Maybe, but none of us really know where we are against the cap. We didn't HAVE to be under the cap until Thursday. It could be that we planned to get Harris's deal done and fit under before Thursday. None of us really has any idea. He may have felt it was necessary in order to get everyone signed. If that's the case, we may not have 6.4 million available. We may be just under the cap at this point.

Hypothetically, if we give up a 1st round pick for Osi Umenyiora I will go hypothetically apeshit, hypothetically speaking of course...

Just from what I am seeing about how the contract is structured basically shows that Tanny is willing to backload this contract and worry about the cap in the future in order to free up as much possible space for this year. Six million + is a large chunk of change to free up "needlessly" in structuring a contract.

That's likely, but none of the deals had to fit under the cap until Thursday. Harris may have been the deal he'd use to fit everyone else in. We'll know when we see what they do over the next few days and when the details of the contracts come out.

stop whining ... tanny has until the end of the year to use the cap space. if he doesnt get who he wants, then he can adjust accordingly

How could you know that without knowing exactly where we are on the cap for this season? It's not needless to free up six million if we were six million over the cap going into today. Teams can sign whatever contracts they want as long as they fit under the cap on Thursday.

Again, yes, it seems likely on the surface that he's trying to free up as much space as possible for this season. That's not the only explanation, though.

Every NYJ fan should go apeshit if we give up a first rounder for him.

Tanny is planning to do something that will make all of our balls drop several inches.

I'm hoping this deal was loaded at the ends. Pay him as much as possible now and in 2015(16? I'm too tired to count) that way we have room to maneuver for the next two years and force a restructure in/before the final year.

This is probably pretty close (it usually is) to how we started the day.

    I love the signing.
Really don't understand back loading these deals when so much guaranteed money is on the line though.
We have 9 guys set to make a lot of lettuce against the 2012 cap.

It wasn't. The cap hit this year is tiny. With how much guaranteed money he received, the structure wouldn't have made much of a difference as far as maneuvering is concerned anyway. He'll average 10.5 million in cap hits every year after this one and he'll see every year.
