I was too. I was wrong. I thought that he would get killed running the ball so much and while he had a strong arm, I didn't think he was all that accurate or good in reading defenses. If he had come here, I would probably have been right. He was fortunate enough to get drafted by a team that knew how to build their offense on his strengths.
Yeah and to be honest, people missing on Allen isn't something to kick themselves over. It's really rare for a QB to improve his accuracy as much as Allen has. This year is a total anomaly, there's almost no precedent for a guy going from least accurate in the league to a top QB.
haha ok so I proved you wrong and now youre on to your next point? thats fine. Every QB coming out of college has to work on decision making and reading NFL defenses. Fields has not shown any extra inability in these areas than other college prospects.
Are you not at all concerned about the Ohio State system making it exceedingly easy on their QB's? What's the difference between Fields and Haskins? They operated under the same Ohio State offense, no? Haskins put up monster numbers there too.
Right now I think the Coaching staff decision will have more impact than the QB decision. Any young QB, including Lawrence, would've failed with this CS and roster. For that reason, I'm more in favor of keeping Darnold, obviously hire the right coach, and work on improving the roster before making another big QB move (if even needed). All of which should've been the focus of last offseason.... but here we are again.
Trade down!! Get more assets. If one of Fields or Wilson are still there then you can consider them. I don't see the point of forcing ourselves into over draft a QB.. build a solid core!
Off the top of my head I'd say of the current NFL starters probably Phil Rivers and ironically Darnold were probably considered the most "can't miss" guys weren't they? Maybe Stafford I guess. Nobody really thought he'd "miss" and he didn't. Most all the other top guys, Wilson, Rodgers, Mahomes, Watson.... all of them had pretty big ? or at least a significant minority that didn't like their prospects to really succeed in the NFL.
Flat out incorrect. He had terrible WRs... Allen was dropping dimes on the run just like he does now... check out you tube and you’ll see..
Wilson doesn't have to be NFL ready. Mahomes sat for a year. Wilson could sit for a year or two, if need be. It's about talent and potential, and for their long term contributions, not year 1, day 1.
It is a very strange case. Along with his entire story. Going from a zero star recruit begging for a D1 shot all the way to going to Wyoming and then dazzling in year one as a starter and struggling in year two and then into the top 5 MVP voting in the NFL after the way his career started. There is no precedent but the quarterback position is also changing rapidly. Athletes are surviving because of their legs and fixing their arms as they mature. It's something to look at and the reason I'm so high on Fields.
He was also air mailing throws by ten yards with the Bills and threw an incredible amount of dirtballs at Wyoming. His transformation is a bit unbelievable.
I watched plenty. He was horribly inaccurate. The numbers said so too, so much so that the people at PFF thought he was unfixable. I don't take them as gospel obviously, but hard numbers that say a throw is off target, uncatchable, or turnover-worthy are inarguable. He's improved significantly. Even in the NFL, he was woefully unaccurate the past few years
I agree with you, but most #2 picks (or Top 10 picks) don't usually sit for a year or more. The NFL has really changed with respects to QBs. Prior to probably the P. Manning era most QBs sat for 2,3, even 4 years. Steve Young sat behind Montana for 5 years! But with the way the rookie contracts and salary cap works, now a top rated QB draftee is expected to start after a year at the latest. I really don't see Douglas taking Wilson because he'd have to take him with the first pick in all probability and then he wouldn't be contributing right away. It's disappointing if it comes to that because I really like Wilson, but I don't think JD is even really looking at drafting a QB this year.
FJF didn't say that Daboll rebuilt Allen. RIF He said that Daboll did with Allen what we needed to do with Sam (i.e., coach him, fix his mechanics, fundamentals, and help him refine his talent), plus he built a system around Allen rather than tried to shoehorn Sam into a system in which he didn't fit.
He also threw dimes on the money at Wyoming and his receivers dropped a lot of balls. Now he has Diggs.
