I'm not defending anything. I'm telling you what I think. You don't like it tough shit. Time is going to answer this question. We are both on record.

Xavier Rhodes would be better in this defense given what Rex Ryan wants to do (press man coverage, zero coverage blitzes). All rookies will have their ups and downs because very very few guys are like Patrick Peterson, but Milliner clearly doesn't have the physical attributes that a top 10 corner should have.

Rhodes will be better than Milliner. A better physical specimen and played well in predominantly man coverage in college at FSU. More physical at the line of scrimmage too. How many times can Milliner fail to get a jam on a guy and just get straight beat off the line? Reminiscent of Kyle Wilson way too often.

Rhodes is a press coverage CB. That's what he is. Milliner has all the tools to be a good press cover CB but he can and did play more zone in college. Rhodes has been good in the few games he's started but up until recently he has been an off the bench player. He hasn't been thrown into the fire like Milliner.

Your post brought up a good question for me. Was Milliner Rex's pick over Rhoades a pure press cover player or did Idzik take him thinking the Jets weren't always going to be an exclusive press cover team and Milliner can do more?

I can't argue you're point because it's a fair point. But Milliner doesn't have to be the best CB out of this draft he just has to be a very good CB for this to be a good pick.

Same can be said about the Geno and Richardson picks as on paper neither are ideal fits for the WCO and 3-4 defense respectively. Idzik was either staying true to his BPA philosophy, playing the ground work for life after Rex and MM or both.

  5. Exactly.

This is how very young teams perform. People who thought we'd be a legit contender starting 5 rookies were kidding themselves.

When it comes to rookies you have to take the good w/the bad. So far all 5 have had exactly that. You'd consider that a positive track but who knows moving forward who becomes legit & who busts. One thing is for sure...If Milliner/Richardson/Smith/Winters/Buchanon all solidfy & end up starters..that's a pretty darn good first draft for Mr. Idzik,

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight, I'M the troll, and you're the well informed poster with a balanced perspective. Thanks for clearing that up again.

And for the record this game isn't his first week of looking like an NFL CB, it's his 2nd or 3rd which I pointed out at the time. When he came back with the rookie mistakes the next game you jumped right back into your psychobabble
and I even came and acknowledged his poor showing right after, not a day later after making a bunch of posts in other threads like you.

Guess what, if he plays bad again in any of these last three games I'll own up to it again when you start back up; meanwhile you're not going to have a word to say about it in a year or two when he's the best CB on the roster and a strength of the team.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Idzik and the scouting department probably felt that Milliner was going to develop into an all around more versatile type of corner, and given the notion that this was really a "lame duck" type of season for Rex, Idzik took what he thought was the better all around scheme versatile player. I've never felt that way about Milliner, however, as I feel that most Alabama DB's are vastly overrated due to a great front 7 they play behind. I preferred Rhodes at CB or Kenny Vaccarro at S or Alec Ogletree at LB.

Because not many coaches choose to play as much press coverage and zero coverage as Rex Ryan. Almost nobody. So in all likelihood the next coach would be playing a lot more 2 deep coverages and mixing in more zone coverages as well, because very few defensive coordinators choose to play as aggressively as Rex likes to. Hence, Idzik took the better "all around/complete" prospect in his mind. Good point by you.

I also don't think Rex is the greatest at evaluating corners because he's supposedly "had some say" on both Wilson and Milliner, and both guys have been disappointments so far. Even when he reportedly loved McCourty, McCourty had that great rookie season playing predominantly zone and off man coverage. The next season when Belichick tried to play more press man coverage with his corners, McCourty failed miserably and was moved to safety because of how frequently he was burned.

I find it interesting that Minnesota, a team that has been a big time Cover 2 zone defense under Leslie Frazier all these years, decided to take Rhodes. Yes, Rhodes is good at jamming guys at the line (which is important in Cover 2 defenses) due to his size and experience in press coverage, but his noted strength coming out of college was his man coverage. But now you've drafted him to play him in a scheme that is zone heavy, so his best skills will not be used to their potential? It seems counter-intuitive. I would have loved to see Rhodes go to a team that plays a lot of man coverage, like the Jets. I think he would likely have more success.

It's like the Cowboys investing a lot of assets in Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne, attempting to get two press man corners to play on islands Rob Ryan's aggressive defense, only to fire Rob Ryan and bring in Monte Kiffin and his cover 2 defense. Seems like backward logic in both cases.

Rhodes also has a future at safety later in his career.

Milliner might not have been the best DB in the draft, but he was the best DB on the field last Sunday against the Raiders.

Gave up 5 catches for over 60 yards. Should of given up a TD on a pass down the left sideline but the ball was overthrown. (he has been extremely fortunate on overthrows too this year).

That isnt saying much honestly since its the Raiders and Cro is obviously hurt. Lets see how he plays against the next 3 opponents. All with pretty good receivers.

I think the secondary will be markedly better next season. Cro's problem has either been his hip or his age. Idzik will figure that out and hopefully make the right move. Milliner should have a full offseason and camps to grow and improve and he should be better. Aaron Berry was looking good before his injury and hopefully he will be back. I think Idzik will definitely address the S position in either FA or the draft or both. I'll be surprised if Ed Reed or Landry is back. I also think it's quite possible that Idzik will sign a FA CB like a Sam Shields or Brent Grimes to help shore up the CB position, especially if he decides to move on from Cro.

No one ever accused Jerry Jones of being the sharpest pencil in the box. It is amazing how often this kind of thing happens in the NFL. Teams constantly draft a player who excels in one style of play then ask him to play in a totally different manner or system where his skills are not a match. Some players have more system or style versatility than others, but many are more limited. In spite of all the physical and mental testing and all the $s spent on evaluating prospects, many in the NFL (if not most) have never learned to not try to fit square pegs into round holes or to not expect players to do something which they're not capable/able to do.

smith gets most of the attention, and Richardson so far gets all the accolades. But going forward Milliner may prove to be the most critical of the 2013 draft picks. The team's ability to make moves at safety, and not to mention other current holes on the team, will depend in large measure on Milliner. Whether Ryan stays or goes Milliner's ability to stick at starting Cb and to play a decent amount of man coverage will affect everything.

This gets to the heart of why team management has to have an overall philosophy on the types of players and coaches it employs. The Jets have separated the HC from the OC and the HC from the GM in the last couple of hires. It seems to me the GM has to hire the HC and the HC has to be more then a glorified OC or DC to carry out a long range plan.

It also has to impact right through your scouting. BAP may well grade out differently depending on the philosophy and scheme the team plans to run. Having a long range plan should be ingrained across the board in the way the team is managed from the GM down.

I believe Idzik was also using the old scouting department where Bradway still had some influence. The Jets ran cover 2 for years when Bradway was the GM.

Just wondering what site you get these stats. Can't find stats for corners, just receivers.
