"Don't forget Russell Maryland was touted the same way coming out of college"

Last I checked, Russell Maryland was part of a D Line that anchored Dallas to a couple of Super Bowls. He also made a few trips to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.

You can't compare Wilkinson to Russell Maryland. Russell's career would have been longer if he kept himself healthy and at a reasonable playing weight. Also Jimmy Johnson was Russell's coach for almost a decade going back to the U. When Johnson left Dallas, Russell left too and not having Johnson anymore really was a negative for Russell's career.

Yet Maryland still had a good career with some great seasons in there.
Wilkinson never even had an above average season, let alone a career.

Yes I know but cause he was a more current player & since someone started a thread about him I thought I would just point out to all who can read & comprehend that being a #1 does not guarantee stardom. The same result could come to Man & Fergy even though some here think they are sure HOFers already

H'mm I would have to go with Columbus cause he was the first right & is the easy choice.

That is where you are wrong Champ. I dont recall anyone stating that either of them are surefire HOF's. They are what they are, which are 2 talented college players who were ranked as the top players at their positions which just happened to be the positions that the Jets were extremely weak at.
All that can be done is to play them and see if they are as advertised or not. That cant be done until some games are played.
You are right, getting picked early doesnt guarantee a successful career but it also doesnt guarantee them becoming total duds.

OK I refer you to Powell/Ward & Cadigan who supposely were all "book end" OLman also. Also, I refer you to what ESPN said about Fergy handling a speed rusher with video to back up there allegation. In Man case most say he is to small so while we took the best it sounds like they are not the best of breed. As you say & I agree we will see what we will see when the gun goes off for game 1 & they are now playing man not boys FB if they even crack the starting lineup

    I like de Soto.

de Soto?! What did he do?

    He discovered the Mississippi.

Oh, like they wouldn't have found THAT eventually.

Can we please stop talking about all these washed up scrubs? Our NT situation is not nearly as bad as some make it seem. We will be fine with DRob, Pouha, and Pope.

I think you have a very rosy attitude to a very difficult spot for the NYJs & MHO is you are way, way, way over estimating all 3 of the players you mentioned

How so? I think a rotation of these three players at NT, with DRob taking the majority can be quite successful. They all have the size, and under a new system they should be able to bring up their level of play. You don't need a star NT to be successful in this league, you just need people to take up blocks.

how about the guy our country was named after...Amerigo Vespucci

  15. What was wrong w/ Powell? I understand what you're saying but Powell isn't a good example as he made many pro bowls and IMO is an all time Jet.

If DRob can't get it done as a DT in the 4-3, how's he going to handle taking on the 3-4 as a NT???.....He's big, but he's not THAT BIG. I doubt he'd be able to handle playing NT. Just my opinion.....

The thing is that he did get it done in the 4-3. The problem is that people's expectations of him are so high because he was a #4 pick. If he was originally a second or third round pick, no way would he recieve as much hate as he does.
