Does anyone know if I can take memory from an IBM laptop and put it in a Dell laptop? Like is all memory the same, or is it company specific?

Not company specific, its Motherboard specific. If you can get the specs for each I can let ya know.

And how would I find that out? I don't really know that much about the technical side of computers, but I can follow directions like nobody's business!

Once again.....I have to say THANK YOU a TON!!!! You have saved me a FORTUNE!!!!

I just bought a new laptop, and I had your first post right next to me....following all of the steps to the T!!!!!

This is the MOST awesome thread that you have started to help the computer challenged folks like me!!! Because of you, I did not have to go to the store and buy all of that junk that I put on my last computer....everything was FREE!!!

Plus....I had to laugh, I was looking over my notes, from my last computer. When I bought it, I signed up for all of that garbage that they try to sell you, when you first open up your computer......not having a CLUE what was good, what was terrible, what was not compatible with other stuff....it is a miracle I did not have 10 anti-virus programs on all at once, making a big mess!!!!

Thanks SO MUCH again....besides the fact that my laptop zips along in no time flat, you have saved me some MAJOR $$$$$$!!!!

Ok, being serious now. When I'm having problems, this is THE first place I go for help. Green Dude speaks my language, "computer stoopid"

That's awesome that I could help that much. Really, when you buy a PC or a Laptop at a store like Best Buy, the only commission the sales person gets is from things like added on virus protection, spy ware crap, extended warranties and other software you can get for free online. So you always feel pressured to buy it, when in reality they only want their commission! In the end they only clutter your computer only making matters worse for you. Glad I saved you some money, now go buy a Kerry Rhodes jersey now will ya!

    GD,

Finally got a TV set (console - nuthin' but coax). I do, however, have an adapter that converts RCA or S-video to coax. What is the cheapest video card that'll let me watch streaming games on the TV while still being able to use my computer?

This is what's available under $20 on ebay:

-MATROX G450 AGP VGA DUAL MONITOR 256-bit VIDEO CARD
-ATI Radeon 7000 32MB AGP Dual Monitor Video Card
-NVIDIA QUADRO FX 330 64MB DUAL MONITOR PCI-E VIDEO CARD

This one's $25 or $30, but is it worth it?
-ATI Radeon 9000 64MB AGP Video Card Dual Monitor VGA

First which slot do you have? PCI, AGP or PCI-Express?

I'd go with something like this:

This is my Mobo: Jetway PM800BMS Motherboard
This is what is listed, although I only see the PCI slots available to the back of the tower: Expansion Slots AGP x8 x 1 ? PCI x 3

    See:

Come to think of it, where the hell are the AGP slots? I'm gonna say PCI as I know I have PCI-1 and PCI-3 open.

Know any cards with a TV tuner built in in the same price range?

    Thanks dude, you're the greenest:up:

    hi.

ok, so my second computer is acting up. We are getting BSOD nonstop, some with BAD_POOL_HEADER, some with no message at all. We followed the suggestions of a few websites, and replaced the RAM. System started right up, thought we were gold. Then it happened again. We swapped hard drives to a lightly used backup drive(Maxtor 120gb). While trying to format and install WinXP on it, I would get the BSOD with no message. I finally managed to get WinXP installed, and during the update process, boom, BAD_POOL_HEADER BSOD. I removed the video card, and am running off on board video. THe power supply is relativly new, a year or so old, but there is a wire(connected to the mobo) that that nylon casing is a bit frayed, but the actual wires themselves are undamaged.

I wanna see if there is anything I can do to save from having to goto a computer repair shop and wasting my money.

Any ideas what is going on? Need more info? Thanks =(

Hey IATA try this out and let me know how it goes for you.

Which type of network card do you have?

First start your machine in safemode by restarting the computer and pressing F8 as the PC begins to boot. Select "Safe Mode with networking"

    Once in safe mode click
    Start
Run then type in services.msc and press ENTER

Look for Indexing Services and disable it... this issue is usually due to the network card you are using or a bad driver. See if that does anything and get back to me.
