This. Manning's wanted a GUARANTEE that he'd be picked #1 overall, and Parcells said he wouldnt gurantee anything, so Manning went back to school (and still lost to the Gators Not taking Pace was a bonehead move though
Parcell's response to the Manning's ultimatum was a classic case of "Cutting off your nose to spite your face". Parcells was old school, and believed in the hierarchical structure and military mindset of never questioning your superiors. The Mannings challenging that structure was unacceptable to him. It was like allowing the inmates to run the asylum. Parcells did a lot of smart things in his career, but this was probably his dumbest.
No, I don’t have my years mixed up. The Jets had the top pick in 1997 and Manning opted to stay in college. That was the Peyton Manning fiasco I was referring to.
“They had the No.1 pick the next year as well because Kotite somehow made the worst team in the league in 1995 even worse in 1996. The Peyton Manning fiasco convinced them to trade out of the No.1 spot. “ Well if you mean that happened before draft THAT year, not the year before. You are right, I misunderstood your post. But same result we traded down, in hindsight not good move! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes, we took Keyshawn after that awful 1995 season and still got worse in 1996, so we had the top pick in 1997 as well. And missing out on Pace was bad, but missing out on Manning was nothing short of a tragedy. Just one of many great quarterbacks the Jets could’ve had...
I didn't say it was a "genius move". I simply recapped everything he has done in his first year that is a positive. Also in his first year, he turned 7 picks into 13 players. Again, this was in response to someone claiming his first year has been "gad damn awful".
It was not the entire offseason. In fact, there were some moves he made that are iffy, at best. And again you are blatantly ignoring the fact that we have a piss poor offense because of a coach he did not hire and many players he did not sign. We have a piss poor offense because he was given a shit sandwich when he showed up. And again you seem to think a GM can turn around an ENTIRE roster in one year, which is absolutely ridiculous. Claiming the jury is still out on him is one thing. I agree with that statement. But saying his first year has been "god damn awful" is fuckin absurd.
I know, I literally cried. Lol. Manning a jet, would have been phenomenal. Colts were relevant like 20 yrs because of that. Same with Marino being jet, and farve being jet, oh, he was, but too late, too soon leaving! Lol. Oh the misery of jet fan! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
i stand by it & i dont care.He is just as damaging to this franchise as Gase. Fuck the honeymoon period. That first offseason was inexcusable. He had a whole year to self evaluate, research FAs/draft prospects & set up infrastructure. This team got worse. And hes only getting started w hos buddy gase driving us further into the ground. Dont say i didnt tell you so.
It really is cruel, isn't it? Missing one of those I could kind of shrug off. But missing all three? We would have drafted Favre if we hadn't spent our first-round pick in the supplemental draft the year before, on Rob Moore. I loved Moore, but he was just another top receiver the Jets had and then let go when it was time for a new contract... Moore, Keyshawn, Coles, Santana Moss (to get Coles back, admittedly, but who came out on top in that trade?), and now Anderson. Clueless team.
Agree. And I am JD fan and I will give him time, since. 1st time GM, but when Parcells came in 97, he turned the team around one year and one draft and off season. He was far from perfect as GM, but got good results. So yr 2 of JD, 2 drafts and 2 off seasons, lots of cap. Etc. We should see some positive results next yr! Not that we see playoffs, but should be competitive. Keeping gase around is just hampering the process in my opinion! So hopefully he gone sooner than later! Regardless we will be in top 5 discussion. And maybe waiting for bye week. But If for some miracle we win 2-3 games in a row, I don’t want that idiot to get some revival. That would be worst thing! Well we had chance in 2nd round, and atl moved ahead of us. We could have traded up. We stayed and picked crap QB! Even then we still could have traded for him! ATL sent to GB. I know Bradway was fan, but did not pull trigger on that. Even then we finally got him in the house, but leaves after 1yr and draft dirty sanchez, if he had stayed we may have 2 SBs. Moore was great, and of course we did not sign, he went to ARI, we got Hugh Douglas with the pick, then traded him for 2nd rounder, that turned into trash. Wow amazes me we always end up with short end. It must be curse! You can’t make this shit up. No one would believe you. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
WHat did he do before that game? Not much from most reports. And, the C has not been as good as advertised so I respectfully disagree.
NC's post summed it up the best... its CJ call period. I would suspect that if CJ had any common sense - which is an assumption on my part - he would have discussed it with team Pres, JD, Woody.... maybe the janitor... the real culprit is: From NYPost: CJ's record as CEO now stands at 16-37. The team has gone 5-11, 4-12, 7-9, and 0-5 in the four seasons you have been in charge. The best season on paper was last year’s seven win campaign. That isn’t a very good season, but even that 7-9 record was a total mirage build on an incredibly soft schedule and a lot of luck. The Jets have been at the bottom of the league since he took over as CEO, and things haven’t changed.
I know this is shitty but the NFL is a cut throat business. why not just tell him yes and then not do it if you don't want to? not like he could force you to?
* I don't think it matters whether or not Cannon is good or not. When the best coach on the team publicly praises him in the press and calls him a top 5 gunner in the league and one of his core special teams players you don't turn around and cut the guy the next day especially when you are at 90 on the roster unless your intent is to piss off that coach. The fact that Cannon went high on the waiver list is irrelevant and neither is the poor gunner play we have had this year. You give your special teams coach a few of his core guys. The only way I read this is this was an attack by Gase at Boyer saying I am in charge and your time here is not long. Which makes a lot of sense as Boyer was forced on Gase by Mac by, Boyer is one of the few Jets coaches that gets consistent praise and Gase is one of the most insecure humans on the planet. I like JD overall but he is not perfect. I would argue the bottom of the roster should mainly be for core ST guys but I understand JD needs to defer to Gase and give Gase what he wants on small matters like this even when it is clear Gase is acting out again. But, one of the benefits to having JD was supposed to be his ability to reign in the bad insecure Adam and help him be less of an Ass. Maybe that is an impossible task but on this task JD has failed.
Cannon should've been retained. He was a fantastic special teams player and gunner. If you keep 8 defensive tackles for three spots, you can cut one for a special teams ace. New England has kept Matthew Slater for over a decade to go make tackles on special teams. And pin teams with awful starting position because of it. They also used to have Larry Izzo. It's a thankless job but important. The idea is to keep good football players. Remove Cannon's designation as a RB. He did what he needed to do to get on the field and contribute. Cutting those guys sets a bad precedent.
I had wondered that about Cannon getting cut and again it has shown in the ST play this season, is it the same from Williams and the D both giving the finger to Gase. What a truly horrible HC he is.
