They wouldn't transform our offense if we didn't have a quality QB. You still have a topnotch QB and Sam isn't that right now, nor would he be in 2021 with the Jets, even with Smith or Pitts. You really need to learn the game better and understand the importance of the QB position.
It's fun to dream about something like that, but I doubt it would happen, and imo shouldn't happen. We need to take a QB at #2. If we can trade Darnold for a #1 great. 5 #1 picks will be enough.
Last page you said that picking Smith at #2 while keeping Darnold another year would be a waste of the #2 pick. Like a potential HOF WR would be wasted if his rookie year was with Darnold. In reality he would make Darnold and our offense look 5X better. Over rating the QB position is not an example of understanding of it.
1) QB is single most important position in all of sports 2) This is not the last year QBs will be draft available 3) Jimmy Fucking Grappollo took this offense to the Super Bowl 4) whomever is the QB, it’s probably a good idea to load up with as many top notch prospects as possible. 5) Reaching and yes Field, Wilson, Lance are reaches (especially when the rest of your team sucks). Then after you reach your stuck with that shit for at least 3 years (Darnold ring a bell?) it’s the ridiculous reason this team passed on Mamhomes, Watson because that stud Hackenberg was waiting in the wings. Fuck I hate this team. Set your team and qb up for success. It’s amazing to me people don’t see this. Absolutely do not take a QB at 2. Trade the fuck back.
There aren't many great WR's that have terrible QB's throwing to them. McLaurin is probably the only one I can think of from this last season. The rest of the top WR's had at least decent QB's throwing to them. I think it's safe to say QB's make WR's look good more than the other way around.
Jimmy G is actually an argument against your point. The 49ers have one of the top offensive minds in football coaching them and lots of talent on offense and they still couldn't get it done because Jimmy G wasn't good enough. And Jimmy G is significantly better than Darnold. Fields and Wilson are not reaches at #2. Both are two of the more highly rated QB prospects from the last few years.
Nah....no worries. Enjoy looking at it from all points of view. We're moving forward no matter what JD does.....Watson, Wilson, Trevor, Zack, Fields, Sam, yada yada. Just comes down to which option gets us there first. There's legit pros/cons for any path forward. No single option is clearly the best above all else. Every option comes potential along with rabbit holes and pitfalls. I try not to be a homer and zero in on just one option and JD should get fired if he strays from my chosen path.
The funny thing is that we have a perfect comparison as well: Robby Anderson. He played a year before Sam, two years with Sam under two different coaches, and a year after Sam with Teddy. Results are that he did much better with other QBs, including 1111 year last year. That's the same guy couldn't get to 800 with Sam under two different systems, but was at 950 before as a second year player ready to break out, and 1111 after. Look at Perriman too who did better with Flacco than with Sam on the same team. At some point we have to face the reality, and that is we need an upgrade at QB for WRs to succeed as well.
What would you prefer for the next 5 seasons....Patrick Mahomes under center -or- the entire Tampa Bay Defense with Todd Bowles as DC?
A top 5 QB who will give his team a shot to reach the Super Bowl every year or a good defense that could regress over time.
I'm sure KC was happy to get to the SB with perhaps the best QB the NFL has seen in a generation. Too bad he ran into a buzzsaw defense that made him look worse than Sam! Even though Tampa has Brady who at 43 is still an above avg QB, I think Tampa is perfectly happy with their Defense. KC can keep Mahomes, they'll keep their D just fine!
Mahomes without question. He's on track to be one of the best QB's of all time. It's also a pretty easy to retain a QB for 15 years. Very hard to retain an entire defense for that long.
You've gotta stop with this. Mahomes, despite being under fire the entire game, still put up more yards than Sam ever did in any game this season.
1) I've been saying this for a long time. 2) No it isn't, but this is the time to get the new QB. We are perfectly positioned to do so and don't have to burn draft capital to move up and take a QB. It's a great draft for QBs. Anything else ignores our own recent draft history of passing on Watson and Mahomes and then trading up for Sam, is wasteful of draft capital, and is ignorant of the realities of this draft class vs next year's draft class for QBs. Trading up or getting a QB in a draft with fewer and lesser quality QBs is not as easy as some of you portrary it, nor is it wise. 3) No, Garappolo didn't take the Niners to the SB. Their defense and rushing attack did. Garappolo got carried, not as much as Sanchez was, but he didn't take them to the SB. 4) I have no disagreement here, but we still have a lot of other picks this year, a ton of cap space and will have 8-9 draft picks next year and our full complement of draft picks in 2023 I believe, although we may be minus a 4th round pick in 2023. Taking a QB at #2 this year doesn't preclude the Jets from building around that QB. To suggest otherwise is flat out wrong. 5) No, the hell Field and Wilson are not reaches. You don't have a damn clue what you're talking about. That much is obvious if you think they are reaches. You lose all credibility regarding QBs with that stupid statement. You have it backwards. You set your team up for success by getting the QB when you have the chance (if you're lucky enough to have the opportunity), and then you build around him. When you don't have the opportunity to get the QB, then you're forced to have to build the team first, and then hope you get lucky enough to get a chance to get a QB. Once your team is built you're drafting much lower and you don't have a realistic chance of drafting a topnotch QB. You're stuck with hoping 2nd and 3rd tier QBs can get it done, or you're recycling JAG veteran QBs. What's amazing is that you guys are so dense that you can't see that. You all have attitudes like oh, trading up is easy or any QB will do. That's totally ridiculous and shows that you have zero understanding of how it works in the NFL. GM careers are made or lost by getting a QB. When they fail, they don't last long. Even if they get a mediocre one, they may not last long. The GMs with the most longevity have drafted topnotch FQBs. Passing on prospects like Fields, Wilson and Lance would be totally stupid. No GM would do that.
ROFLMAO! Mahomes looked worse than Sam. Right! SMH Sam can only dream about making some of the throws that Mahomes made.
Idk if you can guarantee they'd be better than Sam, but you can guarantee they will be in a much better situation to succeed in. I personally dont think many QBs if any would have success with the coaching and personnel we had. However JD has the team heading in the right direction and would like to see Sam with some real WRs and Rbs. Also Watson leaving Houston whether it's the management or bad team doesnt help us. We have the Johnsons running the show and had a worse record than Houston, so idk how that would help Watson stay. Dont get me wrong, I'd be very happy to land Watson but at the right price
I agree. The throw was difficult and questionable. However the pass was about as good as you can make. Most of the issues we are seeing is from the QBs internal clock. Sam is obviously so used to being pressured he starts rushing and at times not waiting for the plays to progress, and at times will try to escape the pocket. All I'm saying with Sam is that he has all the tools to succeed, and the Jets have yet to put him in situation to succeed. We had Hogan and L Cager start games for us smh! That is not a winning situation.
Regarding the bold - as others here have said, we had receivers open at a pretty good rate this season. We also had among the lowest drop % among our receivers. The main problem was that Sam either didn't see open guys or missed them when he did try to throw to them.
Smart post, I’m done with Darnold personally but do think the NFL sees the same things you say + why teams are reaching out to the Jets. Will be interesting to see what the Jets get back in trade. You don’t give up a 1st rounder (or even a 2nd) for a guy with no talent in his final year...
