No style points for Zach? I'll add this... good mechanics helps the receivers. Nobody wants to catch a brick. Give them a catch-able ball and everybody's happy.
All the scouts and analysts, even ones that aren't a huge fan of Zach's, have raved about his arm talent. He has arm strength, he's a loose and natural thrower of the football. Also having an extremely quick release. If you compare him to Trevor Lawrence, Zach has a much more compact and quick release. This makes it harder on defenses to break on the ball.
Gee wiz can we just wait until the kid has taken a few snaps in a real NFL game before we bring this up????????
Yeah but Peyton prob had the highest football IQ of any QB ever. He succeeded despite not having a great arm/tight spiral.
Hey... a little wobble on the ball can be a good thing. I never said a perfect spiral was important. What I have said was that velocity and the shape of the ball when it gets to the receiver was paramount. There's a reason scouts & coaches get giddy over a QB with a quick fluid release. It's not the end all be all... but it helps...
It is. Fitzpatrick, Jimmy G., Dalton, Tua, Foles, Haskins to name a few all get the ball out fast. I doubt anyone here is dying to have them run their team.
Care to name all the QB's with a slow release that also sucked? The lost is long. A quick release is not important to you because the guy you wanted has a release as slow as molasses in January and the guy the Jets picked has a release like Marino. #facts Stop stalking me.
I just had a chilling thought... What if Zach Wilson is our Jeff George? I hate myself for even thinking that...
Why would you think that? Because you are a beaten down Jets fan? I see know reason to think that. And George was the #1 overall pick. In case you missed it that honor goes to Lawrence. Maybe he's Jacksonville's Jeff George.
By itself - like most traits - it doesn't guarantee success or failure, but a quick release can be a big difference maker. You can make up for not having one by having an exceptional ability to read the defense and make quick decisions, but a QB who has a quick release and can make quick decisions, is well on his way to becoming great. The one physical trait that most great QBs have is an elite arm. Again, it doesn't guarantee greatness or even success, but an elite arm is something that can't be taught. A quick release really can't be taught either, but as I mentioned above, you can somewhat overcome a less-than-quick release by having an exceptional sense of the game - again, a trait that isn't easily taught. To put this all in current terms, I'd say Mahomes, Rodgers, and Russell Wilson have all three traits at an elite level. It's too early from me to judge whether Zach has all three but he's close - his play in actual NFL games will reveal this to be true or not. For now, I believe he has all three but to a lesser degree than those other guys, which would put him in the upper echelon of QBs. But I'm no expert, just a guy who has been watching QBs for almost 60 years.
For a guy who has been watching QBs for less 10 years, I think it’s overrated particularly in the modern NFL. However, I respect your opinion.
