Don't worry, Stephen Hill was http://www.forums.theganggreen.com/threads/stephen-hill-appreciation-thread.73972/
Projects are for baseball where they have minor leagues for them to grow. The NFL is the win now league. Devin Smith sucks. Geno Smith Sucks. No more Smiths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was fun: Barcs is the gift that keeps on giving. Then I got to my post where I called Mark Sanchez "a real quarterback". Sadface like a motherfucker.
There's a certain amount of inception in that Barcs post. It's an old post in a Stephen Hill appreciation thread sarcastically mocking people who said Hill would be a bust, being brought up by someone 4 years later sarcastically mocking people who are calling Devin Smith a bust. He's doing the exact opposite of what I just did.
That thread is like seeing old pictures of yourself in the fad clothes of the time. You shake your head and wonder what you were thinking
So rookies are allowed to make mistakes, but not this mistake? c'mon man. Obviously the kid had a really disappointing rookie year. The injury doesn't help the situation either. This mistake sucked, but it doesn't make him a bust.
Mistake? This is fundamental football: Take a knee in the endzone or else hold on to the ball. That handed the game to Buffalo! I think it is YOU who is making way too light of this.
He was a rookie who didn't have many opportunities and wanted to make a play. It was a stupid mistake. Rookies make them all the time.
ugh i was at that game in Green Bay. i remember thinking great, Milliner and Pryor, two first round picks that can't cover deep.. our secondary (along with Geno Smith) absolutely sabotaged the season.
Petty is ready to be a backup QB. That's what most successful 4th round QB's do. WR is a position that often takes a year or two to acclimate to the NFL. NFL CB's are good. They're great compared to most NCAA CB's. Putting a WR one on one as a rookie against them is likely be rocky unless the WR is a great talent. You have a better chance to have a slot guy come in and contribute right away because he's matched up against a nickel CB. Smith still has a chance to be good. The injuries, like Milliner's injuries, are a warning sign about his ability to play in the NFL at all.
The thing about Smith is that he is weak. He's listed at 199 lbs but there is no way I believe that. He looks like he's built the same as he was as a freshman at Ohio State. He was listed at 175lbs as a high school senior, that sounds more accurate today. Look at his frame. small arms, thin legs, slender build. In today's game receivers don't have to be built like monsters but most small receivers have either strong lower bodies or slippery, savvy know how that they aren't affected by corners bumping them at the line of scrimmage. Smith has not shown that yet. I thought when we drafted him that it was pretty telling that Ohio State would often take him out of the game in base sets. He would come in when they went 3 wide or when they could get him matched up against a smaller corner and not the big boys in man coverage. Thats not usually something you like to see from a receiver you take at number 37- essentially a 1st round pick. All of that showed. His first year here he was really affected by physical play. Corners muscled him out of the way, muscled the ball away from him, and then he gets injured. I'm not saying he is a lost cause or anything but the dude needs to get stronger and tougher. Some guys can do that. some can't. -- one last thing I'll say is that while I highlighted his weaknesses he does have strengths especially in the deep passing game. With Fitzpatrick's pop gun arm there was no way to emphasize his strengths. A deep route with Fitzpatrick at QB will always require a receiver to get up and fight for the ball. That's not Smith's game. A better deep passing QB that can get the ball out in front of him would emphasize his strengths and might be better for him than anything else.
