Go back to the 1998 team that had great QB play and a weak 3.8 YPC rushing attack we were still 5th in the league in rushing attempts and 14th in passing attempts even though we were pretty even pass and run distribution. the difference was we threw the ball down the field for big chunks of yardage. This year we are combining a short passing game with the run game and we have pulled the D in to defense both effectively. We need more rush attempts and more passes down the field. The reason for balance is TOP and field position coupled with keeping the D honest. If you don't have an accurate passing attack you're much better off being less accurate down the field. INT's become punts not game changing killers. Pass interference is much more likely to come into play meaning your completion percentage may go down but if you combine the possability of penalty your efficiency is maintained. We have a passing game that hurts the run game and a run game that sets up a down field passing attack. We rarely use it. We empty out the backfield way to much on short yardage situations. We don't run draw plays we don't go over the top enough out of a running set. We are running a WC passing O combined with a 1970's style running attacik.
Our YPC wasn't great in 1998(Curtis had the thigh problem) BUT D's respected Curtis and that helped immensely in the passing game.
I don't understand why people are making such a huge deal about this. First of all, it happened in the offseason. This was an offseason that came after they had made it to the AFC championship game for the 2nd straight year, and after which they beat the Pats in NE in the divisional round and lost in the championship game in Pittsburgh because of a flat defensive effort in the first half. I don't see the huge issue in giving your coordinators an extra year of security after that. Second of all, if they don't make the playoffs because of continued offensive struggles, they will just fire him. Its not like coaches haven't been fired before with a year left on their deal. Happens all the time folks. This is just another disgusting example of Jets fans reacting harshly to news reported by the NY media as if its groundbreaking...IT ISN'T!! They're reporting on a ONE YEAR extension that was done last summer. Get over it. This is the kind of fan reaction that causes our young franchise QB (who has won us 4 playoff games already BTW) to be friggin BOOED in a home game during the introductions! Disgusting. I am more dissapointed in the fanbase this year so far than I am in the team!
Apparently he has 2 years after this year which they probably wouldn't fire him which is good for us.
You're forgetting the 5-year year extension he'll get next year after calling 6 straight 5 yard slants on 3rd & long in a game. This is Isiah Thomas all over again
I basically agree with your assessment here, but the real question is why is this the case? Why are they taking this approach? While there is merit to your statement that an INT deep downfield is more like a punt than a game changing pick six on a short out pass attempt, I think the CS thinks Sanchez cannot complete long passes with any consistency. Tht's why they don't throw it.
Am I wrong in thinking that Schotty's and Sanchez's rookie contract both expire at the same time? If so, I see the thinking here. If Sanchez and the offense doesn't start being more consistent and productive by the end of that time frame, a change will happen either at the CS level or the Player level.
Anybody ever think that Sanchez needs continuity and LIKES working with Brian ? I mean, we comment based on what we read...he spends 6, 8, 10 hours a day with the guy. And we know what's best for him ??????????????????????
Another 2 and a half years of Schotty will do no one good. this is fucking terrible news. What's next? "The Jets sign Schotty to the 1st ever immortal contract after creating the leagues 22nd best offense!"
If I see another designed four yard run on third and long I'm going to hang myself with my cellphone charger haha. I love Rex but he needs to accept the fact that the Jets are hurting and be honest with the fans. He has almost delusional remarks about Schotty and Sanchez and the production of the offense/defense. It's time to stop covering for these guys and start shitcanning them and I believe they should start with Schotty.
