No more of a moron then someone who tries to evaluate how their favorite player's performance in the clutch SEEMS to them.
It's not the AMOUNT of those hits, it's the fact that he is only 2-56 in those situations. A single is all it takes to score two from second and third the majority of the time, and Jeter is only 2-56 in that situation from the 8th inning on, not very good and certainly not something that indicates a "clutch" player. Aside from his amazing three walkoff hits and record 19 RBI in the 2004 playoffs, Ortiz has shown clutchness all over. From 2003-2005, he hit .326 with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs in 221 at bats in the late innings of close games. Last year he hit 20 tying or go ahead home runs, 8 in the 7th inning or later. In 2004 he had 33 go ahead RBI and 50 RBI with two outs. Ask any AL pitcher who they'd least like to face with the game on the line, and it will likely be Ortiz.
It kills me to say it but a case can be made for Larry Jones over any other MLb player. He's come up huge in the regular season and the playoffs time after time.
valuable points from kinghenry89 Please re-read the first post of this thread. I stressed the fact that jeter could be the only baseball player in history to play his entire career in the playoffs, and have won 4 titles. Someone mentioned andruw jones did also, so i said fine, but andruw jones is not in the caliber of a derek jeter when it comes to clutch. Kinghenry made a valuable point on jeter being at the top of the lineup and is a rally starter not a finisher. All these other guys you are trying to compare are not top of the order hitters, who start rally's. This thread is probably going to be the derek jeter 2006 thread. And so far jeter has delivered, as a top of the order hitter, rally starter, and clutch player. Bow to the mighty yankees. I saw this sign at yankee stadium: "Welcome johnny, where it doesn't take 86 years to win" Hahaha priceless.
Again... That stat where it says jeter is 2-56 after the 8th inning is ridiculous, the yankees usually have the lead after the 8th inning, that's when the bullpen comes in and then mariano shuts the door, jeter knows mariano is automatic, therefore he needs not to stress getting an extra hit. Please tell me if jeter wasn't a yankee would the yankees won 4 titles? I say they would have won 2. If andruw jones the other player who has been in the playoffs his whole career, wasn't a brave would they have won that one title? Yes they would have.
My point is who would you have at bat in the world series game 7 down by 1? Note that the opposing team will have to face mariano rivera. Jeter is the man... MR. NOVEMBER... 8 game hitting streak for jeter.
It's pretty amazing that in a thread bout being "clutch" some NYY fans would argue for Jeter all day long and not even mention MR.
No im basically saying jeter does not have to face mariano. But you metfans had to face him in 2000 when you lost to us for our 26th title.
@ one time.. This thread was supposed to be about the superstar jeter being and could be the only player in history to play his entire career in the playoffs. That clutch thing was brought up, and i agree jeter is clucth and ask any player in any team if they would want jeter as their SS they would say yes in a heartbeat.
You want an example? How about the 2000 World Series. Who was MVP? I'm talking about clutch being making huge game altering plays in situations of the highest magnitude. Starting the rally in Game 4 of the '96 WS, the entire 2000 WS as mentioned, the game saving flip in the '01 ALDS that changed the whole series around, the walk off HR in Game 4 of the '01 WS, his performance in Game 7 of the '03 ALCS, just to name a few. And if you want to come back with times he didn't come through, keep in mind that not even the greatest athletes can deliver every single time. But you want stats anyway? Ok, he has a lifetime .307 postseason average and is the all time leader in postseason hits. Just because your hate/ jealousy of him and the Yankees produces a biased view, does not take away from what he really is.
His career average is LOWER in the postseason. His hr per game go DOWN in the postseason. His rbi per game go DOWN in the postseason. If a player hits .500 in the postseason but hits .600 in the regular season it doesn't make him clutch. It makes him the greatest player every but to be clutch you have to perform not just great but BETTER then you do in normal situations. And your point about him being the all time postseason leader in hits is irrelevent because of the fact that you could probably count the number of players who have played as many postseason games as jeter on one hand.
Let's just say jeter is more clutch than any met on your roster in the past 10 years... And in the future 10 years..enough said.
Why do you always compare everything to the Mets? Don't worry, rog, it's ok to come out and admit you're a Mets fan.
^hahaha if there were red sox fans or anybody from any other club in this thread i would focus on them... Don't worry exit 117, your team isn't that bad.
You do understand that the quality of pitching goes UP in the postseason, so a .300 BA looks extremely impressive, right?
