Projecting Beckham as a star at the next level is a considerable leap of faith in my opinion. He could have an immediate impact as a kick returner. I would not spend the #18 overall pick to go down that road. At #18, if you want to shy away from Cooks or Lee for whatever reason, give me Dennard or Gilbert.
Beckham had fewer receptions but more receiving yards in their sophomore season. He had fewer receptions but a better YPC in their junior season. You're saying that because Beckham was part of the most talented WR tandem in college football and the LSU staff designated 1 guy a possession receiver and 1 guy a big play receiver, he therefore cannot be a true #1 receiver. Basically, as a freshman, Beckham was the better recruit and thus got the playing time. As a sophomore, Beckham led the team in receiving yards but they used Landry as an outlet for Mettenberger on lots of 10 yards-or-fewer passes. As juniors, Beckham was the clear #1 and demanded the most attention of defenses, so the LSU staff productively utilized the mismatch they had with their talented #2 receiver. Beckham was not outperformed by Landry in a single year they were together. He may have compiled more receptions, but the designation #1 receiver is not limited solely to the team receptions leader. A perfect example is the 2007 Patriots. Randy Moss-93 catches, 1,493 yards (15.2 ypc) Wes Welker-112 catches, 1175 yards (10.5 ypc) One is obviously the #1 receiver, and one is obviously the possession receiver.
This doesn't change the fact that Beckham has never showed up in a big game. Moss and Welker played very well off each other, and they both still produced - so I don't think this is a very good analogy.
Have you watched all his games? Maybe you have I don't know I would just like some proof that he hasn't.
Anyone remember the receiver to enter the draft within the last few years that had 1900 yards, 140 catches and 17 TDs?
After watching the Tex AM vs LSU game, which I guess is a big game, Beckham: blocked everybody, caught a low pass, dropped a bomb, was ignored by QB, saw 2 other receivers make catches, had a good punt return.....he is obviously following the game plan. Perhaps he was underused, but don't think he is elite WR. No Victor Cruz here, sorry.
To me..production is absolutely crucial..but I define it differently than just numbers. It's about consistently winning the given player's individual's battle based on tape. That's production in its rawest form as it fits with football. You can't properly quantify football based on numbers...especially ones tied to the score board. It's just as much about the DL getting movement in the QB's face as it is the CB who intercepts one for a TD on the very same play. Or the WR occupying a deep safety that opens the seam for the big TE catch. There are just too many variables. That's why you rely on tape. You want alot of guys who win their individual battles which will result in greater good.
Last time I watched a game I did not see anybody doing pushups or bench pressing weight between the lines. Also no one in gym togs running fly patterns.
Yes. Well said Kurt. Numbers a piece to the puzzle, but there are just too many factors to base the majority of an opinion on a WR off of numbers.
I watched the game last name. From my memory- Beckham beat his man off the line, slightly underthrown ball and CB grabbed his left hand stopping him from catching the pass on a deep sideline pass. Long post in the endzone where Beckham had a step on his defender, pass was there, safety made a great play and got a hand into deflect pass. Two slants in the redzone- one low where Beckham had to go to the ground for, another behind him which stopped him momentum. If both had correct ball placement, they might have been converted into a TD (I know the one where it was behind him, he had plenty of room for a TD). On more than one occasion Beckham beat his guy, but Mett opted for a different receiver. The PA pass to the TE specifically sticks out in my mind. Last play on video Beckham had guy beat in endzone, potential drop or a great PBU by the defender, video cut out early so I couldnt tell. He did what he was asked, and he was a great play by a defender or a correctly placed ball from a TD or two. What part of his skill set says he cant be a Victor Cruz type player? Bucky Brooks sees the comparison: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0ap2...est-nfl-fits-include-jets-eagles-and-panthers
Victor Cruz type player would be a UDFA who plays full throttle and makes the cut and then becomes a major player. Antonio Brown type player would be a 6th round pick who plays lights out and manages to grab a starting NFL spot as a result. Odell Beckham type player, assuming he worked out, would be like a 3rd round pick who finally played up to his potential and became a star. Odell Beckham as a 1st round pick is like "OMG, puke, puke, puke, the Jets just bought another combinebunnyrabbit at full value and now we're going to have to deal with the fallout."
