Absolutely 100% agree, and I am very disappointed in the three years Mangini was here, he did not do this.
You don't get it do you? Since he doesn't have 12 sucks he must suck, right? He's been playing 3-4 defensive end for the last 3 seasons. His job is to occupy two gaps and give the linebackers room to make plays. It's not an easy position to fill. Ellis has been consistent, he rarely gets hurt, he does his job very well. He may be overpaid based on his original contract but if they cut him he will be picked up quickly by any number of teams. I don't see any players in the draft that would be able to replace him and good 3-4 ends rarely make it to free agency. What is this less then stellar performance you are talking about?
Chris Canty is looking for Tommy Kelly money. He's not a realistic option unless we cut half of the o-line.
Eaxctly. The durability aspect is a good catch - it's not like he's some old bum with bad legs coming off IR.
What do you think the chances of getting the number for his ganja hook are, before we let him go? I'm dry.
Who said he sucks? I think Ellis does his job, however I do not think he is worth his current salary. I'm all for reworking his contract - but if he can't come to terms then I am also all for giving him his walking papers. This is about the TEAM, and having the money to upgrade other areas of the team, and at 32 years old and certainly on the downhill side of his career, Ellis should be all for that. Personally, I find the argument about the 3-4 defensive ends a bit moot because in a good 3-4 scheme you should be rushing at least 4 guys on every snap anyway. But that's another discussion for another day.
Ellis is a good DE. Nothing special. He isnt a feared pass rusher. The Jets need to upgrade at that posistion. I like Ellis and would like him to stick around but they need another DE that can get after the QB (yes I know the DE's job in a 3-4 isnt just about sacking the QB).
A DE's job in a 3-4 is barely about sacking the QB. Richard Seymour tallied 52 tackles and 8 sacks last season with 0 forced fumbles, he's making roughly $6million in 2009. Ellis had 60 tackles 8 sacks and 2 forced fumbles with a cap $6.9 million. His production is right up there with one of the top 3-4 ends in the league and is getting paid only $1million more. As far as the market goes he's producing like he should and getting paid like he should. How many more sacks do you need at this position?
I don't understand all the hate for ellis on this board, he has been our best the last few seasons and always gets the job done
Good posting. I might add that ELLIS WAS THE MOST PRODUCTIVE 3-4 DE IN THE NFL IN 2008 Jets fans remain some of the most clueless fans in the world of football. They don't care what scheme there is, half of them couldn't begin to describe the difference between a two gap defensive front and a single gap scheme.
Sign Igor Olshanksy. Good run-stopper, enough strength to bullrush his way into the pocket. Most likely cheaper than Canty.
