I'm not sure that a 35 year old center coming off a major injury is worth a 7th round draft pick, but I think this cut was meant to send a signal.... Edwards is gone. Show up for meetings, all of them, on time, and keep your opinions out of the press, or be gone. These guys are establishing a new culture, a winning one. Get in line, stay in line, or suffer the consquences.
I might agree with you about Mawae's worth or lack of worth. But he is certainly worth more than Cowart. Maybe they wouldn't be able to find a trading partner but there was no reason not to hang on to him for an extra month or two and try not to get any value for him. Releasing immeditaely may have more to do with ego, lack of patience and lack of experience on the part of the wonder kids. If Bradway had done this without atempting to get any value for Mawae people on this board would be all over him. There would be 10 threads a day calling him incompetent.
Yes, you're right.... the Tangini's are enjoying the honeymoon at this point..... but in addition, they have so far done a very good job. That helps. Bradway's honeymoon was over a long time ago. Actually, I thought Cowart was worth more.... he wasn't that old,and there was a decent chance he could make a nice comeback. he also wasn't as ...ah... vocal as Mawae. I think they wanted to avoid any possible pissing matches with Mawae, something he had no qualms about getting into, with anyone, on any level in the organisation..... even with the fans.
They cut him and cut him early because he is a veteran player who has earned the right to try and get a good deal on his terms. It was a classy move that was intended to send a message that this is an organization that is tough but fair.
I agree with you on the vocal part and pissing match part and that is most likely the reason he was cut to shut him up. But it comes down do you want to reward a player who shoots his mouth off like he was and or make him sweat for a month or two while you try to get some value for him. I don't think its a big deal either way but you can get lucky in the 6th and 7th round. What I found interesting was that this was the first real decision the wonder kids had to make and they seemed to take the easy way out. It just makes me wonder if they are ready for the big stage.
The easy way out? I don't agree.... this was the hard way out. With holes on the O line, and Mawae being a fan favorite, they made the tough decision. Look at how much grief they have gotten over this... Mawae on the radio, Mawae fans up in arms, and we're still talking about it. No, I think these two will do what they want, when they want, with what they think is best for the team as the only priority. They haven't even attempted to make any public comments on Mawae's release.... they just let him talk. This is a marked difference between them and their predecessors. They just don't give a shit what it might look like. They will take the heat, and continue to do what they think is best, damn the cannons. I like it.... a LOT.
Again I respectfully disagree. Its much easier to cut him, get nothing in return and move on. Then keep him, endure the heat of him still being here and doing the work to try to trade him for value. The easy way out is to say goodbye. The hard way is trying to get value for him like we did with a player we were foing to cut like Cowart. I undertand the new FO are to a certain extent probably feeling inferior and bit insecure and most likely don't think they can take as much heat as a more expereinced and respected FO. But giving away players for nothing will not get them the respect they want. Nor will it do anything to attract FA's to the Jets or the improve the Jets image.
how cool was the thing when he was baggin on rhonde barber and barber tried to punch him and hit the ref in the head
In a new era his leadership skills would actually have been questionable. i think Tangini saw upfront the danger of Mawae dividing the Jets locker room. Mawae is too outspoken in some instances and would have threatened Mangini's authority. That is the last thing that we need going into rebuilding. This had absolutely nothing to do with money. Mawae could have had a 1$ contract and still would have been shown the door. Anyone who has ever dealt with office politics and management changes knows exactly what I am talking about.
If Mawae was that much of a threat, maybe it is because he has more football experience and knowledge than the head coach? I am not anti-Mangini, I havent seen enough to form a strong view, I just wonder if this is how the FO intends to handle any player who may say too much. If it is, we could be in trouble, great players are going to be outspoken (Curtis aside). If Mangini is as good as he is expected to be, he should be able to handle the players, even if they are his own age.
Groh was no youngster when Mawae led the mutiny against him, and Mangini was here at the time to see it.
I am not doubting Mawae can get out of hand. I just think it shows poor leadership to not be able to handle it I know Mawae is not the player he was, but he is a better center than Kendall. I doubt that Mangini is concerned he can casue some waves, but it bugs me that he doesnt think he could handle it and this was an easier out. If we get Mangold or Eslinger, with a late 1st, early 2nd, i am ok with it, I just dont want to watch Kendall fumbling, bumbling all over the place this year. We are going to have enough things to fix. Thats all. And Groh was a joke, never cut out for the NFL proven since he couldnt handle professionals... I am hoping Mangini is a different story.
I agree.... I just put up my first Jets mock in the draft forum, and i have optomistally taken mangold in the second. I don't want Kendall to touch the ball.... ever.
