That's a huge if regarding Sanchez. You just can't turn back the clock on a QB to a different time. That was 4 years ago. He has regressed every year since and will never be the same. He has given us zero reason to believe that he will just all of a sudden turn it around this year. As someone else mentioned, he doesn't deserve to be the incumbent starter going into TC. He needs to win the job from whomever they bring in to compete with him. The primary target of our WR corp was Kerley by far. He had 56 catches and 96 targets. Hill only had 21 catches on 47 targets.
That's a major point that the Jets have to deal with as they resolve this moving forward. There's a reason that Harbaugh could turn the page on Alex Smith as easily as he did and that's because the other players on the 49ers knew that Smith wasn't the guy who was going to lead them to a Super Bowl. Yeah, Smith had played very well under Harbaugh but the guys in that clubhouse knew what his ceiling was and they knew how he handled pressure when the chips were down. They were likely all quietly dreading getting into a huge game with him where if he couldn't pull it all together against a great defense they were going to lose. History is important and right now the Jets can either change the QB or they can try to figure out how to get 30-odd guys to forget the fact that they've seen Sanchez rattled to his core over and over again. That last snap in the Titans game from Mangold? If you believe it was an accident I have a bridge to sell you.
So you mean to say that Mangold did that on purpose because Sanchez sucked...? Why, though? Wasn't winning more important? Or, am I misreading your point.
I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this post, but I just found this on PFM, and it relates to the Jets being good. So, without further adieu, here it is: Alternate Universe Update: Bill Belichick Celebrates 5th Super Bowl Win As Jets Coach Stay thirsty, my friends
How many bad snaps have you seen Mangold make in the shotgun? On that play Sanchez had a chance again to make all the mistakes look less important if he just made one big play to win the game for the Jets. If you'd been playing with him for a years worth of screw ups is that what you'd have been looking for as the desired result?
Well, that's a good point. But then, how do you explain how in the next game the O-line gave up 11 sacks against McElroy? Were they just that bad, or did they not want him to succeed...
Mel Kiper has us takin Dion Jordan at 9 in the draft. Anyone else opposed to taking a linebacker top ten?
I think probably McElroy's desire not to have a bunch of turnovers coupled with the Jet WR's inability to get open is what caused the 11 sacks. That and that the NFL game is a lot faster than the SEC game and the Jets offensive line was a lot less coherent against their competition than Alabama's was against theirs when McElroy last played the game in 2010.
I want to call bullshit on the mangold conspiracy theory. but every now and then something like that comes out that so and so lineman let their qb get sacked on purpose. Makes you wonder if it happens more than we'd like to think. A friend sent that to me last week. Weird... I can't imagine a world where I don't hate belicheat... that article is like OJ's what if book. Just wrong.
We lost plenty of those games due to Sanchez's poor play. The above is extremely deceiving. Aside from 2010, I wouldnt say that there were more than only a handful of games that Sanchez propelled us to victory. I was never a fan of Joe Flacco, but just look at this postseason- the offense ran through him. Not Ray Rice this time... Flacco who is widely considered an average QB, carried his offense to a SB title. Has Sanchez ever done that? Lets not make it seem that we didnt have a top 3 defense and a top 5 run game/OL in those back to back AFCCG's that carried Sanchez there for the most part.
Some of that was McElroy holding the ball too long. Some was the continuing disaster, worse each game, that was Sparano's playcalling. But yeah, some of that was definitely on the OL. Why that game? I don't think anyone here knows the real reason. But they were awful that game.
I don't buy that Mangold did it on purpose but I could see him not really giving a shit and not being focused due to frustration with Sanchez's play
I think that if the Jets swapped places with the Pats, we'd be fans of that cheating asshat. Regarding the 2013 season, if the stars align on offense (e.g., guard spots are shored up, receivers stay healthy, the WCO fits will with the QB) and the defense is constant despite the turnover, then our team will be good. Personally, I've got a good feeling about this season despite the schedule and will look into getting season tickets.
Going back to the original question: No. The Jets will not be good. They will not win more than 8 games this year. Unless there is a huge, unforeseen upgrade at QB. You cannot win in this league without a QB. That is a fact. Do not give me Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer. Those teams won with dominating defenses and they are the anomalies to history. Since 1993: Aikman Young Favre Elway Warner Brady Roethlisberger P. Manning E. Manning Brees Rodgers Flacco An NFL team will not win the SB without a great QB. The modern day rules will just not allow it. Sure, a team may make the playoffs with an average or slightly below average QB (Ponder). But you would need a shit ton of things to break right during the regular season and have some dynamic players at a lot of other important positions. The Jets do not.
This premise of needing a great QB is correct, but needs some adjusting. Big Ben, Eli, and Brady all had GREAT defenses and GREAT defensive performances in their first SB. They each had their moments, but the defense deserved the majority of the credit for each one of their 1st SBs. THey were not considered great at the time of those SBs. They did turn into great QBs so looking back, yes only great QBs win it, but at the time the ones I listed above were not considered great. And to be good, I guess the definition of good would be 8-8 and better if the 8-8 isn't a 8-5 collapse or something. You can do that without a great QB, you need a QB who won't turn it over. If we have solid ST and offense, meaning no easy chances for the opposing team, the defense is going to be good neough to keep us in games not against Brady/Manning. I think we have outside shot at being good, but it will require some major bounces to go our way. It's not going to be a good season becasue we are a "good" team, it would have to be an average team that gets breaks. That's the way I see it.
only Jet fans root for a losing season, what ever happend to optimism, i have us going 10-6 or better and taking the 5 seed or better. But i think 10-6 or 11-5 is the best we can do
