Yeah...but I bet Hack looks better missing wide open receivers than Sancho & Smith ever did. He's the hope of a new generation. Let us pray.
There is absolutely no comparison between the two in terms of either short term or long term value. Mo is an elite class DT and, at 26 years of age, has many highly productive years ahead of him. You don't win championships without dominant defenses and Mo is a cornerstone to ours. Furthermore, with the departure of Snax to the Giants, we lost the NFL's best nose tackle (mainly against the run) which only places higher value on the importance of holding on to Wilkerson. Just because other teams were willing to sign ridiculously over-inflated contracts to less than truly proven QBs doesn't mean we have to play that same idiotic game. I could maybe justify paying Fitz up to $11 or 12M on a front loaded, short term deal but the money he wants is both insane and unwarranted. He's a solid game manager at best but is painfully inconsistent. It's so easy to see him as a savior or better than he is because we've endured so much misery and suffering from the QB position for so long now. We can't mortgage our present and future competitiveness by choosing an aging marginal and historically erratic offensive journeyman over a young, firmly established elite class defensive player.
As a fan, you have every right to be pissed about that pick. But this thread is about playing GM, and a GM who follows that line of thinking (i.e. assigning greater value to a play because it happened in a big moment) won't produce very good results in the NFL. For example, would I lower my grade on Russell Wilson because he threw the most anti-clutch pick in NFL history?
Wilson got a ring. Fitz has never been to the playoffs. Everybody use to say Manning choked in playoffs until he won a SB. Fitz has a history of choking when the game is on the line.
Yeah I don't know all that much about Fitz's career besides the overall view but last year he was pretty terrible in do or die situations....If we were in a hole it was over I hate having to take this stance because I like Fitz's toughness and he couldn't have been a better teammate but he's just not good. His arm is shot, he takes unnecessary and crazy chances both running and throwing, and he cannot lead a comeback from what I can tell He's a great backup but you just aren't winning with him as your QB....Time to see the other guys even if you think they might be worse
sometimes it's best to just admit you were wrong and move on. people tend to have a lot more respect for that.
Sorry, but IMO that just isn't realistic. The Jets (two different GMs) have been trying to re-sign Mo for 3 years and they're still not even close. It's not gonna happen. We either trade Mo and get something positive or we lose him for a 3rd round compensatory pick. Cut Breno - sure Sign Fitz - great if he'll come to his senses and sign for what the Jets are offering him. If not, move on once TC starts.
It's more of the fact that I've seen enough to know that Geno won't even be a mediocre quarterback in this league. We saw a much larger improvement in Sanchez from year 1 to year 2. We saw limited improvement in Geno, but the disheartening thing about is, is we saw the same horrible situational football. I'm just not willing to hedge my bet on someone who looks everything the part of a bad player. I don't think this front office, coach, or locker room are willing to that either.
There's no question that Mo is the better player, but as you say, Fitz can make a bigger difference in how the team plays this year. As for the window for trading Mo being closed, I'm not so certain. The Jets could still possibly trade him for a player(s) and/or future picks, although that's not very likely. I also don't see the odds at 50-50 that he re-signs here. Two different GMs have tried to re-sign Mo over 3 years and they're still not even close. I'd say there's less than a 10% chance that he re-signs here, maybe even less than a 5% chance. I do think that you're spot on about the majority fans that didn't want to trade Mo this offseason turning on Mac and/or Mo once he leaves, and that the writing on the wall for Mo leaving appeared when the Jets drafted Williams.
I'm making a very specific point about not overvaluing any particular play. Rings have nothing to do with it.
IMO this would be a terrible way of going about it. The last thing we can afford is to lose two starters and depth on the OL. Giacomini and Folk may be goners anyway, but I would be shocked if either happened before TC ended, and Folk is less likely to be gone than Giacomini. Winters isn't going anywhere, nor should he, unless two of the young OGs play lights out in TC. Geno isn't going anywhere unless Fitz has agreed to terms and the Jets feel comfortable with playing either Petty or Hack if Fitz were to go down with injury. I'm totally surprised that Stacy is still here. I don't understand that at all. Ijalana shouldn't go anywhere. He could very well wind up starting at LT this season. I don't know anything about Ross, but since he's a vet and the Jets signed him this offseason, I'd be surprised if he went anywhere before TC ended.
I understand that but if a person has a history of doing it. Can we really trust Fitz is my main problem with him?
