That, to me, has always been one of the few flaws with Rex's defenses. He needs players that fit his system and tries to force square pegs in to round holes rather than adjusting his system to match the skills of the players he has. This, coincidently, isn't an issue with Bowles who adjusts his system to fit the players on the roster to get the most out of them.
People forget we found Mauldin in the 3rd last year....who's to say we can't find someone just as good or better on the other side in the 2nd or 3rd?
To be fair they are probably grading the Lee as a potential starter in our base defense. Maybe they would grade him higher if they knew that he would be our MB (Money Backer). I don't care what Bowles say Lee was drafted specifically for the contributions he can provide immediately in sub packages. Kyle Wilson was a sub package pick so was Devin Smith. I prefer to draft starters who based on depth may have to contribute early in sub packages before they take on the starting role. Mauldin is a good example.
Im not saying youre wrong. I dont love or hate the pick. Its meh pick. I think he can be an effective player. Vilma was until injuries took their toll. Superstar...... No youre definitely right about that, the will not be one. Cant be worse than Davis tho can he? Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Lee must be our answer for Gronk.... Lets hope it woks. He's got good wheels and ball skills it's just hard to get over that we passed on a better version of that type of player in Jack
you must be confusing Rex with Mangini. Rex runs hybrid defenses with a broad range of packages, which often change week to week. he is very similar to Bowles in that regard. no coincidence both teams were high on Lee..
Bowles can play Lee to his strengths and won't get hung up because he plays a particular scheme is my point. Coples was an abject failure and Bowles clearly knew he was on his way out the door so he had to try anything to see if he could salvage some production out of him. Two totally different players and examples.
Hearing Bowles talk about Lee in different schemes has me warming up to the pick a little. I also agree with other posters that against teams like NE, he'll probably be a much bigger part of the game plan than in other weeks. My main hesitation is that in the first round, i want a guy who can play any scheme, match up well against any type of opponent, and maybe even play multiple positions/techniques. Wilkerson was one of the only times i actually got a player i desperately wanted, and that was the main reason why. With Lee, we are already talking about situations where he can be effective, which just doesn't ring as great value this high. I trust Bowles instincts on D, and i get that the game is evolving, so we'll see how this plays out. Just being more of a traditionalist, i would've preferred a fast coverage backer as a middle round type selection. in the first round, i like more of a lock to be a 3 or even 4 down player.
Yeah, it's pitiful. It's all about them, that's why. Then they can say I told you so. "I know why we suck". But if we drafted a sexy guy like Jack they'd tell tell you it was the pick, BUT it's a gamble, and they'd second guess the pick anyway. No consideration of the vision looking forward either of the guy. . Just a snap shot in time of the player and another guy they know is better, based on media information on their pc, please. And some of the shit is downright ridiculous stupid
That's completely false. The physical strength for males peaks at around age 30, although quickness peaks several years before that, closer to 27. The widely accepted fact is that male athletes are still growing and getting bigger and stronger well past 25, which is why (along with the strength and conditioning program), virtually every NFL player packs on size and muscle after college.
Double replying to this because after the initial post I had additional thoughts. By bringing up Mangini you actually reinforce my position, Rex didn't adjust his defensive philosophy to match the players on his roster as given by the GM but rather tried to fit the players given to him in to his system. Coples is a good example of a player that Rex tried to force in to a role that fit his defense rather than adjusting the system to fit the players on the roster. Not saying Coples would have been a good player, but he was put in to a role he had no real chance of excelling at.
people complain about slow lb core , people draft the fastest LB in the draft , WTF he is only 220 xd
ok, in 2009 we were by far the best D in the league after being utterly mediocre with Mangini. and that's with similar personnel being used differently, so not sure i get that example at all. Rex was the anti-Mangini in terms of defensive flexibility when he got here. how quickly people forget. the Coples example i don't get at all either. Coples was just a bad first round draft pick. some of that decision to draft him may fall on Rex, sure. but once drafted, what position should Rex have been playing Coples? What did Bowles do that was any different with him?
To me it looks like he can actually tackle one on one in the backfield. Idc what anyone says. We aren't a good tackling team behind the LoS.
