Did you watch any Jets' games in 2009? You the know the season when Lito Sheppard, Dwight Lowery, and Drew Coleman platooned at the other corner spot opposite Darrelle Revis. If you did pay attention to any of that season, you'd know that the New York Jets made it to the AFC Championship Game and lost. ...just like this last season.
No worries on the clarification, guys. Also, don't know if everyone saw, but Schein also tweeted implying Cro is going to wait for Aso to set the market before Cro works his deal. So, if Cro is waiting on Aso... That means he's wanting big time money, huge. Aso is suspected to get up to 14-20M. I wonder what Cro thinks his value is, or what he'd want theoretically, right off the bat? One of the ESPN's had a report just a bit ago saying something with the connotation of... If you, as a GM, have a big time free agent, big money one... You need to skip the cat and mouse garbage, don't even think about low balling them, and forget the usual back and forth song and dance where you start low and work your way up, just blow them out of the water in the 72 hour window, because free agency is going to be so crazy, and you don't want to run the risk of alienating your FA and dealing with what has potential to be a major bidding war.
He's gone. No way the Jets can afford to compete with the market at this point. I like Aqib Talib as an option. His character concerns are high but Rex and co have proved that they can keep guys in check. In a way those red flags are a good thing because teams will be reluctant to sign him and his price drops. I can see the Bucs signing Asomugha and dumping Talib.
I agree we should let Cromartie walk, but I'm hardly sold on giving Wilson the job given what we saw out of him so far. We didn't draft Wilson to have him play nickel, but we also didn't draft Gholston to have him be a bust. You play the hand you're dealt. I think we need to sign another corner who can be shifted into the nickel in time when Wilson is ready. I don't really want to give Wilson the job wholesale however.
Do u think ANY of our big FAs will sign during the72 hour period? No, and neither will any other UFA unless the "hometown" overpays.
There are really a lot of good corners on the market. Two Ravens are available in Chris Carr and Josh Wilson. Talib is really good as well, and I'm a big Brent Grimes fan out of Atlanta. I think we'll be fine without Cromartie - but we should sign someone on the next level down.
I was about to say... Good clarification, this. Likely jail time looming is a no-go. Let's steer clear of that if we can. Although, his trial is pushed back, right? Maybe we take a one year flyer on Talib, and give Kyle one more year to grow in to the role. Short term (and cheap) might be a good idea anyway, given Kylie is waiting in the wings.
A couple days ago, I heard that Tampa would hold on to Talib despite his troubles. They'll probably try to trade him before releasing him. With how high the Jets' team salary is, our best bet is to go after "Rex Ryan" guys that won't cost much - the Ravens are losing a couple corners: Chris Carr, Fabian Washington and Josh Wilson would all be solid pick ups. I'm about to create a thread with possible free agent targets.
whatever happened to having some semblance of loyalty. I understand the NFL is a business and just like any other business you got to look out for yourself so I usually hate to make this point, but this case is a little differant. Cromartie was becoming a joke, people were largely thinking of him negatively: he was losing favor in SD and more people thought of him for his off the field issues than as the corner he once was. Jets trade for him, he gets back into the spotlight he once was in: gets to guard team's no 2's and on top of that the Jets helped him out with his child support issues. and this is how he repays them? refusing to even fathom signing up before hitting the open market? A desire to see your worth is one thing, but to come out and say you are not even considering signing back up after the 2nd chance Tannenbaum has given him is kind of a slap in the face I think.. Also I think its a bad career move for him to sign with a lesser team so as to be their no. 1 corner. He's good but he's not great and has his ups and downs. But if he signs big with a team that has high expectations as their top signing he could fall out of favor very quickly with his inconsistencies and could be released in a couple years. Or he could sign back with the Jets, stay in the spotlight, and not be expected to be Revis or even guard a no. 1 reciever.... assuming the money is close that seems like a no brainer.
Meh... we're talking about millions of dollars here and careers are very short in this sport. I think Cromartie is grateful to the Jets but it's not like he OWES them anything... also he knows as long as he stays here he'll always be #2 to the best CB of his generation... Put it this way, the more careers we resurrect the more FAs will want to sign with us.
So 314 is 1/3 of the way to jumping off a bridge. I expected this. I expect it with most FAs that aren't JAGs.
I say let that punk ass Cromartie walk, obviously he does not want a ring. I read his tweets about his baby mother drama and think, "what a dumb ass" .
Cromartie has a ton of child support to pay, and any deal he signs is going to be with a ton of front-loaded and guaranteed money. He's a cornerback, so he probably doesn't have a super long career ahead of him. This is his one big chance to get paid. He's not looking to have a long career. He's looking to get paid, as well he should be. It would be crazy of him to give the Jets a discount.
Also, Tannenbaum didn't give Cromartie a 2nd shot or anything of the kind. He was the starting cornerback for the division champions. Tannenbaum brought him to a favorable situation and he responded well, but it's not like Cromartie was a guy he brought in off the street either. He didn't give him a new contract, or a pay raise. He just traded for the guy.
I could be wrong, but I believe he was demoted to third string and was announced as available at some point the year before. I do recall tanny forwarding him an advance on his pay so he could keep up to date on his bills.
