I don't see how he's going to cash in this late in free agency while coming off a serious back injury.. I think J-Co let his ego get in the way a little bit here and it's going to bite him in the ass. Shocking to say that because he's been such a selfless player here for so long..
I'm sure the Jets are glad to ha e the cap help next year, but it doesn't sound like they were the impetus behind this decision.
I know I answered the forum schmuck with this serious reply. Asking to get cut costs Cotchery virtually nothing. I am sure he got together with his agent and came up with this. He feels "disrespected", ok........ Getting cut he loses what? 990k max if his salary is 1,900,000. Barring a big injury or Plax bombing he wasn't going to get a lot of reps. So this is his last shot at big money. He will sign with a prolific passing team and get a decent contract next year. Like others have said the Chargers make a lot of sense. He does well he can certainly get one last decent contract. He was scheduled to make 3.9 mill in 11-12 both seasons if he remained with the Jets. If he is lucky he can get 2 times that in the year after, figuring signing bonus. It makes sense for him to orchestrate this drama. I don't blame him he probably felt mortal after that back surgery. I can't blame him for that, nobody should. He is taking care of himself, I respect that completely.
He claims he's healthy. I doubt he'd ask for his release if he didn't believe he was. He was due 3.8 million in new money over the next two years. If he goes to San Diego, a team without a clear #2 this season, he'll get at worst a one year deal. If he succeeds, he'll have an extension before the end of the season.
Something sure as hell does not add up about this and we may never know the full details. He does have the skills to start, whether its here or elsewhere. Its just an unfortunate reality to see such respected vets come and go. Not blaming Jets management, but this news definitely sucks
I still think his back is the issue. Cotch failed a physical today and that was the reason listed on his release papers. Today meaning Thursday. Some info is missing in this story.
Seriously? I saw that the failed physical was what was listed on the papers, but the team says he asked for his release and Cotch stated on the record that he had problems with the team dating back to last season. I have a hard time believing that his back was the primary issue here. It seems like wishful thinking so that we can still feel like a beloved Jet desperately wanted to be here.

I don't blame him either. It's absolutely his right to try to start and to seek out as much money as he can. However, I'm not going to sit here and say it's a shame that he won't lift the Lombardi if and when the Jets win it if he made money and a starting job the priorities. He has every right to do it, but that doesn't make it a travesty if he cost himself a chance at a championship.
Weird day indeed. Been a pretty up and down offseason so far. Today was a down day. We have some unknowns on our team this year that make me a little nervous. New look d-line. New right tackle (hopefully not a new RG) . New look (old age) receivers. A QB who is still only 24 years old. I realize there is always a lot of turnover in football, it's just a bit nerve-wracking when your previous roster was on the cusp of a championship. The teams that fall off are the teams that sit on their rosters when they are close. The teams that get better are the teams that are continually evaluating their talent and finding where they can improve. Tannenbaum is proving to be the latter, and while it may make me nervous, I still believe he is taking the right approach. I assumed it was about money too, and it definitely seemed more plausible that the Jets were the ones worried about the money, not Cotchery. Maybe more information will come out soon making me have to re-evaluate my view on this again, but if this is really how it went down I am pretty disappointed. It's not like I really blame Cotchery that much, but it's still disappointing.
Wow. If it is true that he couldn't pass the team physical and he's still not good from the herniated disc than that changes everything. It could be about money but if there is still a chance that the organization is actually having his back(no pun intended) than maybe I'll have to hold my thoughts on the issue that until more information is revealed.
Bingo. This can't be said enough. We're not just focused on this season. We're trying to remain competitive while providing a base that allows us to compete for the next 4 years at least. They've made decisions to shore up positions based on the available players this season, too, careful not to overspend on players for whom it would be detrimental to overspend. That's the key. The receiver situation is what it is because we took the best players available who wouldn't come back to bite us on the cap. No one was worth giving a long term deal to at the #2, so we took a stop gap knowing we could address it in the draft. It's really the same at OLB. We all talked about Manny Lawson as being a younger Bryan Thomas, but if we feel we can address that position next year, why sign a guy to multiple years when BT is on an expiring contract? It's all about building the base as best you can.
If it's true he left over monetary and playing time issues, I wonder how long it'll be before a certain someone starts calling him Jerri¢ho ¢ot¢herme.
I gotta say, this feels like the worst move for the Jets since trading for Brett Favre and kicking out Pennington. I'd rather have Cotchery installed as a starter and showing up happy every day than have Burress here on a one year contract trying to kickstart his career. This team would've been better off keeping its own guy and giving him an opportunity he's earned instead of taking a chance on a 34 year old fresh off a 2 stretch. It looks like Tannenbaum had every opportunity to know that Cotchery would want out if he brought Burress in and handed him a starting role, so I guess he really feels like the team is better off with an aging Burress, who, lets face it, was kind of a dick even before he shot himself. Burress is by far my least favorite Jet after this, and he hasn't even had his first practice yet. Honestly, the notion that Burress deserves to be handed a starting job ahead of Cotchery when he's just joined the team after two years out of the game has me kinda hating Tannenbaum right now. At least make Burress prove it in training camp. I think its the rush to bury him on the depth chart, not even giving any consideration to the idea that Cotchery might be the better player right now, that has Cotchery feeling disrespected, and rightly so. After this, if the Jets let Shaun Ellis leave, they're crazy, especially if he goes to the Patriots. Winning is obviously the top priority, but the fans really don't like to see players treated like this. I'd be shocked if they don't increase their offer to him tomorrow. I'd like to say I wouldn't be shocked to see them make Cotchery an offer in a day or two, but that feels like wishful thinking. Karma being what it is, my guess is Cotchery goes to Buffalo and he and Brad Smith take turns playing spoiler to the Jets and all their superior talent. And as for the Jets calling it a failed physical, it's either damage control to deflect criticism from angry fans, or a spiteful attempt to limit the market for Cotchery's services. Anybody watching this story knows Cotchery isn't injured, Ryan said today he expected Cotchery to be on the field practicing in a day or two.
Yea it does seem that Rex is caught in the middle of a lot of front office moves this year. We'll never know how he really feels until after he leaves the team...
