eh, I think most people would have said Shaun Alexander in 2004. I know I wouldn't have, but outside of this franchise Alexander would have gotten the nod over C-Mart. But Martin was always top 5 each year.
you should. That's why he didn't get in. He is not a 1st ballot player. He's a 2nd ballot HOFer. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get in next year.
Martin- 1697 yards, 4.6 average, 12 rushing TDs Alexander- 1696 yards, 4.8 average, 16 rushing TDs The raw numbers were obviously very close. I am pretty sure Football Outsiders had Martin ranked higher with their advanced statistical system. Martin was going to be a borderline 1st ballot choice. I understand it. I never said he was a no-brainer 1st ballot guy. If all the pass rushers cancelled one another out, then Martin may have gotten in. Of course, that didn't happen as Dent was elected. We'll never know how the voting went, but it was most likely that Dawson or Reed were next in line and then Martin. But, who knows, maybe Martin was the closest without getting in this year.
I agree with Mick, it will be a surprise if Curtis doesn't get in next year. That said, I feel he should have gotten in this year...I'm actually pretty disappointed.
this is exactly why guys act like douchebags. curtis martin grabbed his lunch pail and went to work every day for years. he was as good as any and far more consistent than most. yet because he wasnt flashy or bringing attention to himself he will have to wait to get in the hall of fame. MEANWHILE you have a complete piece of human garbage, steroid freak, loud mouth douche like shannon sharpe get in to the hall in front of curtis. you nfl hall of fame are to blame just like these kids parents when they run around acting like they are the king of the world worrying only about bringing attention to themselves. so dont go and get mad when they do a little dance after a touchdown instead of just handing the ball to the referee.
For me there should be no first year BS either you are a HOFer or you are not. He is, so he should have been elected. some years the classes are deeper than others so players might fall a year or so but Martin is not that type he is a no doubt HOF and to slip him down a notch is an insult.
This. It's tough for the fanbase given how few HOFers we actually have, but CMart really shouldn't have gotten in this year. I was just glad to see Bettis didn't either. The only way I would have been pissed is if Jerome found his way in first.
I disagree with this. Being a first ballot HOF'r is a special honer. The cream of the crop of HOF'rs get that honor.
It's just another way for some to act like some are better than others. Thats BS. Iggy I have no interest in being a writer but that does not mean my opinion is any less valed.
Martin and Bettis are first 2 RB's to finish in the top 10 rushing yds, not to make it into Hall on first ballot. Martin was totally a first ballot guy. Most years he'd have got the nod. Timing was rough this year, although i think both he and Faulk should have made it.
I agree that if Martin was a loud mouthed, "look at me" kind of guy on and off the field, he'd be in. I'm glad he was pure class and I look forward to his induction next year.
I am really irritated that Les Richter is in over Martin. I don't think Richter is deserving of being in the HOF. BUT, at least I'll be able to go when Martin gets in. So, in a selfish way, I'm happy he didn't make it this year.
I didn't expect Curt to get in year 1 but he'll get in next year. I would have been upset had Bettis got in over him but he was eliminated before Curtis so there are some sane voters.
i agree with this post, but i hate the lunch pail analogy...let the assholes up north use it to describe wes welker and danny woodhead
Pretty much. It's what the top 1 or 2 % of players, I think that saying one was a first year vrs a second year HOF is pretty catty when were talking about such a small number of players. They are all great to get into the conversation in the first place. Now I think there is a difference for borderline guys who may or may not eventually get in. But we are talking about the 4th leading rusher in history and all the rest of the top ten have gotten in on the first ballot.
No I think they are all HOF members which means they are awesome. I think you are splitting hairs because not every great WR has to be Jerry Rice to get in the HOF. So do you think that they are not as good as jerry rice they have to wait a year to get in when they are eligble?
