This is what keeping him would have gotten us: https://jetsxfactor.com/2023/08/17/ny-jets-corey-davis-allen-lazard-wr2/ This was written last year before we know Lazard sucks. All JD had to do is tell Davis to suit up. Now we still need 3 receivers, #2, 3, and 4.
Did we have to pay him the 10 million he woulda got last year, this year? That could’ve one reason as to why we cut him. and maybe I’m wrong, but lev bell is the last (and only guy) I know who sat out a season. Albeit at a diff position, but does anyone else weigh how he did after he came back after sitting out and see it as mildly fungible with what could happen with davis this year?
I believe we would have to pay 10, though I am not 100% sure, But even so, we don't have to guarantee this money now. We have his rights and the roster bonus is not due in a while. It just seems like a dumb move - like letting Huff go, though not to that extent. But Davis at 10 mil seems like a good addition to me. JD is looking for complete bargain basement it looks like.
Would it be the worst idea if we kept da is and Lazard? Are we sure Lazard wouldn’t look better in a contract year, with Rodgers and as the 3 or 4 wr?
You could definitely be right. Those were just the first two things that came to mind before I had to leave for a rehearsal.
I doubt anyone wants to trade for an expensive WR fresh off the couch in his living room. Especially when he wasn’t all that good anyway
if one is to reasonably speculate one of the most plausible explanations how this release might make any sense which i don't know if it did I think it's a safe bet I don't have a dog in this fight but that's a lot of words to say there's no evidence for that /just sayin
Yeah, he's expensive. On the other hand, he could be a great 3rd receiver or 2nd receiver on some teams. So someone will pick him up.
I think the issue here is that Davis was pissed when the Jets signed Lazard last season. Conor Hughes SNY noted this: Corey Davis is far & away a better player than Allen Lazard, despite similar play styles. More of a leader, too. Lazard signing took reps from Davis. Became clear in camp Davis deserved them all. If [the] Jets can find a team willing to take Lazard they should move forward with that & bring back Davis,” Hughes said. Now all of a sudden the Jets are trying to move Lazard. I would bet if the Jets trade or cut Lazard, Davis will return.
That’s quite a cry baby move though. Good riddance if he fucking retired over playing time in training camp.
While I agree, we have a trend of unhappy WRs. Mims, then Moore, then Davis retires, then Hardman. Its probably like the Zach discussion. Some of its on them and some of it is on the Jets culture.
Yes he does but if they cut him they still have to pay him. If some team makes a trade the Jets will probably kick money in but they won't be on the hook for all of it.
Yeah, I just can't find any good vibes in any of the positive spins on this over the last day. Un-retiring to explore your options elsewhere, after leaving this team standing at the alter last spring, is lame ass crap. There is just no way around that for me. If that is who the guy is on a principle level F Corey Davis.
I agree that if the reason he retired was because he got pissed that the Jets signed Lazard, then to hell with him. I don't think that's it, however. He seems more professional and mature than that. He seemed like a really good guy, but the timing did suck when he retired, and it hurt the Jets last season big time. Hopefully, they can find a way to dump Lazard, and maybe bring Davis back. I can't really blame him for not wanting to play for Hackett (if that's the reason). After all, the Jets did release him and they didn't have to. We don't know why they did, but it's very plausible that JD decided he didn't want to pay Davis that much and wanted to go cheaper.
I never warmed up to CD and when he retired out of the blue, that solidified my indifference for the guy.
The NY Jets is where offense related players come/go to die. This team hasn't done shit, on that side of the ball, in nearly a decade. Period. Loyalty, paid to pay...blah blah blah... These guys go across the middle and get killed. I can't fault Davis. He was in that locker room, I'm sure he knew the shit show coming. Having said that, I'm more inclined to agree with Ouchy that the kid saw what receivers are pulling down right now and thought he'd get back into the action and score some cash. Food for thought: If you were a Jets WR, retire and then decided after a year on the couch that you weren't done and decided to come back would you sign on to join that shit show after you watched the nightmare that unfolded? Not me baby, I'd be requesting a release...at least ask. Playing for the Jets, on offense, is like lighting a match to future earnings.
