getting 6 TOs helps w/ TOP. I am not trying to take away credit from the O but w/o those TOs I don't think we win.

Is 78 the most irrelevant number in Jets history? Every time we update this thread I like to think about the best player ever at that number. 78 is WEAK!

edit: here ya go - all the 78s in Jets history
    Lou Benfatti 1994-1995

    Barry Bennett 1982-1988

    Terry Day 1997-1997

    Leger Douzable 2013-

    Jonathan Goodwin 2002-2005

    Jim Harris 1965- 1967

    Wayne Hunter 2008-2011

    Mario Johnson 1992-1992

    Scott Jones 1990-1990

    Jack Klotz 1960-1963

    Garry Puetz 1973-1978

    LaVerne Torczon 1962-1962

You know it's a pretty sad list when you are almost considering calling Wayne F. Hunter the best on it. (unless you old timers know about the guys in the 60s and 70s and want to educate me)

Browning the best player by a mile turned out to be Jonathan Goodwin

    for someone else :(

people hate when I suggest this, and hindsight is 20/20, but suppose the front office kept John Abraham and instead of getting Mangold, just kept Goodwin as center. that's the better option - looking back of course!

hate to nitpick, I don't think that's actually goodwin haha. His last year was 2005. Favre didn't come here until 2008.That's gotta be Wayne Hunter.

It is Hunter, I think that was the big scramble Favre had against Buffalo.

The Jets didn't trade Abraham because they needed a center, they traded him because of constant injuries and questions about commitment conflicting with money. They would have traded him regardless of having Goodwin.

A better argument would be that they could have spent that Mangold DP on a pass rusher, or traded down for more picks.

Your second argument I am on board with.

The first? I don't know. I remember the issues with Abraham well, but I don't necessarily think they had to trade him. At the end of the day, they wanted to trade him. I also think they made a mistake and got fleeced in the deal, but that's my opinion now. At the time I did feel differently though.

Abraham was a diva for sure but dynamic pass rushers are incredibly hard to come by and he was a dynamic pass rusher. In the years since the trade, this organization has wasted countless resources including a top 10 draft pick trying to replicate what Abraham brought them and they haven't even been close.

Whether or not they should have traded him is up for debate, but the hole at center had nothing to do with actually trading him. It's not like they got that DP and were like "yeah now we're drafting Mangold". Abraham was traded weeks before the draft.

Would it have been a better scenario to keep him and also sign Goodwin? Yeah, it may have been, but it also would have been a better scenario that year to never hire Mangini, but you can play that hindsight game all day long.

Abe as gone either way, he just had the DUI issue and he was hurt a lot and they didn't want to pay him top dollar.
