I'm shocked to see that a few people would actually consider giving up a 1st round pick for Brett Favre. Anyone who would give up a 1st round draft pick for a 38 year old qb at the tail end of his career, is likely suffering from severe delusions. It would be UTTER LUNACY to give the packers a 1st round draft pick for Brett Favre. Common sense, fellas.
A little memory lane. Favre is no Montana but Montana wasn't close to as healthy as Favre when he was dealt. It also wouldn't surprise me if the Chiefs get in this and make it a potential bidding war.
Do you HONESTLY believe that Bringing in a 38 year old Brett Favre gives us a LEGITIMATE chance to win the superbowl next season????? Look, he CLEARLY is a HUGE upgrade over either kellen or noodle arm. But let's try and calm down and be rational for a minute here: In a conference withe the pats, colts, chargers, and jaguars, we would certainly be a playoff team but still a longshot to make it to the superbowl. (I'm not saying it would be impossible, just a LONGSHOT) I think we could be a VERY good team next year with Favre having the kind of season he had last year (A BIG IF, btw), however, I think saying that he would automatically "give us a chance to win the superbowl", is overstating it quite a bit. I'm for the trade DEPENDING on what we have to give up. But let's not make this out to be the heavenly scenario that some on this board are making it out to be.
I hear ya. But let's take a closer look at this. shall we? First of all, Favre is two years older than Montana was when he was traded to the chiefs. (I contend that two full years is significant at this late stage of Brett's career) Secondly, even ignoring what you pointed out (namely, that Montana was better than Favre - very true indeed), Montana was much better suited to play a higher level late in his career. Why?? Because Montana's greatest strength was his uncanny decision making and poise. On the other hand, Favre's greatest weakness is his decision making. And as qbs get older, the one thing that they tend to lose faster than anythig else, is their reaction time and ability to make quick, timely, and intelligent decisions with the ball. (Mainly, decisions involving WHERE TO THROW THE BALL) Favre has always been a 'gunslinger who, even in his prime, was known for making a lot of hasty decisions with the football, and hence, throwing a lot of costly interceptions. What a lot of people seem not recognize on this board is that THERE IS NO GARAUNTEE that Favre is going to have the kind of year he had last year. For the two full seasons prior to last, everyone and their mother was saying that Brett was washed up as his interception totals sky-rocketed. Yes, he had a resurgent season last year. But how is anyone sure that he wil duplicate that again??? Again, the guy is 38!!!!!! And he is very prone to unforced errors as it is. The longer he plays, the better chance there is that he completely loses his ability to make timely and proper decisions with the football in his hands. Don't be shocked if he comes here and has a forgettable 25 tds 23ints or something like that. I want to reiterate that I'm not saying no to the trade. I think, as long as they don't have to give up a first round draft pick, then it is a chance worth taking. All I'm saying is that this is NOT the no-brainer that many people on this board seem to think it is. It is a calculated risk. Now, in my opinion, it is a risk WORTH TAKING IF we only have to give up a 2nd round draft pick to get him. Good point about Montana though. Some people on this board who are against the trade have stated that "no all-time great players ever succeed late in their careers when they are traded to a new team". Joe Montana is great counter example to that because he took the chiefs to within a game of getting to the superbowl. (Although like I said, I think he was very well suited to play well late in his career because of his tremendous decision making)
It's a bit of a slanted poll because the guy who set it up is in favour of the move - from the results, so are most other Jets fans, but the poll would have been more balanced with a 'hell no'...
Montana was unloaded because of a chronic back issue and they felt Young was better at that point. Favre while 2 years older clearly is healthier than Montana was when he was traded to the Chiefs. There is also no way that the Pack are unloading Favre because they think his replacement is better, it's just time to move on. Montana while successful with the Chiefs didn't really lift them. They were a very good team before he arrived and were very good with him and after he left. The Jets have some interesting problems, we stink, we have a young coaching staff that is entirely unproven and were going into a new stadium on the cusp of a huge recession in banking and Wall street, the prime movers in corporate seats both as companies and individuals. The Jets need to make a serious move this year or they risk huge financial losses and embarrasment to their cross town rivals. This is NY and the Jets need to right the ship now. We also appear to have an awful situation at the marquee position in the game. The Jets having Favre and a 10 to 12 win team vs Chad/Clemens and a 6 to 8 win team is huge for the staff, the owner and the league. This probably doesn't happen on the other hand we did land Parcell's which might be the equivlant to landing Favre at least emotionally for the team and fans. While that didn't work out totally, it did right the ship. While there is a lot of optimism for this team, there is also the danger of a young coaching staff getting off to a tough start with a bad QB at the helm. Ships that were perfectly capable of being fixed after a rough start are also serving as reefs all over the ocean. The Jets may well need this move.
There's just no comparison between landing the #1 turnaround guy in the NFL, proven with 4 franchises now, and landing a 38 year old QB. You know what the downside of landing Favre is? He sucks behind the line and under the pressure of playing in NY and/or suddenly shows his true age or gets hurt and we don't see 10 wins again for a half a decade. I understand why Mangini and Tannenbaum might take that risk: any failure this year puts them at huge risk and it doesn't really matter if it a slow organizational failure or a huge one time flop, both of those scenarios have them on the plank and ready to fall into the water if the wind shifts. As a longtime Jet's fan who has only seen a run of competence in team building twice in over 35 years of watching the Jets what I really want is for these guys to prove they can build a team. One shots to save their jobs have no appeal to me at all because that likely just extends my misery at watching the Jets flop again and the upside isn't going to be a super bowl even if they get Favre. He didn't win one last year with Green Bay and Green Bay was a much better team than this one is shaping up to be.
Yeah, imagine what the Vikings would give us for Favre. Especially if we got them in a bidding war against Tampa Bay.
You discount the fact that it was not just Parcells, but an incredible year by Vinny T that carried the team to the AFC finals and our first real shot at the SB since 82. The Jets were not going to be a contender with Parcells and Neil O'Donnel or post shoulder injury Chad Pennington. No Vinny T off the scrap heep and no real SB contention for Parcells. Playoffs, yes but a contender without a highly skilled QB not a chance. This team has as many pieces as the 98 team just not the talent at the QB position or nearly as good a proven coaching staff.
what is ppl gonna say A lil bit yes but w/a catch? ILLOGIC!!!!!!!!! def not progresivo! HELL YEAFS bitch why be al reseverd? 2day evbody gotta pers'vr thro madness. be juictified in NOVERBER
Assume the position... Brett Favre is not our legacy**WHACK**Brett Favre is not our legacy***Whack***
news.teamxbox.com/xbox/17193/Madden-NFL-09-EA-Performs-Simulation-with-Brett-Favre/ I know these things mean NOTHING... but its entertaining. Madden NFL 09 predicts how Brett Favre would perform on a select group of NFL teams... see Jets. Edit: Can't post links yet, just put http:/ / (without space) in front of it in case you didn't figure that out
I'm trying to figure out what our legacy is. On one hand it stinks of desperation, and on the other, It's Brett Favre. Albeit a watered down version of what was once the man of steel. Still better than CP throwing 4 yard completions on 3rd and 8, or Kellen throwing TD passes for the opponent. I have a bad feeling KC isn't the guy. CP, while being the dink and dunk king, should AT LEAST be able to teach KC how to read coverages, and check down. It doesn't seem, thus far, that he's picking it up. It has the smell of "bust" all over it. He'll be playing golf with Patrick Ramsey in two years.
I certainly see your point about KC. There was nothing that definitively put KC as the front runner last year performance-wise. I really need to see how he looks in a couple or pre-season games this year before I start to really worry.
