We need to resign Slauson if for nothing else we need a backup Center. But even more than that we need him to start over Vlad the Turnstyle. Other than that we should kick the tires of D.Landry and V.Butler in that order.
He's 26 going into this season and he has some upside potential. If he's cheap then he's a no-brainer over a 35 year old former All-Pro. His numbers don't look great for his career if you view him as a starting player but he's only started 3 games in 4 seasons. He has 11 sacks and 4 forced fumbles as an alternate. You don't sign somebody like Butler as a guaranteed starter. You sign him cheap and let him play and see if he plays well enough to get paid like a starter. Then you extend the 2 year deal you gave him if that happens. If it doesn't happen, well you got a decent rotational player for a year or two on the cheap. He's toast in free agency at 28 at that point but that's how the NFL works. Unless you're a star it's Not-For-Long. BTW, the worst move Butler could make at this point is going back to the Cowboys. They already know him and they haven't let him start yet except for injuries. He needs a fresh set of eyes on him to kick-start his career and there is no better pair of eyes in the NFL than Rex Ryan to do that. I'd be selling that point to him and his agent over and over again. Come to NY and you might be a star in a Rex Ryan defense. Go somewhere else and you are taking your chances and so far that's been role-player material.
Wile those all seem like viable options, most of them will remained unsigned till after the draft at this point. Butler may not even be an option for us at this point. We have signed one OLB, have Sapp and McIntire to compete as well. If we draft a OLB there really is no need to add a 5th to the mix. Same goes for DHB or Edwards. We have enough bodies at the position untill after we see how the draft plays out. TE and Saftey can use some help. The problem being the 9 mill we have left to spend. We may bring in one or two more vet min type guys, but only have room for one decent deal that pays any guaranteed money.
Show me the stats that suggest that Vlad is a turnstyle. In fact, I would venture to say that Vlad OUTPLAYED Slauson at LG when given the opportunity. He's a better run blocker & Slauson is only a marginally better in pass pro. We used a #2 pick on Ducasse in hopes that he would develop into a plus player along the OL. Well..now it's time to cash in on the investment. He's truly ready to compete for starting job. Ducasse/Colon could be a really solid upgrade over Slauson/Moore(Who's play was clearly slipping)
Before last season, Vlad's struggles were so obvious that a simple eyeball test was good enough. Vlad did show some improvement last season but the blocking scheme also changed out of zone blocking. With the incoming West Coast Offense, Jets are once again going back to zone blocking. The big question now is whether Vlad's progress last year can carry over to the zone blocking scheme he's always struggled with. ========= Also, whether Vlad deserves the chance to start has nothing to do with him being the #2 pick. He was the #2 pick when Jets put late rounder Matt Slauson in front of him. Forcing some production out of Vlad to justify the draft selection is something Tanny would need to do, not Idzik.
All good points. I did emphasize the word "Compete".And if last season was any indication..I think Ducasse would beat out Slauson. Additionally..the zone scheme that runs w/ the WCO is alot different than the one under Schotty. Who knows how Vlad will project within it.
http://www.ganggreennation.com/2013/2/23/4017360/vladimir-ducasse-stay-or-go "According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed 9 sacks/hits/hurries in just 155 pass blocking plays. That puts him at the bottom of the league for guards. If you use their pass blocking efficiency stat which judges how many sacks/hits/hurries you allow on a per play basis, he would rank 60th if he had participate in 25% of the team's pass plays." Turnstile.
There's that.. But than there's this.. http://thejetsblog.com/bga/bga-weekly-ducasse-v-slauson/#more-68667 "On 46 drives*, the Jets gained 1,200 yards, scoring seven touchdowns and two field goals. They compiled a total of 72 first downs (including the seven touchdowns) and rushed for 464 yards on 109 carries. Between them, the quarterbacks threw 123 times with Ducasse in for Slauson, completing 70 for 747 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions." "- The offense as a whole gained 25.8 yards per drive (not including kneel-downs at the end of the half). With Ducasse in for Slauson, they averaged 26.0 yards per drive. - Their drive success ratio (the percentage rate at which the team managed to pick up a first down or touchdown – see above link again) was 64.7% (27th in the league). With Ducasse in for Slauson, this went up to 66.7%, which would have been good enough for 21st. - The Jets scored 26 offensive touchdowns and seven of them came on drives where Vlad was in for Slauson. That’s basically in line with his snap count." -- With Ducasse in for Slauson, the Jets gained 4.3 yards per carry, well above their season’s average of 3.8 yards per carry. This was not influenced dramatically by outliers – even if you remove the longest run, a 36-yard Shonn Greene run against Miami from the numbers, you still get 4.0 which is still better than the overall average. Also, any yard per carry numbers could be looked at with skepticism because of the 252-yard game against the Colts which skews the numbers upwards, but they gained just 57 yards on 14 carries with Ducasse in for Slauson in that game, so his average was pretty consistent throughout the year. - They also gained 80 rushing yards per game with Ducasse in for Slauson, which is 27% of the team total, again in line with his snap count. - When the Jets passed the ball with Ducasse in for Slauson, they completed 57% of their passes (overall 55%) and gained over 10.7 yards per completion (overall 10.6) but they had five interceptions and only three touchdowns, so the QB rating was lower (66.0 compared with 68.3 overall)." If Vlad is a "Turnstyle" what does that make Slauson?
I really thought the Jets didn't pursue Moore because he was retiring, but now I hear he's visited like 5 teams trying to catch on somewhere. WTF? Moore's a grizzled ol vet with an imprint of Mark's face on his ass. NO draft pic can waltz in and play from day one like Moore could. Is he asking for too much money? What gives?
check it out pro football talk posted cap space left by each nfl team Jets are in the middle of the pack with 13 million,we have the 12th most cap space so we are in decent shape
Schotty does not run a WCO can we dispense with that please. Schotty runs a 1950s style deep drop 4 plus seconds offense that makes qbs either inaccurate, or hurt.
Yes, relative to the cap, a rookie can replace moore. The greedy players voted a cap on draftees that had no vote, and now older players are being forced to play for less....their looking for what they might have gotten....now...younger,stronger,faster,and cheaper....rules. DeMauroce Smith should be prison ass raped by the NFLPA. Personally I dont care,, but hes either incredibly stupid, or working for the owners.
Personally i'd love to see Moore back. i know he's getting old, and his play is due to decline. However, we have only Colon, Ducasse, and Schlauderlaff (spelling?) on the roster. Colon has a lot of injury history and i'm not sold on Ducasse starting, or even definitely making the team. We'll need to draft a Guard, i hope in first 2 rounds. Just in case we don't though, Moore is proven depth and is quite good at zone blocking. Cheap contract would be insurance, and he could retire a Jet. It's possible he doesn't start depending on when we draft a G, and if Colon holds up.
Moore is done here, I think the butt fumble thing was a real embaressment for him and i think he was glad to leave and not be remembered for being involved in that his whole carrer he always got mad in interviews about it,also Idzik is going younger across the boARD so
So those points are great but why has nobody offered him a contract, he has to want to much money. Hence why I am taking that nasty vet that can actually play a violent OLB in Harrison. You add Harrison to this D with landry part two, draft an OLB on the first and this D is back
i think that play was way more embarrassing for Sanchez. Moore got pushed back a bit, but was still holding the pocket. Sanchez ran into him head down and flopped the football to the turf. Idzik is trying to get the team younger no doubt. But you can't do it all in 1 year unless the depth will be all UDFA's and camp cuts from other teams. Every team has stop gaps and vets, even rebuilding ones.
Nobody's disputing that but Moore is clearly furious and embarassed that he will forever be linked to that play.
