Some quarterbacks have to deal with the expectations of the media, draft position and the fanbase. Some crash and burn.

Namath had unbelievable pressure put upon him and handled it with ease.

It appears Sam, early on at least, is cut from the same cloth.

This is more what I was talking about - there's more to being a FQB than just stats.

Eli Manning, fukk him and his fukk off Giants (except for the SB wins over the Cheats that I explained in detail many times). Unfortunately, Little Jimmy wound up busting his tibia in half later on in his career. Oh, well. My 'locations' elsewhere were "Santonio Holmes' Center For Behavioral Science" and "Jim Leonhard's Broken Leg". Honorable mention location: "Kris Jenkins' ACL".

I like all of you guys, and thanks for posting in my thread. As a point of order, however, I have to make clear as someone who is a very knowledgeable fan of this great sport. I obviously realize that the game has changed drastically over the course of the past 30-40 years. That is why when commenting on Namath's stats, I intentionally and obviously cited the examples of two of his contemporaries...Johnny Unitas and Sonny Jorgensen. I assumed that this would make it obvious that I was taking into account how the game has radically changed by comparing Namath and his statistical performance to his contemporaries. In short, I was surprised that his completion % was barely at 50% and that his TD to INTO ratio was well...quite frankly BAD by any measure.

Having said all of that, I understand that stats obviously do NOT tell the ENTIRE STORY. I agree with that...but they DO matter. I think we would all agree that average yards per pass attempt, completion % and TD to INT ratio are all pretty good indicators of how well a QB is playing. In real terms, I don't think anyone here would be happy if the Jets had a QB who threw 4-5 INTS for every TD he threw, or who was averaging 4 yard per pass attempt.

However, I do realize Namath's obvious talent, legendary quick release, and the obvious historical impact he had on the NFL. There is no denying that he is living NFL Legend. I also respect how much he means to many old-school Jets fans on this board. I was not saying that he should be booted out of the HOF, lol. I was commenting on his comp % and TD to INT ratio (once again in comparison to his contemporaries) and commenting that I can understand why SOME NFL writers have said that they did not think he ranked with the likes of Unitas, et. al.

There's little doubt that opinions on Namath are either clouded by his stats or seen through rose coloured glasses for what he did for the Jets and the AFL.

Add in the fact that he was the coolest motherfucker to play the game and you have the legend that is Joe Willy.

I guess you had to be there.
