I'd sign for that combo right now. Cowher and Butler to run the D would be a dream come true.

That's a good point and it'd really make me reconsider the idea, except for one thing...it's Bill Cowher here we're talking about. I can't see him doing anything with only half a heart set on it. Even if he does come back for money, I doubt it'd take long before his fire gets burning too.

Truth my man! We need a tough, experienced football coach in here. I certainly hope there is no truth to Woody's statements about wanting Favre back next year or it will be a long, long year in 2009.

while mangini was a young coach, we hired for the wrong reasons. A. to piss of Bellicheik and B. to try to emulate the Patroits (there should be a mount rushmore of failed former-patriots assistants and coordinators). It obviously did not work, however, saying that we need someone like Cower is dumb. Look at the Steelers and Ravens, hiring young coaches that have been extremely succesful, that is because they can Relate to the players, something that Mangini never could do as he never put on the pads, and his strict style of coaching just doesn't work in the pros anymore (look at Coughlin, eases up a little bit with the discplinarian routine and the Giants win the superbowl). hopefully we hire someone that has a vision for our team, and not just to piss of Bellichek.

Cowher didn't do jack shit in Pittsburgh except choke. He was lucky the League and Refs gave him that Super Bowl in Detroit. It also made such a heart warming story for Bettis.

As for Parcells, why would you want to rehire a coach that already screwed you over? Must be a glutton for punishment. Enough with these old school coaches. Put a fork in them already.

"I was thinking about this last night and what excited me about the prospect of hiring Cowher is that not only does he seem to have a great nose for assembling a CS, he can also draw the right candidates."

Is the current Pitts. coach a former Cowher asst? Thanks.

No, he's a former Bucs assistant, but almost the entire defensive CS was assembled under Cowher.

I could see it being Cowher or Spags. Either of which being given a 3 year deal.

Cowher makes me nervous; because, like Favre I wonder if the commitment would be there. Otherwise, I think it a solid choice. The chin & grimace not taking shit on the sideline would be perfect for our oft underachieving bunch. I also think he could handle the NY media. And I think he'd serve as a mentor of sorts to Tannenbaum.

Spags is intriguing because he knows the town. Knows the field. We'd go back to being a 4-3 team and my hunch is that he'd bring a buddy or two from either the G-men or his days with the Eagles to run the D.

With either, we'd definitely be a more solid and aggressive D. Offense would be smashmouth with a conservative edge.

our last 3 coaches have been first time head coaches - it is time to go with a proven winner in this league

Cowher has just told the browns he is not interested in joining them so he might be available
