There are a number of reasons for this sort of thing.
No team wants to use starters beyond a series in the final preseason game. Most teams also want to avoid using 2nd-string players as much as possible for the final preseason game. Third-string guys, bubble players, players who will be suspended early in the season (see Calvin Pace and Michael Vick for 2009 examples) and obvious final cuts? Those guys are the ones who see significant action in the final preseason game.

Last year Jesse Chatman had an absurd number of carries and receptions against the Eagles. I attended that game in Philadelphia and was shocked at how much playing time Chatman received that night. Going into that game he seemed a lock to make the team. Something had to be up. Well, the next day it was announced that he would be suspended for the first four games.

    Really!!!

Woodhead is a great underdog story, but he's not an NFL RB. The Pats have enough RBs and Belichicken knows a True NFL player.

Think of it as an audition. They didn't keep extra depth at LB, so one of those DBs will be gone when Pace returns.

Ahh, a Paul Frase reference. He was an okay defensive lineman, nothing more.

Bingo - I guess Rex threw him a bone , by having him make the team . It sure didn't make any sense that he was gonna stick

You can't because if you wait a week , we wouldn't have been able to claim the players we did today , who actually fit real needs on the team.

I think they are taking a shot and hoping no one claims him.

If he had no shot at making the team, then the Jets shouldn't have given him ANY reps and told him "Sorry but you're too small...." Have a nice day.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

Sorry Danny. I hope you go to the Jets practice squad. I would love for you to remain a Jet, but I have a strange feeling that's not going to happen. Maybe Cleveland?

Oh yeah...good old # 91. Interesting bit of trivia about Frase.... he is or at least was the only player to ever receive the Ed Block Courage Award twice. His son has myotubular myopathy and Paul started a charity to help raise awareness and help find a cure to this deadly disease....

NY Jets twitter: EA: To make room for Woodhead, the Jets released FB Jehuu Caulcrick from the PS.

This Jets ordeal is becoming like Hamlet: "I can't decide!"

Woodhead will be so confused by the time this is over, he'll show up in his HS uniform at the practice facility.

well it makes sense we wanted to wait and see if Danny was offered a spot on a 53-man roster somewhere in the NFL, and when nobody claimed him off of waivers, we decided to put him on our Practice Squad.

Damn I really liked Jehuu and thought he would step in next year and become the starter. Now we are wasting a spot on Woodhead
