I loved Leon Johnson. It's a shame he's already been largely forgotten by fans of that 98 team, too. Last year, someone mistakenly referred to Leon Washington as Leon Johnson. I made a joke about it, and only a couple of people got it. Of course, I don't think he ever managed more than a couple hundred yards in a season outside of his returns. Oh well.
That and karma. There were a lot of people on the old usenet groups laughing when the Pats lost Robert Edwards, their young hope at RB.
That rookie game on the beach. I remember watching a replay of that game (don't ask me why) after the extent of Edwards' injury was known. The announcers were laughing at something, and somebody said, "Looks like a player is hurt. We'll be back in a minute." There was no footage of the play, and no further mention of Edwards in the telecast. Poor bastard.
Alas, another countdown comes to #31 and I'm unable to post my namesake Marion Barber! I've looked online for photos of him in his Jet uniform but have never been able to find any (and thus my lack of an Avitar)...perhaps because the 8 million pages of the google image search turn up photos of his son. My irrational love for the disappointing second round pick was born watching his highlight footage on Sports Extra with Bill Mazur the day after the draft. He was a bull at Minnisota, just ran over people. With Freeman McNeil taken in the first and Barber in the second, most thought the Jet backfield was set for a decade. As I remember it he got a bad concussion in his rookie TC that kept him out of action for a long time and afterward never got much of a shot. He did eventually become an excellent special teamer (more than Ralph Clayton can say!) but that's not what you draft someone in the second round for. So, 31 days before it all begins, here's to you Marion! and if anyone's got a digital photo of him and can post it I will finally have an avi...
That's the way I remember it. Mike Augustyniak did so well at FB in 1981 they stuck with him and then drafted Dwayne Crutchfield who was a disappointment at the position, but Barber never became the full-time player.
WOOOO HOOOO!!!!! Thanks Junc...YOU ROCK!!! I won't repost the jpeg since you already did, but now I can't wait until next summer so I can post it myself. And now to figure out how to set up my Avi. I can add this to my diversions from actually doing any work. I don't know about the rest of you, but with everyone tweeting from camp, etc. I'm spending way too much time searching for tidbits of info from camp and doing zero work. Thanks again Junc, that was really nice of you!
It's very rare I go on a message board and keep the same avatar for weeks, let alone months and almost a year now, but that picture of a beaten down Brady after Ellis sacked him and stripped him to end the game back in '06 is just about perfect. We very rarely get the best of that pretty boy c--ks----r so that is my favorite Jet picture in recent memory and the pic is going nowhere. It brings a smile to my face every time I see it.
You should keep it, it's a classic. Also because New England put a new field down after that game, so it's the last good look at Brady sitting in the mud at our expense. I used to rotate my avatar with old Jets but I settled on Gastineau, largely because nobody else here has him and he was a great Jet.
I noticed Total Access on NFLN is doing this same thing with the countdown to opening day, last night they used an Eric Dickerson clip for #29. The question is did they steal the idea from us or did we take it from them?
^ Haha, someone has a signed Reggie Cobb photo as a Jet? What was he with us for, one season? Reminds me that I have an auto'd Glenn Foley glossy from when we thought he was the next great ascending backup.
