Oh shit... so it feels like everyday the offense is dominating. making good plays and burning the defense... Im a pathetic nervous jets fan who makes a big deal out of everything-- I hope this truly speaks to the strength of our offense and not the ineptitude of our defense (yea i know, its only training camp). Is there a way when we could see that both our offense AND our defense dominate in training camp? if we can do that, it's superbowl, baby!
Five reasons our good defense of last year will be twice as effective this year. 1. Another year in the defense for players to perfect the complicated scheme. 2. Returning all our starters on defense, but one. 3. Added youth to the D-line with Ropati back and drafting Wilkerson & K. Ellis. These three young guys replace S. Ellis, Pryce and Jenkins. (You could also include Taylor who was primarily a pass rusher.) 4. Better D-line rotation. We have six good very BIG linemen who we can rotate and move about to keep them fresh. (Pouha 325, Wilkerson 315, Devito 305, Pitoitua 315, Dixon 295 and Ellis 330) When your smallest D-linemen out of six is 295 lbs. they will wear down that O-line. 5. Our DB depth is incredible. In a CB driven league we are bring back our top five backs from last season and adding a proven guy in Strickland. Not to mention we have three guys who started at safeties for us last season coming back in Leonard, Pool and Smith. No team is going to want to face this defense and even if we aren't the 85 Bears we will be the #1 defense this year.
Good post. If Sanchez takes the leap and plays halfway-decent this year, no team outside of maybe the Pats will want to play us. I can definitely see #1 D/Top 10 O in the optimal scenario.
The only way to derail Patriots offense is to play them physical. That's the only way, really. Receivers must be jammed at the line at all times. That 5 yard jam zone is a gift from the league, really. (If Cro learns to do this...) Patriots are not really loading up on their OL or RB for whatever reason I have no idea about. Going Air Erhardt against this D isn't going to be pretty.
Last year Cromartie and Pool had to learn our Defense, with Revis missed games plus Wilson being a rookie we were not half as good as we will be coming out of the gate this year. Our D-line was below average as soon as Jenkins fell. This year we have a great group of D-linemen and should be able to get pressure with just 3 or 4 guys. Five big injuries heart this team last season. Jenkins, Revis, Leonard, Pace and Ropati who might be the biggest surprise this season. If we can stay healthy just maybe the 1985 Bears and 2000/2006 Ravens aren't any better than what we can achieve. I think we have a better group on offense than any of those groups and the longer your team has the ball, the less chance for the other team has to score.
To be fair the Patriots already had a good OL, retruned all their starters (I think) and have Nate Solder waiting in the wings
???? The Patriots kept last year's o-line and TEs, drafted Solder in the first and drafted RBs in rounds two and three.
Pats allowed 25 sacks and 52 QB hits, with one of the best QBs in NFL history. Jets allowed 28 sacks and 52 QB hits, with my mancrush at QB. nohomo
To be honest those RBs suck, they have what 13 running backs on the roster right now and only BJGE is any decent.
Neither of us know whether Vereen or Ridley (or Powell or J. McKnight for that matter) will be any good.
hahaha- C'Mon man, you don't seriously think Woodhead is the "bell cow" of your RBs. The only thing that makes Woodhead a threat is Brady. The little guy is fun to watch but team will be well aware of him now.
Woodhead is very effective in the Pats offense with Brady under center. Why are we even talking about the Pats O?
Woodhead's good in space but he's not a particularly good tailback. Green-Ellis is the only guy that I'm afraid of running the ball between the tackles (in fact, I think that Green-Ellis is one of the most underrated players in football--everybody was so busy slurping Woodhead last year that they barely noticed BJGE rush for a thousand yards.)
Sanchez's numbers in these drills are scaring me. It's been two or three days now where his completions have been well under 50% in training camp. I'm sure the defense is incredible out there but I'd like to see him go 10-13 with a TD or two instead of 7-19 with an INT. I guess the offense is rusty with all the downtime and new receivers. Wouldn't be surprised if the Jets offense is stagnant to start the season again. Teh defense will be tremendous though.