Bucky Brooks 2014 mock drafts have been pretty consistent since the beginning with only a few changes. He has Lee to the Jets in all 6 of his mocks and OBJ to the Chiefs in his first 5 and then jumps OBJ 8 spots to the Steelers at 15. That may be attributable to over evaluation from an extra 2 week wait for the draft. It may be subconscious peer pressure since other talking heads are pushing OBJ up their boards. Or maybe he actually saw something on tape within the last 2 weeks that made him think OBJ should jump 8 spots. Regardless, I just hope he's right about the 18th pick. 1.0 (Jan 14, 2015) 18. Marquise Lee 23. OBJ 28. Brandin Cooks 2.0 (Feb 21, 2014) 18. Lee 22. Cooks 23. OBJ 3.0 (Mar 4, 2014) 18. Lee 23. OBJ 30. Cooks COMBINE 4.0 (Mar 25, 2014) 18. Lee 23. OBJ 30. Cooks 5.0 (April 15, 2014) 18. Lee 23. OBJ 27. Cooks 6.0 (May 1, 2014) 15. OBJ 18. Lee 23. Cooks
Holy shit Bradway, this is the dumbest post yet. I mean, do you understand what a player comparison is? You dont compare HOW they get to the NFL, you compare what type of player you project them to be- compare similar traits in a player that define their game. With this logic, Damon Harrison is Victor Cruz and Antonio Brown is Tom Brady. Damn, if this is what Im arguing with, I just cant...
It isn't something he saw in the last two weeks, it's the pressure not to be wrong about somebody that everybody is touting. All it takes is one guy with influence to raise somebody and the movement begins. Everybody had Dewayne Robertson in the top 10 by the time the 2003 evaluation process was over. He'd gone from middle of the 2nd round to top 10 in about 2 months and it all started at the combine. I'll almost guarantee you that OBJ is going to be a decent but not great NFL WR. He's clearly got the physical tools to do that job and the only thing that is going to keep him from being a good #2 or #3 is the injury factor. If he's drafted by a team that expects him to be a #1 down the road then he'll be a disappointment overall but probably not a bust. If he'd shown the ability to take his tools and be a star at LSU I'd be much higher on him. All he'd have to have done was catch 75 balls or so in once of the last two seasons and I'd have a different read on his ceiling. The problem is that for most athletes they've done the majority of their growing by the time they're 21. They've showed you what their capabilities are and they spend the rest of their career refining and recapturing their top level performance. A few guys actually break out after that and really raise their level of performance but that's not because their tools got better, it's because they grew mentally and adapted to a bigger and better reality. The odds on that happening are almost random, unless you have an amazing teacher and motivator and mentor that they are suddenly exposed to who brings out the best in them.
No it really isn't. You're pushing a guy who was never a star at the collegiate level because you think that somehow the Jets are going to get more out of him than anybody else has. How retarded is that? You do a lot of wishing on fairy dust? The guy had 3 receiving TD's in 26 career games against SEC opponents. How can you want him on the Jets? How can that pitiful level of productivity in the best college conference in the world make you want this guy? Stop watching the tape. Or at least start figuring out why the SEC had Beckham's number.
Maybe he can be a Cruz, but he will face a lot harder defenders than Texas AM. Coulda, shoulda, maybe doesn't really cut it for a value assessment. In other words, I would not sell the farm for OBJ. Would you? Not based on this game
Beckham has yet to show he can perform on the big stage. I watched a few LSU games this season, and I just didn't come away impressed. The physical attributes are there, the kid has potential but I can't stop thinking about the big games LSU had where I barely heard his name.
Brace yourself fellas, I have a strong feeling that the Eagles will jump us by trading for the Ravens' 17th overall pick and steal a receiver, whether it be Cooks or OBJ. Getting jumped over for a WR we want for a second consecutive year would be agonizing for fans, so I figured I'd prepare you guys for the possibility. Hopefully Dennard is still available.
Either Cooks or Beckham would be good but Benjamin would be better than either. I just dont think they will take him that high... Even though i would LOVE IT if they did because he will be the best WR in this draft class next to Sammy and Evans!
