Yeah, the halfback and fullback terms are now misnomers.

From a common sense standpoint, Lorenzo Neal is not a fullback. He lines up between LT and the quarterback. Tomlinson should be listed as a fullback or tailback. Neal should be listed as a blocking back or halfback.

Jim Brown was a fullback. He had a smaller halfback named Ernie Green who frequently acted as his lead blocker. That's just one example from the 1960s.

When the I-formation came into vogue the fullback began to line up between the QB and the HB. This seems to be where the fullback and halfback terminology got scrambled.

Maybe it is because the Full back is full sized while the half back is half the size.

Yeah but then how would you explain the difference between a quarter pounder and a big mac?

Yes, you are correct. The fullback was the back furthest from the line of scrimmage back in olden times. Often times that player was bigger than his lead blocker halfback.

Isn't a Big Mac bigger than a Quarter pounder? Doesn't that explain itself? Why don't they call it a half pounder ever? Are you still in here?

Anyone know why Don Maynard's Titans football card ids him as a half back? He's pretty small for that.

He began his career as a halfback with the Giants in 1958.
