Per Albert Breer today - July 6

"I think there's a good chance Cook becomes a Jet, and my sense is it's a team he'd like to go to. He makes sense for them, too -
getting him would allow them to be judicious bringing Breece Hall back."

I'm torn on what I think the Jets should do regarding the RB position. I think there's a very good chance that Hall could be a repeat of Adrian Peterson following his injury, starting day one and have a great season. With Hall and their other RBs, there's no need to bring in a vet, but I understand the Jets taking a cautious, more conservative approach. On one hand, I think that Knight, Carter, Abanikanda and Dye deserve the chance to show what they can do in TC, and with a better OL, offensive scheme, better and less predictable play calling, the Jets could be just fine at RB. OTOH, they may not be good enough to get us where we need to be. Abanikanda is a rookie. It will take him some time to learn the offense, adjust to the speed of the NFL, and work on his pass protection blocking. With Carter the issue could wind up being more than just a sophomore slump, and Knight may not be as good as I think he is. If the Jets are seriously entertaining the idea of bringing in a vet, sooner is better than later. Whether it would be Cook or Fournette, either will have to learn the new scheme and develop timing and chemistry with Rodgers and the OL. If Hall is questionable then they need to make sure that the veteran RB they sign will be ready to go day one at a high level, not still adapting to the scheme and developing timing.

I am concerned about the cap, but more about play on the field. If Cook has declined as much as some say he has, then I don't think I want him at any price. I think Fournette has probably declined less, would provide something the Jets don't have (a power back), and would probably be cheaper than Cook. He's also a great receiver out of the backfield and probably a better blocker in pass protection than Cook. If the Jets do sign a veteran RB, I hope that it's Fournette, but guess I will hope for the best if it's Cook. I definitely don't want Hunt.

I hadn’t thought of Fournette but you make a good point about him bringing something we don’t really have as a power back…I like that.

To me, it all depends on Hall…for most players, it takes a year to get back to form, and I also am pretty good with our other backs…not sure if MC will bounce back or not, but if he plays like last year, that’s not good at all…he looked slow and indecisive and I wouldn’t want that version of MC having to start a lot of games

If the Joe Douglas doesn't sign Cook or Fournette or Elliott, who are we relying on for the short yardage plays to pick up 1st downs?

The Key thing is the Jets need to have Breece Hall firing on all cylinders down the stretch and beyond.

Another veteran back is essential to run the ball efficiently and take the pressure off of Hall rushing back too soon.

Cook, Fournette or Hunt would be super clutch signings.

Yeah... it'd be nice to have a heavier running back for those scenarios.

Breece is the only back on the roster that weighs more than Zach...

Lest anyone wonder why he’s constantly liking Jets stuff… it’s a leverage play. I’m fine being used as leverage against the Dolphins who already have a shit cap situation and few picks. Also that means JD is properly valuing Cook financially.

Not thrilled with the idea of him joining Miami but to me he's not the kind of player you sign just to keep him away from a rival. I think it will all come down to how the Jets feel about Hall's recovery. Also, if the OL stays healthy Carter and Knight should look better than last year.

I was really expecting them to sign somebody right after the Ty Johnson thing, he was the only banger on the roster. I liked Fournette early but his injuries are pretty much expected at this point.

My gut says they want to go thru the early part of camp and see what they have and how healthy/ready every one is before they pull the plug on a bruiser. Could we use the full back more for very short yardage?

Just for kicks and giggles, and certainly dont want to create a new thread for this. But I have been hearing some faint rumors in Las Vegas that the Jets as an alternative to Cook might have as a long shot a proposal to trade the Raiders a second round pick for Jacobs, if Hall situation in training camp does not look like what they are hoping for. Most likely BS from media folks looking for clicks but why would they pick the Jets as the most likely candidate.
Not sure Joe would consider a second round pick but what do I know.

As of right now the Jets 2024 second rounder belongs to the Packers until Rogers meets the snap minimum and it becomes a first.

I don't think there's any way that Joe would consider trading a 2nd round pick for Jacobs under any circumstances. We have a ton of FAs next year. I doubt that Woods and Jefferson will be back, so we'll have a need at DT. Mosely may be gone, and unless Sherwood proves this season he's equal to the task, we may be looking for a new MLB. Unless we sign Kwon to a 2-3 deal, we'll probably be looking for another LB. Whitehead may not be back if he doesn't have a better season this year, and I think Chuck Clark will be a FA, and I doubt that Amos will be back, so we could be looking for 2 new starting safeties. Brown probably won't be back and Becton may not either. Joe is going to need every draft pick he can get next season, and he's already down the Jets' 2nd and 6th round picks, and that 2nd will probably turn into the Jets' 1st round pick, so he's really going to have to earn his money next year.

Great points. I’m hoping than Becton plays lights out and gets resigned, but a lot of moving pieces for next year. I definitely see Brown, CJ and Wood moving on after this season as a minimum. LB and safety will definitely be early targets in the draft. May be one big free agency splash depending on how we do this year in the playoff race.

I wouldn't count on any big spending sprees or splashes in FA. In addition to having FA, the cap is going to be pretty tight with Q's and Rodgers' cap hits, plus several other players who spread some of their money into next year so we'd have more cap space this year.
