That is pure speculation...You are basing that off of what? As assumption? 1 loss to the Bills was during an extreme slump, and the loss to Texans Fitz was in the midst of his thumb injury. Pointing to the O-Line as why the Jets didn't make playoffs is asinine. The real reason is because the Jets slumped mid season as a team and Fitz tore his thumb up. We could easily say if he didn't the Jets would have made the playoffs or even been #1 seed. Which is as baseless as blaming the O-Line. Addtionally, that first lost to the Bills was hardly the O line. Ivory fumbled on our side of the field, Devin Smith fumbled on a return leading to a ST touchdown, and the offense didn't convert at the goal line, none of those reason being a sack. The second loss to the Bills, Bills had the ball for 29 minutes. The Oline was on the bench during those 29 minutes. There were a lot of factors the Jets didn't make the playoffs, but to put it on the OLine is silly IMO. I expect in year 2 of this team and coaching staff, we will avoid the growing pains of that slump and finish the job.
If that's the case, then why on overthecap.com, is there a box entitled dead money, and there are players listed in that box that are still on the Jets, and it shows that there is a "dead money" cap hit????
That is a what if? If we cut them in year X there will be so much dead money. If you look at the entire roster there will be another list of dead money for players that are already gone. That is the actual dead money that we already have.
LIJetsFan, thanks for sharing this. It is interesting, but I don't see it as very realistic for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I don't think there's any way the Jets re-sign Mo for $9 million a year unless his contract is 100% guaranteed and there are easily attained incentives that could push the total of the deal well north of the original figure. Second, his initial cap figure is the lowest I've seen. Other people have supposedly quoted overthecap and said there was a $2.4 million carry over, so if true, the Jets would have $13.1 million initial cap space, not the $10.7 figure he quotes. Third, I don't see how he'd lower both Mangold's and Marshall's cap hit so much. Neither deserves a salary cut, and I don't think either would take one, even to help the team. If the Jets had a young franchise QB that was ready to start and were a legit SB contender, maybe, but not with a JAG QB that just had a career year and the issues/holes the Jets still have. The only way I could see getting their cap hit so much lower would be to restructure thus kicking money down the road. That's not wise with aging players whose play can drop off suddenly and how are more injury prone. I would be against those moves. That would be the type of move that could bite the Jets in the ass big time in a year or two when they were at the point where there were ready to be serious contenders, then wind up having to cut good players to get under the cap because of the dead money of those two players. No thanks. Four, I will be surprised if Jamari Lattimore is back. I was disappointed in his contributions this season. I expected more. I think the Jets can get the same level of play from a cheaper player. Five, I can't see the Jets letting Douzable and Allen walk. Allen fits the profile of Deon Bucannon in Bowles' D. Douzable is a great rotational player, solid depth, and cheap. There's no way I'd let those two go, especially to bring back Lattimore. Six, I'd be shocked if Cro took that much of a pay cut, and maybe even if Mac and Bowles asked him to. I think he's either back at a slightly reduced rate, or is a goner altogether. There are other things I just disagree with. Letting Walls walk isn't one of them, but I think many posters here would disagree with that. I wouldn't let Kenbrell Thompkins walk. He was solid depth, and with Smith coming back from an injury and being a rookie again, there's no way I don't keep Thompkins. As for the FAs he adds, I don't know some of those players, so can't comment on them and can't comment on how realistic the contract numbers might be. I'd love to add Lowery back, but would be surprised if that happens. I think the Jets like Deon Bailey and Miles, as well as AA. I can't see their adding Lowery, although it might not be a bad move if they let Bailey or Miles go instead. The addition of Miller would be great. I like the addition of Schwartz and upgrading the LT depth. There's no way I'd replace Douzable with Bowers, who is undersized. The only 2 draft picks whose names I know are Spence and Hackett. While I would love the addition of a top OLB prospect with a great motor, I'd be shocked if the Jets added someone with his character concerns. They'd have to have thoroughly vetted him and know that was in the past and no longer an issue, and with any chemical addiction, it's NEVER in the past. It's with the person every day the rest of their lives. I'd love the pick of Hackett in the 7th. I like the sound of the speed RB, but does he play STs? If not, I'd rather look elsewhere. IMO the Jets have to find a RB or WR to be a PR/KOR.
I don't think that's accurate, because there are players in that box who are no longer with the team. It doesn't make sense to me to mix players already gone with those still on the roster. Deon Simon and Taiwan Jones are both listed there, just to name two, and they're not getting cut unless the Jets again draft players at those positions who are better.
The salary cap includes the top 51 salaries plus any bonuses for players not in the top 51. These bonuses were added to the dead money instead of having their own category. That is why current and past players making less than player 51 have their pro-rated bonuses included.
I totally agree that TOJ's Dalbin Osorio is way of base with his contract/cap/restructure projections. He is so far off that his roster would be impossible to construct in real life. I wouldn't keep or let walk half the players he suggests either. The reason I posted his article was that it neatly summarizes and lists the issues we face this off season and might serve as a good starting point for further discussion.
