I really don't understand why you all think this is such an irrational idea. I think it's very plausible. He's a very quick LB. The only reason most of you are saying what you're saying is because he's a LB and you can't comprehend that this is something at least worth a look. Ignore the fact that he's a LB for two seconds and analyze his abilities. He's a hard hitter who's quick to the ball. I can see the Roy Williams analysis that someone gave (which to me, is not a good thing), but he's also a smarter football player than Roy Williams is, which is really where Williams' faults lie. If the CS thinks this move can be made and Vilma's willing to give it a try, it's definitely something to look into and not just write off because he's a LB.
yeah, in a 46 or something of that ilk. think about it this way, if you were a CB and you had Vilma shading your side of the field behind you, how comfortable would you really feel depending on him if need be?
it would be much better to tweak the D to a hybrid 4-6/4-5 but you need at least one if not 2 good cover corners...... the only problem with that is many teams have a set 3 receiver package as their base and if you go to 4 wide it renders the 4-5/6 almost ineffective. not a terrible idea with vilma but he is a pure MLB and he would be more successful in almost anything that has at least 4 down lineman jil
I've seen the complete opposite. Vilma has been and will be a complete player for the Jets if he stays. He's a good solid LB who is a ballhawk and solid in coverage. I'm not entirely sure where these knocks on him are coming from. If he could slim down a bit and get his speed up, I think he can definitely make the switch. That's only if he'd welcome the move though. I really don't understand how everyone can just write this notion off. It's a very interesting point I think. Ideally, I'd say coach him up in the 3-4 and keep him at LB, but to say this is out of the question without really considering the idea is a little presumptuous.

EDIT: Most of that was not directed at your response ShutEmDown...only the first bit. DOUBLE EDIT: Damnit, sorry for the double post haha.
He can't cover a WR, he can't give deep help on the double, he limits the ability to play zone . Say we tried it in the patriots game, moss and stallworth would go deep every play, he'd never keep up, so it'd single up. Teams are killing the bears' archuleta and he is faster than Vilma and better in coverage. Quickness side to side and coming to the line as a MLB is not the same as the speed needed to play DB.
I agree that at his current playing weight, he probably can't keep up. But if he sheds some weight and works on his speed, he still has that natural instinct that I think would make him a good safety and he's still a ballhawk. Archuleta's fallen off the past couple of years so I don't consider him a good safety anyway. Is Archuleta faster than Vilma now? I'm not even certain of that. I know Vilma's not much slower than Brian Dawkins, and he's still a premier safety because of his instincts.
