Davis made it official on Instagram Wednesday:

“For some time now I’ve been contemplating stepping away from the sport of football,” Davis wrote. “This decision has not been easy. Although I am a deep person, I am a man of few words. I’ve been searching my heart for what to do and I feel that stepping away from the game is the best path for me at this time. I have more blessings than I could have ever imagined — I have an amazing family, a beautiful wife, and two healthy children that I look forward to spending more time with. I am truly grateful for all the opportunities I have had and will continue to have on my journey. Thank you to my family and friends and the Jets organization for supporting me through this process.”

Great news he was worthless. Now we can keep Brownlee. Who is more athletic and his catch radius is much better than Davis.

Bye-bye. Saw enough of you never getting any separation. He was probably going to get cut. Way too expensive to carry around.

I remember him …. I believe he was part of a RB committee in 2006 - I don’t think he was considered the #1 back. There were 4 RBs who rotated. I know Leon Washington was one, I think Barlow was another… I do vaguely remember the TC incident.

I will say sometimes walking away when you can still walk away without permanent injuries - particularly head trauma is a smart move. It really is a role of the dice …

not at all true. corey was 2a/2b with lazard. if he was concered about that he'd ask for a trade or release. he wouldn't retire.

This was absolutely family related. Probably told to spend more time with us or spend more time alone after the divorce. The only other thing I can think of is his getting tested for CTE and was told its coming if he doesn't retire. Either one takes priority over football.

I read all the comments and none of us know why Davis retired. Good for him that he got out without a serious injjury and hopefully his family and him ok. As for the Jets WR room outside of Wilson our #2 on paper is Lazard which is not saying much. I guess we are going to have relly on tight ends. I prefer speedy WRs who can catch and there does not seem to be any out there (maybe after the 24 cut) right now.

Walking away from that much money and a HOF QB...

Seems like something has to be going on.

Yeah, he was in rotation but definitely was handed a huge chance and a much higher burden. After Blaylock went down he went to #2, after Martin got hurt, #1 is what I recall, but I could be 100% wrong. Now that I think about it, he bowed out before TC the following season. The Jets kept him on the roster for a full year trying to convince him to return. He declined. I just found this. He seems like such a good dude.

As to walking away, if you planned for life after football with a viable degree and manage the money you did make in your purposely short NFL career responsibly and smart. . . Well, therein lies the catch. Heh.

Edit: I typed therein twice, what the frig. o_O

Just look at some of our guys - favorite players of mine from the 80s….Al Toon isn’t the same with all of his concussions. Wesley Walker admitted he sometimes takes the wrong street home in his own neighborhood…Gastineau. Heck even non head injuries watching Klecko being introduced before the HOF game and seeing that slow, gimpy walk about 20 yards…..geez. So sad….
