You have to remember Revis was injured part of the year and so was Leonhard. I think that hurt us a whole that more than replacing lito with cro. Just sayin
I feel like you can attribute this to other things not named Cromartie. Leonhards injury last year was a complete disaster for this team. On top of that our d-line didn't generate enough pass rush, which caused our other cornerbacks/LB to get picked on. How many times last year did we see a QB scramble out of the pocket and throw the ball to a receiver who was already 5 yards ahead of a linebacker covering him? I've posted this link ad nauseam but I feel everyone needs to see it. Cromartie was fantastic for us last year. I said from the beginning $8 mil was an appropriate amount for his services. I don't feel we overpaid at all. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/best-cornerback-charting-stats-2010
Leonhard was injured late in the season, so we can't really use him as an excuse. Our pass rush was barely effective last season, and our defense suffered as a result, but what changed from 2009?
Pool couldn't grasp the system for much of the season. Wilson was playing terribly for the first quarter and we forgot how to play third downs for a long, long time.
I'm glad they got this done. My fear was that Cromartie was going to be too pissed off to want to play here again.
I think we can for the last few games of the season. He was injured right before the Pats game. I'm not gonna solely attribute the 45-3 beatdown to his injury. That would be foolish. However, he is an integral part to our defense (Rex doesn't call him the captain of the defense for nothing), and our pass defense suffered as a result. We also got murdered by the Bears on defense (believe they put up 38 points). The pass defense went from 154 to 200 yds per game allowed from '09 to '10. We actually registered 8 more sacks last year than the in '09. Our run defense actually improved from 98 yds/game to 91 last year. Personally, I think our defense took a slight step backwards last year for three reasons: 1) Teams started to figure our Rexs elaborate blitzing schemes and made the necessary adjustments on offense 2) Our d-line pressure just wasn't there. I obviously can't find a statistic to back up my point on this, but using subjective judgment, I felt we were able to get to the QB quicker in '09 than '10. 3) Teams don't throw to Revis. In '09, EVERY QB challenged Revis, and they all failed. More wasted throws towards Revis end, meant more incompletions, less yards, more punts, less points, etc. In '10 Revis targets were nearly cut to a third of what they were in '09. As well as Cromartie played last year, he isn't Revis, and gave up his fair share of completions.
Gotcha. Yeah, his ability to draw the best out of this defense despite injury and (more importantly) an insanely subpar pass rush has been nothing short of brilliant. IIRC, I do think he had a lot of injuries in 08 and still fielded a top 5 defense. I know Landry and Gregg were hurt.
I would have much preferred we signed Braylon than Cro. I truly hope Cro makes me eat my words. But I have my doubts. ricky williams
During the Aso negotiations, the Jets told him to wait. He didn't wait. The Bills picked him up. He's not a big loss.
