what's this about Marino being a pothead? I understand therer's a lot of debate about the top 3 QBs this year and how good they may or may not be, but for my money, give me a guy who has shown his skills rather than a guy who you have to project into the NFL. i.e.: Cutler over Young. Yes, I know Young has had success while Cutler has not, but no QB has ever had success in the NFL doing the thing that Young did in college.
Exactly, and like i've said many times before, young has never been in a pro system where he has to make presnap reads and adjustments
Mayock is a pretty smart guy. Ex-NFL DB. Go to the NFL.com site.... he and Corey Chavous go over their top 3 QB's in the draft. Chavous has no clue, but Mayock has studied the tapes from NINE of Vanderbuilt's game tapes from 2005. Someone tell me they know Cutler's strong and weak points better than this guy. I've been saying for a long time now that Cutler will be the best NFL QB from this draft, and I actually think he has the potential to be a great one. If you don't know who Mike Mayock is....... maybe you don't know who Cutler is, either.
Yeah.... wierd pick by him.... and no Lienart in his top three. I am tempted to say something else about Chavous' rankings, but it would not be PC.
i totally agree. actually, i think Vince Young is more of a gamble than Jay Cutler. With Vince Young, you get a guy whose successful college skills may not translate well to the NFL. The option/play-fake option/scrambling just doesn't work at the next level. Furthermore, we better have a good back-up ready to play if we get Young because look no further than Michael Vick; he uses his speed and scrambling and winds up getting injured each season which will only shorten his shelf-life. And Vick is stockier than Young, so expect a skinny VinceYoung to miss several games. By no means am I saying that Cutler is a sure-shot. But if I'm gonna gamble on a QB, I'd rather gamble on the purer pocket-passer with a rifle arm, who made his horrendous team competitve in a strong SEC Conference. cheers
I think both have great upsides and a certain amount of risk to their game. W/ Vince you have a guy you can build a pretty creative playbook around, who is a double threat, very mature and can put people in the seats. But he will need time to grasp an NFL playbook, alil work on his release, and will have to be very patient w/ his development. Tons of upside, but lots of patience as well. Cutler is a guy who can make every single throw on the field and will immediately have one of the quickest releases in the NFL the second he steps on the field. In today's NFL w/ all the different blitz/ pass rush packages a DC throws at you, and also our struggles along the OL, having a guy w/ a release that quick is a huge asset. Cutler is also considered a guy w/ great toughness, smarts and leadership ability. However, Cutler is also a guy who needs work on his footwork , pocket awareness and decision making. If he gets thrown on the field prematurely he will most likely struggle mightily. But his mechanical issues are not major and through one TC and half a reg. season, a good OC/QB coach should have him pretty much in order.
The single biggest reason I'm down on Young is that the entire game plan has to be based on his talent set. If he goes down, throw the entire O game plan and scheme out the window. While Cutler is nowhere near the ball carrier Young is (is even Vick as good?) he also can create plays and make some downfield runs as well. Look at some of the tape highlights that Mayock showed.... he can run with the ball when he has to. Don't forget, in his first year at Vandy, he was an option QB out of the wishbone, and he was highly recruited, but for the safety position in college. Cutler has some mechanics to work out, but he has a really fast release, a rocket arm, is durable and according to all reports, a very smart kid, with a football player's mindset. He can roll out, and throw on the run. The more tape I see of him, the more I like this kid.... honestly, I really believe he can become a great NFL QB.
I wouldn't be thrilled with leapfrogging the Titans to do this, but I would still be happy to get Cutler. I think he has the most potential at the QB position. I want him in green and white.
as usual, nice analysis, Kurt. while decision-making may be a bit more intanglible, i believe those three "flaws" you listed are all coachable. Footwork and pocket awareness are two common areas that coaches can fix. I like that Cutler has the intangibles such as toughness and leadership. If Pennington restructures, then Cutler may be an unnecessary reach; if Pennington is released, then I say pull the trigger. cheers
This is a case study in hype getting way out of hand. The guy hasn't taken an NFL snap and he's already a first ballot Hall of Famer?
