I'd like to think that in his fifth season in the same offense, Clemens if needed could give us about the same production Sanchez did as a rookie last year, which wasn't great but got us where we wanted to go. Obviously without the upside of Sanchez, but if we can run the ball he can manage games and not kill us we might be ok. That said, I really hope Sanchez proves to be a durable QB and we don't need to find out.
Clemens has been decent and he knows the system better than any qb on the roster... you would rather have MB figure it out on the fly while the line shifts to a lefty? w/o the favre fu we could have seen him good or bad
I think Clemens looked pretty damn good in the Giants game. I know it's preseason, but there's no reason to think about cutting him right now. He will get a lot of playing time this week and we can see if he can repeat the performance. If Sanchez goes down for a few weeks, this is a great offense for Clemens to come into and maybe scrap up some wins -Great running game -3 great WRs in Holmes, Edwards, JCo -Familiar WR is Coles -Clemens knows the system better than anybody
I thought he looked pretty good in the Giants game and I'm not particularly keen on him playing. Still, it was a preseason game... and as for knowing the offense, he's known it for a while and that hasn't helped all that much in the past. I think he's served his purpose for the most part, and I am just hoping they can get a bag of chips and a 6 pack for him before the season starts.
The problem is that Clemens has never been given a legit shot when it counts. Last year he had one start without more than a day of practice with the first team. Timing was off as a result. Two years before when KC started he had zero healthy WRs a banged up Oline and injuried RBs. KC has been the ultimate team player and as a result knee jerk fans crap on him.
He had a chance in camp last year to beat out Sanchez. Now, maybe he was already behind the 8 ball because Sanchez was drafted as the future QB of the Jets, but he still had a fair shot to beat him out and let Sanchez sit and learn for a little while. Even if they were considered equal after training camp, a veteran QB who was currently in his 4th season as a Jet should not be even with a rookie who left college early. I agree about him playing behind a shitty line in '07 and I think he was good enough during the Tampa game last year. I have nothing against Clemens, I think he's a good backup NFL QB and he says all the right things. Maybe he's had some tough luck along the way, but he just isn't a starter in this league. I really do like him a backup for Sanchez.
I don't buy that. He had a chance to win the job as a rookie in 2006, half a year to play real games in 2007 and the whole off-season to impress in 2008, he never took advantage. He was never as good as Pennington, when they didn't trust Pennington anymore they traded for Favre, and when he left they drafted Sanchez who was instantly better than Clemens. Clemens is ok, a prototypical backup, just not one of the 32 best QBs in football.
we went from a backup with a pop-gun arm (chad) to a gunslinger ( farve) to the future franchise ( sanchez) back down to a backup with a pop-gun arm ( brunell). i was in cortland the day after joe willie was there, and i made a point of saying within earshot of the jets coaches near the fence : " if they want someone to throw 7 yard passes, i'll do it for free". clemens is way better than brunell. so is jeff garcia, brett ratliff, or brooks bollinger. i still can't figure out what these guys see in babe parelli's reincarnation. ps: ray lucas says the same thing i did. brunell shuold be a mentor/coach, not on the active roster.
I like how old people think when they make a snide comment within earshot that people care. It's cute.
What would possibly be the reason to cut Clemens at this point? To save a million $ against a non-existent cap? If he's one of the 3 best QB's on the roster at the end of camp, you keep him...unless: Someone offers something of value in trade, or The CS thinks that O'Connell has too much upside to dump...and I do not think that is at all sure at this point.
you weren't there. they took note of it. turned around. and, old means you're already out of grammar school. so, i accept your description. eh!
My step dad used to do the same thing. He got us kicked out of 49er training camp for making a comment about Joe Montana and Steve Young, good times.
