http://turnonthejets.com/2014/09/jets-defense-inside-film-room-week-1/ He's playing deep on the majority of the plays on that link. That kid reacts to the ball so freaking quick - the closing speed is AMAZING. This one in particular you know he's playing deep he's no where near the box. I want to start making GIFs myself actually similar to this one.
if dee comes back i think the most likely candidate to go to the bench is pace ... this is the exact type of team that you run the big nickel defense against
AA does have the potential to be as good as Kam but they are pretty different players. As of now Kam is the hardest hitting safety in the league (Pryor may have a say in this before the season is over) and is better playing zone than man. Allen is not the hitter that Kam is but he is a sure tackler with excellent in man coverage ability for a safety. His ability to cover one on one is ahead of his zone coverage abilities at this point of his career.
That is the kind of play I don't think AA could do as well as Pryor playing deep FS. Pryor read, reacted, took the right angle and made the open field tackle in lightning speed.
It's almost a WASTE of potential to have Pryor play exclusive SS because Pryor is better in regards to reacting and reading from the deep safety position. Pryor has done this constantly in the preseason. Pryor also had 2 pass deflections and almost a pick 6. This kid is going to be freaking good. With Allen it's going to be a special safety tandem for the Jets for the next 10 yrs. You can see the Troy Polamalu in his game for sure.
Not sure it's a waste from Pryor's perspective as he has the versatility to be effective at either positions. The waste IMO of playing Pryor exclusive at SS would be of AA's potential as a SS. Like you said we have the potential of having a very special safety tandem, Pryor at SS would put that in jeopardy.
Hmm this sounds interesting. I remember reading an article about the big nickel defense last year. So you basicly sacrifice your ability to set the edge against the run for someone who can cover a TE better? Do we ever use this formation on 3rd and longs ? Seems like it would work for our defense since the D line and ILB's can be trusted to stop the run on their own
Pace is probably the worst starter in the front 7 at setting the edge. If Dee is fully healthy and Rex is ready to have Landry pass the torch of captaining the secondary on to Pryor, I think this would be the perfect game to try to keep our base defense on the field against their all their different personnel groupings short of 4 WR sets. Rex experimented with this last preseason playing AA at the slot. With AA showing that he is more than serviceable on the outside, I think this would be a great plan against the Cheeseheads. I have much more confidence with Walls and AA playing the nickel and CB2 spots or visa versa than I do our nickel package with Wilson.
Pryor is good as FS but he is such a complete Safety that people start to wonder if he better at SS thats usually a good sign
I feel like we get a lot of value for Pace for what we signed him for. I was expecting him to be a backup but he's aged pretty well. Seems for what he's lost in speed and athleticism (which never really wowed me) he has learned to make up for with strong fundamentals and being opportunistic. As soon as he got help from the dline he was able to put up 10 sacks last year like we all expected when we first got him all those years ago. But back to the Big Nickel thing, when would use this formation instead of just replacing Pace with Babin for extra rush. Seems like with all these new rules favoring the receivers, adding more pressure would be more effective than adding more coverage
That's really not true, Allen's talent's lie as a box SS type of DB but he has unusual man coverage ability. Most "prototypical" FS players strengths lie in zone coverages, in fact if you were really comparing Allen and Pryor, Pryor is the one who has skills that lie closer to a "prototypical" FS.
i think its harris. pace sets the edge and funnels plays back inside. harris is a thumper but his tackling wouldn't be missed with allen in that spot. that said, this isn't the game i think we use it, i think against the pats and chargers you will see millner and walls on the outside with AA taking harris's spot and covering gates/gronk
Harris plays every down, I really really doubt he'll be the one they take out. I think they'll play a lot of Wilkerson-Harrison-Richardson-Coples on the front to get after Rodgers. They'll likely keep in Harris and Davis on nearly every snap. I'd imagine that on 3rd and long they'll swap out Harrison, move Wilk in and put Pace on the edge rushing opposite either Coples or Babin. I figure we'll run quite a bit of nickel, although I do have a feeling Allen will be on the outside with Walls coming in for Milliner to give him rest.
i said this wasn't the game we use it.its more of my stud t.e. defense. as far as 3rd down this week. i think we see alot of coples and babin in at the same time however it happens, rexsure has alot of interchangeable parts to disguise his schemes
harris never comes off of the field, that is not happening no matter who we play we dont need pace setting the edge in this game ... lacy/starks (thumpers) and that mediocre o-line will struggle to beat this defense to the outside the packers base offense is three wide, single back ... kyle wilson will not be able to handle cobb in the slot without significant help. with the big nickel, you can bracket cobb with the extra safety and/or have more effective zone coverages
As far as harris, i think that is about to change. I am not sure if he is back next year and we will see a changing of the guard as davis fills a bigger role. Subbing AA in for harris increases team speed in the middle of the field greatly. l As far as this week. Pace is a good stay at home know your assignmnet pass rusher, we will need that to keep rodgers in the pocket and killing us on rollout passes. Should have said contain instead of setting the edge. Of course if millner is on a pitch count we may see the same packages we saw last week
