mathematically we have a better chance, yes, because of the possibility of the Phillies collapsing. I just think the Brewers have a slightly better chance of taking 2 of 3 than we do.
silly conversation here. Every Mets fan living in reality has to be at least a little negative. I do agree that sometimes people take it overboard here, but I won't quibble. The posts I don't like are "Oh, we're definitely going to lose now." That's just stupid.
Wow, I'm a little upset to see people hating on Wright so much. I guess .300/33/124/.389/.536 means nothing?
I think Wright is their best player, and of course I've already said that I think trading him is crazy. Having said that, there is no denying that his numbers with RISP are poor this year, and he's gotten progressively worse going from batting in the 1st-to-3rd innings, to 4th-to-6th, to 7th-to-9th, to extra innings. The same was true last year. Part of this isn't his fault - when you're one of the big threats opposition teams treat you differently in important situations, bring in closers and specialists, etc. - but it happening in two years when the Mets desperately need late game and late season heroics makes it more apparent. On the other hand, I have never said that he (or anyone else) is a choker or is gutless, accusations that others throw around with impunity. I have no idea what goes on in someone's head, so I make no claims that they "can't take the heat" because of psychological limitations - I just see the results, and adjust my expectations accordingly.
Good points. I just dont understand how some people can be cursing him out or making posts about trading him away when hes 25 years old. I know you're not one of them, but it just seems bizarre to me.
Haha that's funny.... I assumed Smith would blow it after he put Fontenot on 2nd with the wild pitch. The wife was bitching so I figured that was a good oppurtunity to bounce. Looks like I chose wrong. BTW anybody notice this bs with Ichiro in Seattle, apparently players might attack him. Maybe the Mets should inquire about a trade. Obviously in November but imagine the lineup with Reyes leading off and Ichiro hitting 2nd or vice versa?
well, Ichiro is not the greatest clubhouse presence. There've always been problems, and it's worse now that the team sucks badly. I don't want him. He relies on his speed and he's 34. Plus he's way overpaid.
I stopped following the Mets when Wagner went down. When they collapse again I'll have nothing invested. After the BS that happened last year, I refuse to get my hopes up. If they somehow make it to the playoffs I'll be a fair weather fan and watch.
Wright's "clutch" hitting was fine last year. His numbers in the 7-9th inning may have taken a dip but he was great with RISP overall. I think a part of his late inning struggles could be attributed to the fact that now teams will always bring a righty in to pitch to him. Obviously this year he's been awful with RISP, but the runner on 3rd and less then 2 outs is what really stands out to me. 70 PA in that situation and he's only got 37 RBI. Just goes to show you what a silly stat RBI is, this guy is probably going to break the Mets single season record and he's been awful in RBI situations. One good thing to take out of this year though, is his OPS ranges from the mid to high .900s when the game is tied or the Mets are winning or losing by 1-4 runs and drops to .678 when the Mets are winning or losing by more then 4 runs
i actually had the intestinal fortitude for once to watch past this play........although my trigger finger twitched at that point.........I stuck it out, and it finally paid off........although it was gut wrenching as usual (Murphy and the bunting escapade, Church's base running blunders/luck, Wright striking out in a big spot...again......and Beltrans line drive just glancing off that dude's glove)... nothing is easy
Cubs manager Lou Piniella rested stars Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Geovany Soto on Thursday and could rest several regulars again Friday, though he does plan to play his starters this weekend to prepare for the postseason. "We've got to rest our team a little bit," said Piniella, whose team is 8-5 versus Milwaukee overall. "What's the sense of trying to take care of everybody else. Take care of yourself, too." http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/preview/MLB_20080926_CHC@MIL
This is to explain my Wright trade comment from the other night- If, and I repeat IF, the Mets collapse again, I don't see how they could bring back the same core. If they miss the playoffs again, they should do something drastic. They don't need to worry about selling seats for the 2009 season. The Mets could be shitty and people will go in 2009 just for the new ballpark. I understand Wright is a huge draw, especially with teenyboppers. Many fans would be pissed off just like when Seaver and Dykstra were traded. The Mets won't be able to fix all the holes in free agency. Wright could bring back multiple good players and a couple prospects. The team could suck in 2009 to build for 2010. Well, that's what I was thinking about the other night. Here on Friday evening and with a clearer head, I'd rather the Mets keep him and that he stops trying to be the white A-Rod. But if you fellows want to call me a moron for even suggesting a trade of Wright, then so be it.
Yeah, I don't know what I was looking at, but his 2007 numbers were fine. As you say, it is good at least that his poor performances have been when the team is either way ahead or way behind.
