front seven and increased pass rush presence. But, again, time will tell.
Every team has deficiencies. If (as you just stated) our weakness is masked by our strength, we're doing it right.
I think there is a lot of people overlooking the preseason and the affects on the cornerback position. The following does need to have a caveat that our CB situation is depressing. We have all seen this preseason the ridiculous amounts of flags that DBs are having to deal with. Rex has run one of the most aggressive defenses for years and our team is going to need some time for all the corners to adjust to these ticky tack calls. Hopefully they will back off the pace for the regular season. The league has been pandering to the QB's more and more and only when over/unders are in the 60's will they be happy. Ladies love the long ball right? Barely need to make completions anymore to have a passing attack, just throw it up and see which receiver got touched POW! Laundry everywhere and a first down. All this talk about trades just needs to stop, this is not Madden or fantasy football. Look at some recent trades: Trent Richardson to the Colts, so much for that Rolling ball of butcher knives. Anybody remember the straight up trade; Coles for Moss? We lost our asses. Doug Joley I am not sure I ever saw play a game, helluva deal there. I have faith that we will make the adjustments, Rex can scheme with the best of em on D. We all just need to figure out how to make the men in stripes happy and then make the adjustments with the pieces we have. BB did it for years, we can pull it out for a couple weeks till Dee is ready to roll. Until then, hope and pray. No call+No Show=No Job
You can't play CB in the NFL with a chronic bad hip. CB is all about hip rotation and Cro's injured hip is debilitating. That is why I think he wasn't signed. The Jets think he's done.
There are options out there in regards to DBs if Idzik wants to look - Terrell Thomas, Drayton Florence to name a few (decent nickel and dime guys). The outside is set with Dee and Walls IMO - we need a nickel, potential dime CBs.
No it isn't. Once a player develops a history of injuries that keep him off the field, that goes into assessing his value as a player. Cromartie played hurt last year because the Jets wanted him out there, so OF COURSE it hurt his stats and comparable play. If Patterson had done the same thing, if he even could have, would that not have hurt his stats, and your assessment of his play? How did Patterson's replacements do? If you can't stay on the field, you're not helping your team.
How can anyone argue with this logic here. If I miss my day at work and dont call because i willingly DONT. Then i deserved to be fired or suspended
It depends on the type of injury. If it's the type that hampers play for a career, you look at that player as being lower in ability. If it forces him to miss time but when he returns he will be the same, then you consider it but not on the same level as one that permanently affects you. It also causes you to financially value a player differently.
Hopefully this suspension is just a tactic to make sure that his salary for this year doesn't become fully guaranteed. Does anybody with knowledge of this type of thing know if that's possible or is happening ? I know that I read somewhere that if he's on the roster for opening day it becomes guaranteed.
