If Logan Payne is out 6-8 weeks, I can't imagine not IR'ing him. Can Gilyard play special teams? Other than KR and PR, which I know he can do.
No, it's really not. Think about it: how many snaps was McElroy going to get? None. He'll get a redshirt season behind a young up-and-comer and a seasoned veteran. Kevin O'Connell knows the offense and he'll provide a HEALTHY practice arm. This move will not hurt his development. His arm isn't going to get any stronger - that's why he fell to the seventh round. His mind will continue to grow even if he's on the IR. He'll have a year to hold a clipboard, sit back, and watch this game.
Not surprised to see Martin Tevaseu released. This team is loaded on the defensive line now. There just isn't room for a third nose tackle. Glad to see Jarron Gilbert back on the practice squad - solid depth if someone goes down.
Gilyard and Kerley seem a little redundant, but I liked Gilyard a lot in college, really glad we signed him.
Said MTV would be a hard guy to cut... however i can see him sneaking back on the roster once Turner is healthy again. For now he's a good fit on the PS (if he gets there).
More so for MTV...I should have been clearer. Rex raved about MTV all pre-season so it was surprising to see him get cut. Trufant and Maybin? Not so much.
Sure, I'm not suggesting that it in any way hurts the Jets' chances this season; it's still a shame for him that he won't get to spend the season training with the big boys though, and it won't do his development any good.
From an article on NFL.com talking about Maybin reporting a conversation with Rex: "He played well, and he's on our roster," Ryan said. "He's one of those guys we had talked about where we probably had three spots open, and I thought his play rushing the passer, that's what landed him on the roster."
