The Jets, the Bills, the Raiders, and the Redskins all come to mind as teams that could have been interested in Volek during the preseason.

    The first three- no way.

The Redskins? Well, only if they thought Todd Collins was worthless and Jason Campbell wasn't ready.

I suppose you mean "preseason" as meaning the spring. Well, this Volek issue only reared its head in August. I understand Volek may have gotten under Fisher's skin prior to this year but as of early to mid August 2006 Volek was the #1 QB for the Titans.

I don't feel they squandered an opportunity to trade him for a better pick. If anything, maybe they could have let him stick around for a couple more weeks in case a starter went down to injury. Looks like the Titans couldn't stomach him any longer and had to get him off the team asap, so they sent him to a team that wanted an experienced backup QB.

Was this addressed to me or statjeff22?

I did not read the article, but I did see Fisher talking about Volek on tv tonight. I saw all that before what I posted in post 22.

I respectfully disagree. The Jets were supposedly counting on Ramsey to at least be the #2 starter, and he was pathetic all through training camp. If they could have gotten Volek for a 6th rounder in August I think they would have jumped at the chance, and I think they would have gone higher. The Raiders signed Jeff George in August, so the only reason they wouldn't have been interested in Volek is that Al Davis is probably senile. The Bills are starting J.P. Losman at QB - the same J.P. Losman who had a 49.6% completion percentage and 64.9 QB rating last year. In the limited playing time he's gotten, Volek has been a far better player.

It's quite possible that Volek was completely insufferable as soon as camp started, but the Titans didn't sign Collins until the end of August. They certainly knew by then that they couldn't stand Volek any more, but by signing Collins they made that obvious to every one else in the league, driving his value down so much that they could barely get anything for him.

The Jets would have had to trade Ramsey and Bollinger if they traded for Volek because Clemens and Pennington were making the team. Then Volek would have had to learn the Jets playbook blah blah blah.

With Losman and Holcomb on board, the Bills wouldn't have made a play for Volek who is not really any better than they are.

With Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter on the team, I don't think the Raiders would have had serious interest in Volek. They thought Brooks would be good with them and they think Walter may be good down the road.

You're obviously entitled to your opinion, but I think my arguments are just as sound. Walter being good down the road has nothing to do with signing Volek - if the Raiders want to cut him next year, they do it. Aaron Brooks is hardly good enough to be guaranteed a starting spot for the entire season. And remember - they signed Jeff George for a week, so they must have had some doubts about their QB situation.

Neither have played a lot, but Volek has been far better than Losman his entire career - it's not even close.

I think the Jets would be thrilled to replace Ramsey with Volek right now, let alone in August, purely on the basis of football (I'm not talking about any of the drama going on now, since the Jets wouldn't have known about it in August anyway).

We'll just agree to disagree I suppose.

I don't understand the Jeff George thing and I don't care to speculate because that is a weirdo team.

Volek has been better than Losman*, but this is Losman's third season and the Bills back in August were steadfast that he was the starter. Also, the backup QB is a pretty good.

As for the Jets, based on football I don't know about that. You'd be talking about assimilating Volek to the Jets and their system and playbook in late August. Maybe had Ramsey gotten injured in a preseason game and was out for the year, the Jets could have made a move for Volek.

*With that said, Volek was very Elvis Grbacy in 2004. He put up big numbers in shootouts. Off the top of my head, one was a back-and-forth game vs KC on MNF and the other was against Oakland which the Titans lost 40-35. When he played against a good team (Denver) he stunk up the stadium.

    re: last paragraph in 22

Yeah, maybe the Buccaneers would have had interest.
