I don't think it's about throwing so much as Pennington being gunshy about the hits after the throw. The thumb injury started it all, two shoulders and a big contract hit later he'll be tentative, quick to throw and reluctant to run but won't take a real hit till pre-season. Sure everybody gets a new playbook but Ramsey's will be green and white instead of red and gold and he has to play like a 1st rounder. Put up or sit down. How many starts at Oregon makes you ready to start in the AFC East? 15? 16? Clemens will have to be Namath on a good day in TC to see a start in 2006. Mangini knew what he had in NY and knows what he needs to win. A decent O-line, 1000 yds. from CM or somebody, a real good defense, Nugent down the middle and a QB that can run and throw and stays healthy. Easier said than done. Did VT retire yet?
2004 stats before getting hurt: 144-216 67% 1643 Yards 9 TD's 3 Interceptions 97 QB Rating Don't know how you can say that he wasn't the Pennington of old. And I have no clue how you can question his passion. He's already made a ton of money, if he didn't have the same passion, I doubt he'd be working so hard to try and get back twice. I believe he has said that he has been throwing for awhile already
I think some guys "get it" after they've had enough bullshit in their lives. (Camera pans to Ramsey) This is his last ditch effort to get a starting job. I would say he is a little desperate and with all this competition around him he might just get his game up to beat Penny (who is injured) out of the job and beat out Clemens who is also coming off an injury . Brooksy is competion to a certain extent but has never won a starting position. Ramsey knows what to show the coaches to get the start. He is in a unique situation. The other issue is Mangini. Last year I said that Penny should ride the pine for a few weeks and let Fiedler take the start just to be catious of Penny arm. Herm screwed that up royally. Mangini is in the same exact situation. I don't believe he makes the same mistake. That puts Ramsey in great situation. Whether Penny starts or not Ramsey will be ready to go if he's smart.
i'am not thrilled on 2 back-up qbs competing for the starting qb for the jets. it would be great to have chad back but if that is unlikely, i'd have to go with brooks.
A huge portion of those throws were very short, high completion percentage dumpoffs to Martin and Sowell. He rarely threw deep. Pennington hasn't really looked good since 02.
I loved Pennington, but we have to face facts. He was a flash in the pan and not nearly as good as we thought he was. Sometimes QBs have fluke years, Pennington just managed to have his fluke year all the way at the beginning.
People are forgetting Pennington had no arm LAST year. I listened to the game 2 win over Miami, and the westwood one announcers talked the whole games about Pennington's wounded ducks. That was BEFORE his injury LAST YEAR and a second operation. You think he is going to come back with a stronger arm????? He is only in the picture for one reason--Boobway gave him $22M guarenteed, and we need 2 years to swallow the cap hit. Brady wins 2 super bowls and then the pats give him $60m, Pennington doesn't even get us to one and Boobway gives him $64 M. Now that Boobway is gone we have a chance to compete.
If they were such easy throws, why doesn't every QB make them? Why doesn't the defense stop them? Why were the Jets winning? And I remember him making tough throws in 2004 pretty consistently. Had deep touchdown passes to johnathan carter in the first 2 games. Threw for over 300 yards against the Bills, along with leading a 4th quarter game winning scoring drive. When Chad is healthy he's a very good player. If people doubt that, than they just don't understand football, and what the QB is supposed to do. Will he ever be healthy again? I don't know, but if he returns to how he was before getting hurt in 2004, we have a very good QB for the next few years.
The thing about that though is his arm looked pretty good in pre-season. I suspect that Pennington may have aggravated it more BEFORE the season ending injury last year and that is why he was so weak armed. I do not know if he will make it back. Reading between the lines it seems pretty doubtful.
agreed... I think the offensive game plan will be conservative to begin with. I forsee the team stressing the run game and trying to stop the run. I feel Ramsey will not be put into situations where he has to carry the team. I think the coaches will play to his strengths.
What kind of a hit are we looking at when we cut him at the end of this coming season? Will it be a manageable #?
Well, some people think Brooks has quality to do just that. They actually want Brooksy to get that start. They like what they saw when he played. I personally think he can be competative like he usually is but I think Ramsey has the tools to win the job. Of course we won't know until it happens. Hide sight is 20/20. I think Ramsey doesn't get it if he's not serious or focused enough. There's a chance for anything to happen but my money is on Ramsey if Chad is down.
I hope our season is not so bad as to allow us to have a shot at Brady Quinn. I do not expect Chad's arm to be any better than it was last year before the injury, quite frankly that was not good. Ramsey will start next year. I just don't see how he cannot beat out any of the QBs on the roster.
