I get that it's an imperfect and seemingly screwy way of breaking ties, but what you suggest is worse. Flipping a coin has nothing to do with how the teams performed on the field and is just totally capricious luck. That would be the most unfair way of deciding. The only fair and logical way is to base it on games played on the field, and that mean head-to-head games, games where they played the same opponent, and played teams within their own conference. It's not perfect, but there's no other reasonable way in which to do it. There's absolutely no way the NFL could adopt the MLB system. That's absurd.
I wasn't really serious with the flip a coin thing in terms of an actual proposal anyway. it seems just as logical though as basing tiebreakers off of loose connections like common opponents in a league that prides itself on parity and "any given sunday" however. i don't think adopting a play in game is "absurd" though. Goodell and his cronies would love it .extra $$ for the league. also the fairest way of breaking a tie. its only an absurd proposal if you want it to be
Come on, think about it. There are huge differences between MLB and the NFL. It's nothing for MLB to schedule an extra game. They have to do it all the time anyway due to inclement weather shortening or canceling games and where teams already play each other multiple times, and there are extra days/dates built into the schedule, so it's easy. I don't think I need to go into the differences in the two games in terms of the toll on players bodies. If you add in potential tie-breaker games that would add at a minimum an extra week in the season, and potentially, two or more extra weeks. In a scenario where 3 or more teams were tied, to be fair, each of those teams should play each other. You could then be adding an additional month or more to the season. The SB used to be in early January I believe. They added two games to the regular season, so it's now in February, or pretty close to it, isn't it? NFL in March anyone? Weather is already a huge factor as well. Making the season longer just increases the chances that weather could cause problems and additional expense, and that players who are already tired and beaten up could suffer career-ending injuries. In the situation where four teams are tied, it would mean that one of those four teams would have to play and win 7 or 8 playoff games instead of 4. That's half a season. The only way I could see your idea possibly working would be to do away with preseason games and then go back to a 14-game season. I don't think the NFL owners would ever agree to that. It would mean too much lost revenue.
I stand by the thread. It was just for fun with Geno. I mostly wanted to explain how the tiebreaker with the Steelers worked out and how the Raiders game was so important.
Wow this thread just shows people want to blame Geno for everything. People don't want to blame Fitz for his 3ints in 4th quarter of Bills game. But they have no problem blaming Geno for the Raiders game where the D couldn't stop them at all. This thread says it all about most Geno haters.
It's pretty funny, but let's be honest, every game the Jets lost were winnable if not for stupidity/not showing up. Plus, if the Jets won the game in Oakland, they would have been 11-5 so they would have made the playoffs without the need for the tiebreaker.
Very true. That is why missing the playoffs hurts so much. The Jets have no one to blame but themselves.
I'm not certain that Geno cost us a playoff spot, but I'm pretty sure that his jaw surgery raised my health insurance premiums.
as another posted stated, if we won the raiders game then there is no tie with the steelers and no tiebreaker this thread makes no sense on many levels
Do you understand how tiebreakers work? I explained that is how the Jets missed the playoffs. Obviously if they beat the Raiders they would be 11-5. They lost to them though and Pittsburgh beat them. If the Jets lost to the Redskins, but beat the Raiders, then they would have been in the playoffs. Etc. Not that complicated. The thread was for fun. Not serious about Geno or the loss to the Raiders being the only reason. It just came down to being the final reason. Get it?
if the jets lost to washington but beat oakland (or any other afc team that they lost to) they would have been in over pitt due to conference record and not common games your thread is still nonsense
You have to admit this thread is a joke. Some Geno fans have said some dumb things on here during the season. I don't think he started this as a joke like he saying. Who in hell writes all that just for a joke.
